Yesterday I beat ARTORIAS

And I am still buzzing and I am so so so proud of myself and I need to talk about it and I only know two people who know what it means.

If anyone has 80 seconds, I rec watching Symbalily's first encounter with Artorias the Abysswalker:

Like O&S, this is one of the most iconic fights in the entire Dark Souls series. But I would say it's as much of a difficulty spike again relative to them as they are to the game before them.

Context: Artorias is the great legendary hero you've been hearing about all through the base game. But now he's been defeated by the Abyss, with his left arm shattered (his sword arm, so he's fighting you by swinging a sword with his off hand) and his mind mostly gone.

(There is meta to be meta-ed about FromSoft's long line of incredibly badass disabled characters; I don't know if it's necessarily #unproblematic #goodrepresentation, given that so many of them are trying to kill you and it's often being used to evoke ruin and tragedy, but it's not nothing either. Adaptive king Artorias.)

The way he howls and shakes reminds me of nothing so much as the Tumblr story about the rabid raccoon. It's eerie and wrong and awful.

He is incredibly aggressive and incredibly fast, and if you start chipping his health down he draws on the Abyss to power himself up further in a way that rapidly makes his hits unblockable (at least for most builds), so you can only try to dodge. And he can and will one-hit kill you, and then do front flips on your corpse.

I think I had to level my brain up to do this fight. Holy shit.

I have been IMMERSED over the last few days, learning his patterns and rhythms, and now I feel weirdly close to Artorias and emotional about it. I gave his soul to an old friend of his to take care of. Sleep well, dude.

All upon the most amiable terms

Cretia was somewhat daunted at the prospect of going a visit to Lady Jane Knighton in Hampshire – one heard a deal of how exacting a lady she was! – that she was somewhat of a martinet among the philanthropic set –

But here was Vicky, that had also been invited, looked upon the excursion as quite the greatest treat – she and Lady Jane already had tremendous plans for reading the classics together – and she has that exceptional fine library that was her great-uncle’s there, the renowned scholar that corresponded with Mrs Carter –

It was quite the most agreeable thing that Mr Grigson had proposed that Vicky’s position in the household should be made a permanency. Sure she did not know how she should do without Vicky! For quite apart from how meticulous she was about keeping Cretia’s diary and her correspondence in order, and advising her as to what she might read, she was exceptional well-informed about the intricacies of the society Cretia was now moving in.

This was most useful, for although Cretia came about to make friends, there were sometimes questions she hesitated to ask. But Vicky’s Ma was the famed Sophy that was Lady Bexbury’s personal maid, and her sister was Miss Thomasine at Mamzelle Bridgette, and la, said Vicky, one will hear all the stories! And my sister Gertie has connexions with the horsey set. Then we have antient schoolfellows – and some make their debut, and others go out be governesses &C –

And Cretia was coming about on considerable terms of friendship with Janey Merrett, now that they were confederates in this plot of Lady Bexbury’s to unmask those sharping vipers Lady Venchall and Mrs Bramby. Janey’s dearest friend was Miss Thomasine, that had been at school with, Cretia heard so much about that school that she was quite in envy.

O, but Miss Thomasine – 'Sina – was also a less daunting figure than she had feared. Did not look one up and down and appraise one’s dress and sigh, but was ever agreeable to giving little hints on style. And so pretty – Vicky was well-looking enough, but 'Sina was, was there not a verse in the Bible, thou are black but comely?

Both the Jupp girls were magnificent equestriennes – fie, we was about stables from babies! –

She dared say that Rina would sneer and pout and make comments but really, they also had very polished manners – a very refined way of speaking –

She remarked on this to Janey, saying supposed it was the effect of that very fine school?

Janey shook her head. Fie, Sophy was ever very particular – just because they were brought up above the stables was no reason to show vulgar – though I daresay at necessity Gert can give fellows quite a tongue-lashing! – that is the middle sister, the one that shows an interest in helping Mr Jupp with the business –

Cretia sighed.

A footman came in with the post.

