Obligatory Pinned Post
Welcome to my journal. I've had one of these things for over 18 years, so I suppose it's time to put up one of those "About Me" posts.
Short intro bits:
Interests
I don't think of my interests as a bundle of fandoms. It's taken me quite a while to figure out how to ID "fandoms I am into" in a way that's relevant for communication with other people. My interests are partially covered by on my profile (although some of the interests listed are just there for fun), but in addition to those:
* I'm really into ebooks. A lot.
* I'm also really into PDFs. I'm aware this is a weird thing to be "into." (Ebooks used to be a weird interest.)
* I have an interest in copyright law much like farmers have an interest in storms: there's an awareness that you need some of the attached benefits, but you really wish there were a way to lessen the intensity and direct presence in your life.
* I gave on on D&D before 2nd edition came out. I have never played 3rd, 4th, or 5th ed; 5E has not fixed the reasons I quit playing.
* I like weird TTRPGs. Especially ones that don't have a "kill things to get better at killing things" approach to gaming. Recently, I like solo TTRPGs.
* This list may occasionally be updated; it's less about "these are my top/current interests" and closer to "here's how I approach some of my interests." It's supposed to give you a sense of how I communicate more than actually tell you what I'm into right now.
Personal life is mostly private, but there are a few public details:
* Leftist/progressive living in an ultra-blue zone in a very-blue state in the US.
* I'm Pagan, of a variety most people have never heard of. "Something like Wicca" is close enough for public discussion. (It's not secret, just complicated.)
* Cis bi polyamorous White woman, married to a cis bi man for more than 20 years. She/her is preferred but I don't care if people don't notice or remember that.
* Two adult children who live with us. Most details about them go under lock.
* I have a (dormant) paralegal degree, which I got mostly because I loved working with legal docs and wanted to understand them better.
* I'm active on Tumblr and am in too many Discord servers. I also have a Pillowfort, use Slack, and am on some mailing lists. I'm not putting links here in public.
* My hair is longer than my arms and I try to keep it dyed teal.
Current Fandom Interests
Note: I do not want spoilers about anything I ever plan to watch, read, or listen to.
Second note: I ship them all. Assume that means "yes, them too; everyone." (This is not literally true, because there are characters I dislike, and plenty more that I just haven't thought about getting together. But overall... I am happy to imagine any pairing, and I could enjoy fic about any pairing.)
* I'm currently into My Hero Academia, including manga, including Vigilantes; I am in seven BNHA Discord servers. I am behind on the anime and manga, although I kept up through 5th season.
* I have watched The Untamed and started getting into danmei.
* Have not yet (as of Jan 1 2023) seen Sandman, Wednesday, the new Witcher thing, or the fourth season of Stranger Things. They're all on the to-watch list. Maybe when I run out of Wangxian fic I want to read.
* I have been a Destiel shipper since November 5, 2020. I have seen exactly one episode of SPN--the pilot--and I plan to keep it that way.
* I'm probably not going to edit this often enough to keep up with things. And it almost doesn't matter... I rarely post directly about the fandom-media things I'm reading or watching. However, I do sometimes get into long chats on Discord about them.
* I am tempted to do one of those Tumblr posts that says "if this gets 10k notes I'll read Homestuck." I am still stalled out partway through Part 4.
Older/perennial fandoms, in order that they come to mind rather than importance or interest level:
* DCU, especially Batfamily (although I lost track about when the "Nu 52" came out and my awareness of canon gets spotty after that)
* White Collar - stopped rewatching. Maybe I'll get past season 4 eventually.
* MCU pre-Endgame. (Someday I'll finish watching Endgame. Probably.)
* Elfquest - my first fandom
* Vorkosigan series - the canon I read so I could read a friend's fanfic
* Flight Rising - only a "fandom" by technicality. But I've been playing the game for more than 8 years, and I've written fic for it, so it goes on the list. (This is fading. I have dropped away from daily play.)
* My Yuletide tag and my plotbunnies tag both cover various fandom interests.
Policies
I don't have policies about what other people are allowed to do with their journals, so... following is fine, granting or not granting access is fine. I'm selective about following and downright picky about granting access, since I lock posts about my job and my family.
I don't mind argumentative discussions, disagreements, counterpoints, or being corrected. That doesn't mean I want my journal to be full of strife. I am much mellower online now than I used to be.
Reminders are fine: "You said you were gonna post a thing about X when you had time... do you have time yet?" or whatever.
I would like to be more active on DW and welcome anything that nudges me in that direction.
Short intro bits:
- Jump in anywhere. I don't care if comments are off-topic; I don't mind getting comments on incredibly old posts. You don't have to introduce yourself first.
- Strangers: please be polite. Excessively rude comments may be mocked or deleted at my whim. Or both. I will decide what's "excessively rude." Anon comments are screened to allow me to decide without stressing out my other guests. If you're not sure what the standards are, feel free to browse the archives first.
- Contents are random. This journal doesn't have a theme; I don't stick to specific topics. However, I often post about copyright activism, fandom, gaming, and religion. (Not all the "religion" posts will be labeled as such.)
- CNTW ("Choose not to warn") - I often don't keyword-tag for triggery topics, although I try to put anything too intense inside a cut tag. I try to be mindful of what shows up on people's read lists but my own space sometime has graphic talk without warnings.
- Links are okay. Anything public is okay to link to; asking is not necessary. (For that matter, private posts are okay to link to, but I'm not opening it up because someone wants to see it.)

I can't recall if I saw your name there or not, but we're doing a re-read of the WOT series at

It's good to see an old friend!

...Hello! Welcome to Dreamwidth! I'm currently working through

Twitter? I only have a few friendships there, and mostly it's a platform where people mouth off opinions, so that's easier to release. It took me a while to understand how Twitter worked, but once I got into the flow, it had the same structure that could lead to hours lost looking for the next dopamine hit.
The next big thing for me to figure out how to use without getting lost for hours is YouTube. It is a beautiful tool for entertainment and education, but oh, it is so easy to fall down rabbit holes there. I don't want to get rid of it, but I need to set up systems to prevent overindulgence.
That was probably way more information than you wanted!

...I am always happy to rant about social media communities and mostly What's Wrong With That New One.
(I have not finished my 3-part Pillowfort rant because there doesn't seem to be much point. They haven't addressed Issue #1: No Money Plan, and that's going to kill them long before bad social dynamics come into play.)

They don't have a list of features that will be part of the premium/subscription plan, much less have those features ready to go.
They don't have any idea how many paid-vs-free users they need to survive. (Dreamwidth was created with the awareness that every paid subscription is supporting a specific number of free accounts, so when they look over their "active in the last month" records, they know how many need to be paid to survive.)
They don't have a payment system set up, other than "donate to us." Don't have a way to deal with people's credit card info, recurring payments, and so on.
I really like some of Pillowfort's features - the combination of reverse-chrono blog-with-reblogging plus communities with discussions that work like forums (post with the most recent comment jumps to the top) is unique. I'd love to see that explored more.
OTOH, they're missing some features I'd think were obvious - like the ability to browse communities in alphabetical order. Or by most recent activity.

They do have the capability to handle credit cards and recurring payments now - I think they're using Authorize.net for that.
But yeah, I like a lot of what they have to offer, and I like a lot of their ethos, but I'm getting increasingly concerned because they're a team of, what, 7? (including 3 part-timers for dev and infosec), and every time they encounter a crisis, the number of work-hours and funding they have available means the best they can do is go all hands on deck to handle the problem and push everything else back another four months. And sooner or later that's going to catch up with them.
