My late father tutored my son 2x per week in math all the way from California—and always had on a Tuskegee shirt when he did. Ha. His grandson is now a freshman at TU—and is strong in math to this day. NEVER underestimate the power of your influence—or intention. Yeah.🥹🙏🏽🌱

14/ That was the 1st time I’d been pulled over with 1 of my sons. Seeing my boy instinctively put his hands up and stare straight ahead made my heart both swell and break at the same time. Know this: What threatens daily wellbeing is NOT the same for everyone, ok? Thanks.

1/ Last Sunday afternoon, I was riding in the car with my 12-year-old son. Just us 2, riding to our (super casual) church. And talking about his first week of school. Best part: Seeing his friends. Worst part: Having to wake up early again. All of it was super normal. Yup.

1/ Yesterday in CVS pharmacy: Her: "I like your purse." Me: "Thank you. I love the color of your hijab. It's so beautiful." Her: *smiles with eyes* "Thank you." Me: "Ramadan Mubarak. I hope that's okay for me to say." Her: "It is. Thanks!" *silence* Her: "Umm. . "

1/ On rounds at Grady Me: "How're you feeling today?" Him: "Well. I been better. That medicine y'all gave me made me run off!" My team looked puzzled. I did not. Me: "Oh no! You talking 'bout the medicine we gave you for your gout flare up?" Him: "Yeah! That one!"

2/ Her: "And I just want to say I hate how much grief you have to feel right now. I'm sorry." Me: *quiet* Her: "I hope that's okay for me to say." Me: "It is. Thanks." We stood there for a few moments. Then just sort of parted ways. Then I got in my car and cried. #iseeyou

1/ “Can I run something by you?” It was Saturday. I was already gone. She was still on the ward. I didn’t respond to that text. Instead, I called her directly. Me: “Hey.” Her: “I’m so sorry to bother you, Dr. Manning.” Me: “Never be sorry.” *silence* Me: “I’m all ears."

1/ Today I held a hand that needed to be held. You were so afraid. So, so afraid. You: "I don't want to die from this." Me: "I don't want you to, either." You: "No, I mean this shot." I opened my mouth and then closed it. Before I could speak, you had the phone to your ear.

14/ “I appreciate y’all being so concerned about me." His eyes brimmed with tears. We nodded--in unison. Sure did. The crazy part? All of this transpired in less than 1 hour. Her: “I’m really, really glad you came back, Dr. M.” Me: “Me, too.” And I was.👊🏾 #supportisaverb

I was unblinded today as a #COVIDVaccine trial enrollee. Found out I’d gotten placebo. Yup. Next, I was offered the vaccine. I chose to consent & received my first dose. Nothing withheld. Not this time. This I do in remembrance of you. We’re at the table now. #thisboutus

1/ I was walking into Grady one day after lunch and saw 3 young black men standing outside near the entrance. They were laughing and talking in animated voices. The easy, melodic African American vernacular they used was familiar. Some profanity was interspersed. I drew closer.