How delightful! a letter from Zipsie –

Janey looked up from her own letters. I say, Cretia, is there any likelihood that Iffling looks about for a governess for his children? I know several young women that are looking out for places –

Cretia made some calculations of the ages of the Iffling offspring and indeed, it must be coming about schoolroom years for 'em – has not said aught to me, yet, and neither has Rina – but may be in some concern that governesses would not wish to take a post at Anclewer.

Janey snorted. Why, one apprehends these days His Grace is carefully attended and minded, and that anyway, the way his affliction takes him is not towards any violence – sure there are establishments where the head of the house is in his right mind, or supposed so, and one would think twice about sending a young girl there –

Oh, entirely! Would not even molest a rose-bush, but address it very civil. I fancy my sister might be more of a problem, though she takes very little interest in the children. Still, do I have the chance, I will mention the matter to Iffling.

Janey suddenly jumped up, the letters in her lap fluttering to the floor as she went to the window. I would say, why, who is this comes? But I will hazard I know, though 'tis somewhat earlier than anticipated.

Cretia went to stand by Janey. She could see Lady Jane and Vicky, that had been sitting on the terrace with their books, stand up and move towards the portico.

The carriage halted. A footman ran forward with the step, and opened the door.

Oh.

Oh. This was not just an arrival. This was making an entrance, as Miss Addington emerged from the conveyance, paused for a moment, smiled radiantly at the approaching Lady Jane, and stepped down.

The two women clasped hands and kissed cheeks in greeting. One apprehended that they were quite the oldest of friends – Lady Jane an admirer of Miss Addington’s thespian art these many years.

It was ever surprizing to meet Miss Addington off-stage and find her by no means a large person – Janey had explained that she was able to command a compelling stage presence – and one noted this in particular beside the tall Lady Jane.

She turned to greet the rest of the company, and informed Janey and Cretia that she was entire apprized of the plot respecting those harpies and was very happy to assist in their designs. Murmured to 'Sina that did she know of any seamstress that cared to change her position for that of dresser in the theatre, Maggy had finally come about to concede that she should have some assistant – Heard that Vicky had been essaying her hand at translating certain Greek plays but they did not sound like to be agreeable to the Lord Chamberlain?

Vicky grinned and said that there were certain fine strong women’s parts but indeed she confided the like!

Miss Addington took a few days to recruit – la, you cannot imagine what 'tis like, getting a theatre company off on its travels round Lady Ollifaunt’s fine establishments! – as dear Lady Bexbury has remarked, would that one might breed or train sheepdogs to the task of herding actors! – but very shortly braced herself to the task of providing a little instruction to Janey and Cretia for their masquerade.

She sat 'em down at a card-table and they all engaged in play for a little while.

Ah, Lady Lucretia, 'twill serve very well that you seem a little hesitant – unfamiliar with the various games they are like to propose – perchance fumble somewhat with your cards – for one dares say they remember you sitting mumchance in a corner whilst they rooked your sister – So you will not require to act a part, whereas Janey –

O, indeed! cried Janey. Here am I, a bored young woman with an older husband, that has dragged me to live in the desert of Bloomsbury because 'tis so very handy for the Inns of Court – never discusses his cases with me, so I can convey no fine gossip about 'em – I do not think Venchall or Bramby ever had knowledge of him in bygone days but there may be ladies who did, or know ladies who did, and will titter behind their hands –

Cretia blushed.

Miss Addington nodded. That is your character, she said, And mayhap you have quite a conceit of your ability with the cards?

Oh, yes, they may have heard something of my mathematical studies, so I will – oh, not boast precisely, but indicate that there are principles that one may apply does one have that knowledge –

Exactly so!

So they practised, and got on, but there were also fine rides, and Janey took her sailing a time or two in her little boat Hypatia, and a deal of amiable conversation, and sitting on the terrace – for the weather was very fine and 'twas a pity to lurk indoors – reading and writing letters.

