The last time abortion was illegal in the US, we didn't have devices tracking our every move, gathering our ambient data, law enforcement with sophisticated surveillance capabilities. So when people say "we've been through this before," the real answer is: "no, we haven't"

Two years ago I reported on how women in the Philippines, where abortion is illegal, access the abortion pill.

Scoop from me and @dellcam: Today @Foxglovelegal filed a lawsuit in Kenya against Meta for inflaming civil conflict and hate in Ethiopia. Why Kenya? That's where much of Meta's moderation teams that make decisions about Ethiopia are based.

Today in random TikTok news, @Grimezsz quoted a story I wrote for @restofworld about the rise of NFT Games (like @AxieInfinity) across the Global South. Never thought I’d be posting on TikTok, but I guess I had no choice?

Since the overturn of Roe v. Wade, a LOT of people have noticed that abortion-related content was being flagged or removed from FB and Instagram, particularly around the abortion pill. So I dug deeper and found this has been a historical problem.

Some news: I write for @wired now! I'll be covering platforms and power--I'm still getting started, but in the meantime, feel free to reach out or DM for Signal. Great to work with the brilliant @tsimonite on my first piece

Social media platforms have steadily tightened content controls over the years—Twitter is on the cusp of a unique experiment in doing the opposite. Company insiders & advisors say the results may be messy. wired.com/story/twitter-… Nice to team up w/ @telliotter on her @Wired debut

For nearly two years, a big part of my beat at @restofworld has been thinking about how big western tech companies like #Facebook work and feel to users in the Global South--the places that make up FB's astronomical growth but receive little investment

New from me: @accessnow @citizenlab @AmnestyTech and others have identified Pegasus on the phones of human rights workers, journalists, and at least one UN official during the time of the war between Armenia and Azerbaijan.

Fertility apps and other health tracking devices are also a liability and collect sensitive data that would be useful in criminalizing pregnant people.

Today is my 2 year anniversary with @restofworld. I am really proud of the work I've been able to do in what has remained a REALLY chaotic time. One of the coolest things about building something from scratch is getting cover new a wide range of topics from all over:

New from me and @stokel today: Many laid off Twitter employees were kept on the payroll for the past 2 months and expected severance packages to come through this week. But the people we spoke to said they've heard nothing from the company.

Really excited to see @MariamBarghouti's piece on @restofworld today, talking about how Palestinian's experiences of digital and physical repression mirror each other. restofworld.org/2021/palestine…
