Replying to @evilsocket and @vlindovskyI think this is a cultural trait necessary to work at big tech imo, especially Amazon. If you are not comfortable in exploiting your connection to get in, it will be hard to be promoted, win ideas etc
A startup is much more horizontal, no politics necessary.