They also remembered to go feed the chickens, for the Samuels were visiting Tetterdene, where Sir Jacob was advising the Bexburys on forest management, and Lady Samuels had left very detailed instructions about the care of her beloved hens.

Cretia paused daily to admire what was quite a shrine to the late Admiral in the hall: a fine portrait of him in his uniform – his medals – various commissions and letters of commendation – watercolours of several of his ships –

A flying visit from Janey’s husband, 'twixt doing the family dutiful at Monks Garrowby and going to Sir Godfrey Allder’s philosophical convocation at Wallesfern. How very charming he was – one no longer wondered at his reputation – after a conversation in which he had led her to talk a good deal about herself she also no longer wondered at the revelations he elicited in the witness box!

So they were a happy little company all upon the most amiable terms – Lady Jane opened to Cretia about possible philanthropic matters she might interest herself in, that was very gratifying – in the evenings after dinner there was some reading of Shakspeare

And then, one day, when they were taking tea upon the lawn, came one of the footmen to say, was a carriage coming up the drive –

Lady Jane frowned, and said, had not been in any anticipation of company. She looked about 'em. And they all shook their heads.

– with a crest upon it, cannot yet make it out.

Lady Jane rose from her chair. Will go see what’s ado –

This unexpected intrusion put 'em all in somewhat of an agitation – who could it be?

A little while later, came back Lady Jane, with the Dowager Lady Bexbury, clad in unusually sombre fashion.

Miss Addington started up, a hand to her mouth. Is it – is it – ?

Lady Bexbury sighed and went to put her arms about the actress. Yes, my dear. Hywel died quite sudden – no long-drawn-out deathbed scene – we must consider it a happy release

The lovely voice quivered.

– I did not want you to learn the news from the morning papers so came quite directly.

Lady Jane rested a hand on Miss Addington’s shoulder, that was shaking with sobs. I know what an old friend he was –

Gave me my first chance when I was a very unformed little actress – we acted together so well for so long –

– And to you too, Clorinda.

For one perceived that she, too, had tears on her cheeks.

Spotlight on Tag Wrangling

Background

Over the last year, Tag Wranglers have been actively discussing how to make fandom metatags more useful to users, both to find the content they're looking for and filter out the content they aren't. Since our last update, these discussions have now concluded, and we want to provide an update about how our guidelines have changed.

Fandom metatags allow Tag Wranglers to connect groups of related fandoms together so that they can be more easily filtered on as a group. For example, if you're interested in all works related to Game of Thrones (TV), including the related novels or the 2014 video game, you may be interested in filtering on its metatag: A Song of Ice and Fire & Related Fandoms. Filtering on the metatag means that you will find all the works tagged with the metatag itself or tagged with any of its individual subtags. In addition to this, having a group of fandoms connected together as a metatag and subtags means that selecting "Exclude crossovers" in the sidebar will not exclude works tagged with more than one subtag, and that selecting "Show only crossovers" will not include works tagged more than one subtags.

Metatags are different from merging ("synning") tags. When two tags are merged, the filters will treat them as if they are the same tag. When they are moved together under a metatag, each can still be filtered out individually from the metatag.

Guidelines update

Following extensive discussion, we have updated our guidelines related to fandom metatag trees, including when to create a metatag for related fandoms, when to merge closely related fandoms into one fandom tag (such as merging an anime and a manga), and when to split out subtags from a currently merged tag. The below paragraphs detail these updates and link to where you can find more information.

Metatag guidelines

Moving forward, Tag Wranglers may connect related fandoms using a metatag if there are at least two canons already canonized on AO3 that are:

  • Closely related adaptations;
  • The same story adapted across different media; or
  • Canon with official prequels, sequels, or other related adaptations set in a shared universe.

Whether a fandom metatag is created will vary based on the specific fandom. Not all fandoms will require a metatag, even if they fit the above criteria, and some fandoms with complex and sprawling canons may require multiple levels of metatags. Fandoms that do not fit one of the above criteria can be evaluated for a metatag on a case by case basis, focusing on what would be most useful to the majority of its fans. Tag Wranglers are fans of these canons as well and may base their decisions on a variety of factors such as whether the fan base generally considers these separate canons as distinct, or to what extent fans of different adaptations overlap.

