Nolan Arenado had texted at least one #STLCards player more than once over the past year to tell him how much he’d like to play in St. Louis. The Cardinals have always been motivated to get guys who want to be here.
Marcell Ozuna is developing some civic pride. He’s wearing a Blues T-shirt and walking around the visitors’ clubhouse in Miami telling everybody “My city has a hockey team.”
In the visiting clubhouse at Busch Stadium, a laminated list of Adam Wainwright's favorite restaurants in St. Louis hangs on the wall. It's organized in categories like, "Date night," or "casual eats." Its purpose is simply to inform the opposing players so they enjoy STL.
Cards' Ryan Helsley, whose mother is full-blooded Cherokee, on the Braves' Tomahawk Chop: “It kind of devalues our Cherokee heritage and the Native-American history. Us as Cherokee native people went through a lot in this country."
Asked about his shortstop situation, with Paul DeJong and Edmundo Sosa both on the IL with Covid, #STLCards manager Mike Shildt mentioned that Ozzie Smith texted Willie McGee and said he's got some innings in him.
I realize I should be tweeting arbitration stuff, etc., but I've been informed my contract at The Athletic will not be renewed. Best of luck to that enterprise and now I am curious and excited to see where my skill set can land me. Thanks for reading and following.
Not to get sappy here, but the young core of pitchers this #STLCards group has in Jack Flaherty, Jordan Hicks, Dakota Hudson, Alex Reyes, Ryan Helsley, et al., seems not only brilliantly talented and prepared, but also fundamentally decent as human beings. Kudos to their parents.
Great scene outside the visiting clubhouse at Busch Stadium, with Albert Pujols ushering Paul Goldschmidt’s kids in to meet the greatest player in the game. “That’s Mike Trout, guys!” Albert said.
I heard an agent recently describe Rockies GM Jeff Bridich as the “worst communicator in MLB.” That seems to be a big aspect of this whole thing, amazingly.
