I will be hosting a version control system tutorial at 2026, with @op as co-host (edit: Turns out Omar cannot make it; Johannes Thyssen Tishman will be co-hosting instead).

This tutorial will be suitable for both experts and complete beginners. The experts will probably spend significant effort temporarily unlearning some things they know, while the beginners will spend moderate effort learning some things they didn't know. Our goal is that both groups will broaden their version control horizons a bit and have fun doing so :flan_hacker:

For my company I have put together and support packages which cover tasks I have been doing via ad-hoc consulting gigs for years now. And I asked some freelancing friends from the OpenBSD community to share the work with me.

We support deployments of OpenBSD in server and firewall roles via yearly fixed-price contracts. All base system components can be supported.

From our existing client base we know for a fact that there are small and mid-sized businesses out there who run OpenBSD and would benefit from working with us. We want to find more of them.

I will be hosting and firewall courses at @linuxhotel in the city of Essen, Germany.

OpenBSD: linuxhotel.de/course/openbsd-d

PF: linuxhotel.de/course/pf-de

Next date for the PF course will be: 18th of May 2027 - 20th of May 2027

The target audience are system administrators who would like to learn about OpenBSD and PF in order to use them as part of their network security tool set.

(Do not be afraid to sign up if you do not understand German. While the courses are advertised in German, written course material will be in English and the presentation will be entirely in English if preferred by participants.)

@gothub This is tremendous news!

Thank you everyone who is using and -- you clearly know why you're using it. :)

I never saw Patrick Stewart at a convention and didn't come with him into direct contact in any way when working on #StarTrekPicard but there's one Patrick Stewart/Jean-Luc Picard related achievement that only I have ever made - find proof that Patrick Stewart exists in the #StarTrek universe. 1/10

We have reached the 400€ mark of monthly recurring revenue from subscriptions for #Git hosting. Thanks everyone! :flan_flowers:

I love how easy `ssh signup@gothub.org` was. No javascript required (until stripe payment).

Some people who understand TLS very well (because they develop a TLS library), use this in their config file. Maybe everyone else should use this, too.

Patrick Stewart has died. I wanted to remember him for being the absolute badass that he was.

Time for a cup of earl grey, hot, in the captain's honor.

Fans across the world mourn the passing of a true and irreplaceable legend. As Captain Jean-Luc Picard, Patrick Stewart took the starship Enterprise to places it had never gone before, and he inspired a whole next generation of star-gazers who looked longingly ahead to a brighter future for all humanity. Our hearts are heavy, indeed. Rest in the heavens, Captain.

These five divisions define how far we can go in space

From:

two-way communicable to
one-way communicable to
observable now to
observable someday to
forever unobservable,

here are the dividing lines that define how we see our Universe.

I built a site that shows which known CVEs affect the FreeBSD Ports, and whether there is already a fix and a VuXML entry (the database behind pkg audit):

portstatus.bsdproject.de

Every hour it matches NVD and CNA data against the packages and VuXML, and shows whether a fix has reached the quarterly branch.

“Unaddressed” does not mean exploitable, just worth a second look.

Private project, not an official FreeBSD service.

I am getting excited about an upcoming generation of WiFi hackers which will add support for 11n and 11ac to the NetBSD kernel without wrapping Linux drivers in a compatibility layer. It's been kind of lonely in this territory over the past 10 years or so.

#gitAnnex security fix released!

Version 10.20261026 fixes a cross-repository data exfiltration attack (CVE-2026-112818)

I hope distributions will update promptly. In the meantime you should avoid running git-annex in any new git clones from anyone else.

That'll teach me to go to sleep early, wake up early and fail to look closely at my calendar.

I do work today.

Just, not at 8am!

My shift isn't until 16:00.

Hahahahahahaha, ah well. I guess I could have stayed up later? Or slept in more? I already spent > 70+ minutes on the commute into the "office" how shall I burn the next 8ish hours until my shift actually begins?

Well, for starters, I submitted a Pull Request to update MacPorts' Got (Game of Trees) to 0.130.1 -portable here:

https://github.com/macports/macports-ports/pull/36049

One of the GitHub Continuous Integration checks passed OK. The other one? Is queued.

Hopefully it will go smoothly?

Regardless, it's up to someone else with commit access to merge it.

I've just had to stumble across the database admin password in ~/.mysql_history in order to get the database of a application upgraded across a major version.

Leaves me wondering how many admins out there are having to touch legacy systems where such details have long been forgotten and cannot be found anywhere... :flan_yikes:

As an experiment, I've created OpenCollective: opencollective.com/debsuryorg to see if I can replace my Patreon with that.

Would you like to take a break from whatever you are rage-screaming about to rage-scream about a different topic?