Existing metatags, such as Star Wars - All Media Types or Marvel will not be required to match these rules or formats. These formats and guidelines will be applied to newly created fandom tags or existing tags if Tag Wranglers or users request changes.

In addition to determining when a metatag may be created, Tag Wranglers have also identified some circumstances where a metatag would not be beneficial to the majority of fans and therefore these fandoms will be canonized separately, not linked by a metatag. These are generally fandoms that are not closely related, such as:

  • Fandoms which are only connected by minor crossover events
  • Fandoms which share a performer, director, or creator/creative team but are not related through a shared continuity, shared characters, or other shared elements

You can find the full list of situations where Tag Wranglers decided a metatag would not be beneficial in the Metatag Wrangling Guidelines.

Fandom merging guidelines

Similar to determining which existing tags should have a metatag and don't currently, existing tags that have multiple adaptations merged together into one fandom tag may instead canonize their adaptations and subtag them to a metatag if they meet the guidelines above for when to create a metatag. These will also be handled on a case by case basis based on what is most appropriate for the fandom.

Finally, Tag Wranglers reviewed their guidelines on when to merge fandom tags for two related adaptations into one shared fandom tag (e.g. fandom tags like Naruto (Anime & Manga)), partially in relation to anime and manga fandoms. Going forward, when requested by users and/or Tag Wranglers, fandom tags for nearly identical adaptations may be merged if it is determined that this will be what is most useful to AO3 users. These requests will always be examined on a case by case basis.

Canonizing adaptations separately will remain the default, as it's much easier to merge later if appropriate than it is to separate them. This is particularly true in the case of ongoing canons where it's highly possible that the adaptations may diverge in plot, character development, etc.

Changes in progress

As part of these guideline updates, we've already begun processing some commonly requested metatag and fandom changes. The below list represents a small sample of changes that we've already made in response to requests from Tag Wranglers and users. This is not a comprehensive list of every change we have made or will make, but these examples show how the above changes may look in practice.

Metatag change examples

Fandom merging examples

Other fandoms that have recently been updated to merge separate medias, add a metatag, and/or split out subtags to form a new fandom tree include: How to Train Your Dragon, KonoSuba, A Certain Magical Index, Uma Musume, Nine Worlds Series - Victoria Goddard, Monogatari Series - Nisio Isin, and Solo Leveling.

The above changes are already live on AO3, and others will be made in the coming days as wranglers and users request changes to their fandom's structure in connection with this change.

Have questions or want to request a metatag change?

You can find these specific guideline updates on our Metatag and Fandom Wrangling Guideline pages. As mentioned above, other fandoms may already be discussing making changes. These discussions will also include requests from users who've previously submitted feedback to Support. If you have submitted a request within the past six months asking for a metatag or merger to be considered, there is no need to submit another request at this time as your request is already being reviewed.

For more information about AO3's tag system generally, check out the Tags FAQ. To learn more about Tag Wrangling, refer to the Tag Wrangler position description or the committee description.

If you have questions about specific tags, want to request a change to your fandom's metatag, or have other questions about this change, please contact Support instead of leaving a comment on this post. Support handles questions and requests related to how tags are sorted and connected in addition to providing technical support to AO3's users.

Do not contact Support if the tags you wish to ask about are less than one month old. Please give Tag Wranglers time to handle new tags and wait to request changes until at least one month after a tag's first use.

Finally, while we know the majority of users find having a metatag helpful, we are aware that not everyone agrees with this due to the limits it creates on filtering. As such, we wanted to provide some advice on how to filter out works tagged with the metatag, if you wish to. Please select "How to exclude works tagged with a metatag" below to expand the instructions on excluding works tagged with a metatag.

How to exclude works tagged with a metatag

You can exclude works tagged with a metatag using the metatag's Tag ID, using the following process. For ease of use, we recommend you do this on a computer rather than on your mobile device.

