Source Code

The plugin build compiles assets/js/disable-comments.js from src/disable-comments.js with Babel and assets/css/style.css from assets/scss/style.scss with Sass, using Grunt. These sources are not included in the plugin zip. Other first-party JavaScript and CSS files in assets/ are maintained directly.

Both the sources and the build configuration live in the GitHub development repository. To build them yourself:

Bundled third-party assets

The Select2, pagination.js, and SweetAlert2 JavaScript/CSS distributions are bundled separately from the Grunt build. Their full license notices are in assets/licenses/. The DM Sans webfont notice and SIL Open Font License 1.1 are in assets/fonts/OFL.txt. The plugin license is in LICENSE.txt.

  • Select2 4.1.0-rc.0: source and build files, MIT license.
  • pagination.js, bundled header 2.1.5: upstream source, MIT license. The CSS matches upstream 2.1.5; the modified JavaScript is shipped in readable form at assets/js/pagination.min.js and is not rebuilt by Grunt.
  • SweetAlert2 10.10.1: source and build files, MIT license.
  • DM Sans latin webfonts, distribution v11: upstream source, SIL Open Font License 1.1.

External services

Disable Comments connects to one external service, and only if you opt in.

WPInsight usage analytics (opt-in, off by default)

WPInsight is WPDeveloper’s usage-analytics service. We use it to learn which WordPress versions, PHP versions, plugins and themes people run alongside Disable Comments, so we can keep the plugin compatible with them.

  • When data is sent: only after an administrator clicks „Sure, I’d like to help” in the opt-in notice. It is sent once at that moment, then about once a day by WP-Cron (only the details that changed since the last report), and once more when the plugin is deactivated. If you click „No Thanks.” or ignore the notice, nothing is ever sent.
  • What is sent: your site URL and site name, WordPress version, site language and charset, PHP version, server software, whether the site is a multisite, text direction, the server path of the plugin, the lists of active and inactive plugins, the active theme and its version, the Disable Comments version, and the account email address of the administrator who clicks the opt-in button (used to send the discount coupon). A daily report can also include the current logged-in user account email; a background report without a logged-in user omits email. Reports also include the plugin name and identifier, tracker version, activation status and marketing flag, service-assigned site identifier, and original site URL when available. On deactivation it sends the same details again, plus the account email address of the administrator who deactivates the plugin, the deactivation time, and the reason and any note they enter in the deactivation form. Like any web request, the connection also reveals your server’s IP address to the service.

The „Still Seeing a Comment Form?” check on the plugin’s settings page also requests pages of your own site to check what your theme outputs. Those requests go to your own site only and send nothing to a third party.

Telepítés

Modern megoldás:

  1. Lépjen a WordPress irányítópult „Új bővítmény hozzáadása” részéhez.
  2. Keresse meg a „Hozzászólások letiltása” elemet.
  3. Telepítse, majd aktiválja.
  4. A bővítmény beállításai az adminisztrációs felület „Beállítások” menüjén keresztül érhetők el (egyoldalas telepítés esetén a webhely adminisztrációs felületén, hálózati telepítés esetén pedig a hálózat adminisztrációs felületén).

Régi megoldás:

  1. Töltse fel a bővítmény mappáját a /wp-content/plugins/ könyvtárba

GYIK

If you still see the message, then it means your theme is overriding this behaviour, and you will have to edit its files manually to remove it. Two common approaches are to either delete or comment out the relevant lines in wp-content/your-theme/comments.php, or to add a declaration to wp-content/your-theme/style.css that hides the message from your visitors. In either case, make sure you know what you are doing!

Go to the edit page for the post you want to disable comments on. Scroll down to the „Discussion” box, where you will find the comment options for that post. If you don’t see a „Discussion” box, then click on „Screen Options” at the top of your screen, and make sure the „Discussion” checkbox is checked.

You can also bulk-edit the comment status of multiple posts from the posts screen.

Go to the tools page for the Disable Comments plugin and use the Delete Comments tool to delete all comments or according to the specified post types from your database.

This cannot be undone. Back up your database before running it.

How do I disable comments across an entire multisite network?

Network-activate the plugin. The settings then live under your Network Admin, where you can either apply one configuration to every site at once or configure individual subsites from the network screen. If you activate the plugin on a single site instead, it only ever affects that site.

How do I disable WooCommerce product reviews?

WooCommerce product reviews are stored as comments on the product post type, so disabling comments on product turns reviews off too. To remove reviews that already exist, use the Delete Comments tool and select the product post type.

Can I configure the plugin from WP-CLI?

Yes. Settings and deletion are both scriptable, which is useful across a fleet of sites:

wp disable-comments settings --xmlrpc --rest-api
wp disable-comments delete --types=all

WordPress 6.9 added “Notes” in the Block Editor. Will this plugin break them?

No, as long as you allow them. Notes are technically a comment type (note), so a blanket disable would switch them off along with everything else. Use the Enable Certain Comment Types setting to keep Notes working while all other comments stay disabled.

I disabled comments but a cached page still shows the comment form.

As of version 2.8.0 the plugin clears page caches automatically whenever you save settings or delete comments, so this should resolve itself. If your host or CDN is not covered, it can hook disable_comments_purge_caches to clear its own cache at the same moment.

Note that the plugin never touches your object cache — only page caches. The stale thing is rendered HTML.

Can AI assistants read my comment settings?

Yes, on WordPress 6.9 and above. The plugin registers a read-only disable-comments/get-status ability through the WordPress Abilities API, so AI assistants, the command palette and MCP clients can ask the site where comments are disabled. It is read-only and requires the manage_options capability — nothing can change your settings through it.

What happens if I deactivate the plugin?

Comments go back to whatever WordPress and your theme did before. The plugin filters comment status at runtime rather than rewriting your posts, so your original per-post settings are still intact underneath.

The one exception is the Delete Comments tool: comments it removed are permanently gone and deactivating will not bring them back.

One of my many websites has been getting hacked by numerous Russian comments, as many as twenty a day! I spent hours online with my hosting company, InMotion Hosting, trying to block this, but they suggested using their CloudFlare feature, which was a total pain! I then researched how to block comments on a WordPress site and this was just as much of a pain, with no way to block comments on all posts and pages. Then I discovered this plugin and it worked in about two minutes to block comments everywhere on the site. Thank you!