Begin by finding the Tag ID of the metatag you want to filter out from its source code. Open the works page of the metatag you want to filter out, such as The Hobbit - All Media Types. Right-click on the "Favorite Tag" button, then select "Inspect". In the window that opens, locate the line that says: value="X" name="favorite_tag[tag_id]" where X is the ID of your tag. It should be directly above what is automatically highlighted when you click Inspect.

For this example, the Tag ID for The Hobbit - All Media Types is 541478. This is a fandom tag, so the search operator you'll need is fandom_ids:541478. (You can use this trick for other tag types, just swap the word fandom in fandom_ids for character, relationship, or freeform.)

Next, go to the works page for the specific subfandom whose works you want to read. For this example, we'll use The Hobbit - J. R. R. Tolkien.

In the Filters sidebar, enter -fandom_ids:541478 in the "Search within results" field. This will show you all works tagged with "The Hobbit - J. R. R. Tolkien", except those that are also tagged with "The Hobbit - All Media Types" (viewable here).

If filtering by tag ID is something you want to do often and you'd like to make your life a bit easier, you can use an unofficial script to display the tag ID of all canonical tags directly on the works page (if you're unfamiliar with scripts, you can find more information in our Unofficial Browser Tools FAQ).

Theme: Crack Treated Seriously

Summary: Théoden and Denethor hunt the elusive Slash Fairy after she makes them... do things. Over and over. Featuring the horses of Middle Earth, with music by Fountains of Wayne, Celine Dion and Kenny Loggins.

Reccer's Notes: This month's theme is "ideas that are very, very bonkers, but approached with the utmost dedication to making it work within whatever passes for reality in that fandom." Author's dedication is key in this humorous tale of slash spreading like a glorious spready thing in the LOTR world and you'll believe that Denethor and Théoden-King need each other whether they realize it or not. The fairy is merely the mechanism. Just check out the other pairings and revel the night away! I especially liked that femmeslash was included, and also horses.

Review copy provided by the publisher. Also the author is a dear friend, and I read an earlier draft.

I'm so glad we're finally closing in on the day when the rest of you can talk about this delightful weird book with me. If you've been reading John's short stories for all these years, rest assured that this book has the same heart and the same absolutely fresh take on the world and its structures. If you haven't, what a treat you have ahead of you! Go forth and read!

This book, though. Okay. Ellie looks after the structure of the universe far more than most of us with physics training. She regularly visits the skunkworks, an extra-universe space that allows for tweaking and re-coding the laws of this and other universes. John puts the physics in metaphysics here--there's a whole community of people dedicated to this work in a way that's a lot more like a branch of engineering, architecture, or software design.

Unfortunately, most of that community has been poisoned against her by her self-righteous, violent, and gaslighting-prone sister Chris. And when their mother dies, Ellie is left scrambling against changes in the laws of physics themselves. She's not sure who she can trust. Thank goodness for her hulking cousin Daniel, the most food-focused metaphysician you'll ever meet.

So yeah, you'll be intrigued, you'll be hooked, but you will also be hungry. Maybe it's that John and I have similar taste in food (the bao! the brussels sprouts! WHAT DID YOU DO TO THAT EGG TART, CHU), but I was on the edge of my seat mostly to find out how Ellie and Daniel would beat Chris's machinations but also a tiny bit to see what food item Daniel would come up with next. I always knew that cooking was crucial to the maintenance of space-time. Soon the rest of you can see why. Highly recommended.

In the midst of this week, we are in a block of doctor's appointments, but following this afternoon's I climbed up to the railings behind the Salem Street Burying Ground and hung over them with my camera, an operation which still put me in snow to mid-calf. Its winter-drifted gravestones date from the late seventeenth through the late nineteenth centuries, with one modern interpolation for the unmarked, enslaved dead. I should go back for their slate-carved winged skulls in spring.

The current sunset is one of those violet riots, but at the time of this photo, the clouds above the fan of trees were just starting to flush gilt-grey. That attenuated stretch of the Mystic that always looks more like an industrial canal than a river was a glaucous freeze at its margins and flat-skimmed snow down its center. I cannot believe I never encountered Socalled's Ghettoblaster (2006) until its twentieth anniversary. Then again, only forty years after the fact did it occur to me that I would have accepted The Last Battle (1956) much more readily if Lewis had made it Ragnarök instead of Revelations.

Didn't want to get up this morning. Bed so warm, world so cold. Checked my phone in bed and saw 47 has taken to wearing a glove on his left hand to hide the bruising,  like Cosmo Gilt. Yeah, could be because of aspirin use-- I used to get amazing bruises back in my aspirin and codeine days-- but someone cheerfully remarked that the Queen had a similar bruise on her hand when greeting Lettuce Liz, and two days later she was dead. Of course if he's taking aspirin he's less likely to have a stroke, which is unfortunate, but maybe the Big Macs will do for his heart.

Is still freezing out because wind chill. Went out and scraped packed snow off front walkway and a bit of the sidewalk, but there's ice underneath. It comes up if you hack at the right angle but that irritates my touchy neck vertebrae so I couldn't finish. Removed a bit of the snow mountain in front of the bins and the gas meter. Bins aren't going out any time soon and new company is making noises about not taking bagged recycling like the city used to, but the gas reader is coming next week. Mind, the gas co. should just do another estimate this month and cut their losses.

Reading is still Dr. Siri but I wanted a break and some easily understood classical English mystery,  so I got a .99 special (and why doesn't this keyboard have a cents sign? I can have £ and € and ¥, but cents, no.) It was very silly and I deleted it from my account so I don't even know what it was called. Then had recourse to a Dr. Priestley, but Rhode has a verbal tick that increasingly grates. Whenever a witness is asked about an event, the answer begins with either 'I'll tell you how it was' or 'It was like this.'  Ah well. Back to Dr. Siri.

Dead tree is Flora's Fury to get it off the shelf. I should read at least Flora's Dare to refresh the memory, but Libby doesn't have it and it's non-circulating at the library. Still, the world building is a lot of fun and I'm enjoying it.

Still here.

We got 6-8 inches of snow, and a lot of cold, but we're still here. Power works, gas works, water works. I'm going out now to try to take down the plowed wall next to the cars. It only took 2 days to see a snowplow -- but the area is still closed down through tomorrow, so not surprising.

Not looking forward to more from next weekend.

ETA: Both cars have 2.5 feet of ice and snow along the side next to the lane. I couldn't budge it.
If the SU can't either, we may have to phone the incel across the street to dig it out for an exorbitant fee. If we didn't have the possibility of another storm, with wetter snow, this coming weekend I'd let it sit, but I will still have that doctor's appointment next week.

after the shingles shot, I didn't feel right until *Sunday*. Thanks for the sympathetic words on my last post. (We'll do it all again for shot #2 in a couple of months.)

+ There's a drive for knitted or crocheted balaclavas for the Minneapolis protesters, so I'm looking into doing that, except I've used nearly all my appropriate worsted weight yarn that's not earmarked for money-making projects. Not sure what to do. Anybody got a yarn stash they don't need? Or I guess I could go to walmart, which, sadly, is cheaper than Michaels. Or I could order an equivalent $ number of balaclavas from amazon and have them sent there. Hmm.

I hope you're all doing well & keeping up your spirit in spite of all the horrors. Much love! <333

I'm kinda tempted to make a Wikipedia account so I can update Mary Lambert's discography - her page is missing the singles Tempest from last year and Minneapolis from last week.

imho they're both really good songs.

This month is almost over, so, let's hear it. *g* How did it go with your fannish creativity?

Did you manage to make a thing?

Created fanart or made vids? Wrote fic or meta? How about picspams, link collections, character mood boards, themed playlists, promo posts, or whatever else you create for fannish enjoyment?

Here's the place to share it with us! Leave a link in the comments, or elaborate on it as much as you want.
