<Project Concept Statement>

Our application is titled “SPOT”; implicating the meaning of location as well as the act of finding a place. Our service provides navigation to smoking areas based on the smart phone application. We are going to utilize GPS and AR (Augmented reality) technology overall. There are two modes provided to the user: GPS mode and AR mode. Based on GPS system, map (navigation) is provided. While users are close to the place they’re looking for, through AR system, they will be able to find the place easily with entertaining elements (e.g. typo, color code) on the screen, indicating the exact boundary of the smoking area.

Also, by using collective intelligence, our map will be created based on user’s participation. The locations will be marked on to the map by any participant who is using the service. The reported location will be marked with a specific sign (e.g. flag, color, name…undecided yet) to show who has reported the location. Also, the app will be kept up-to-date by allowing users to report any smoking areas that are closed down. As the smoking area is a necessity in our daily lives and yet we find difficulty locating these places, our service will aid the general public to find and avoid such places in complex or unfamiliar areas.

 <Service Goal>

Cities are becoming more and more complex. It is even difficult to find places for the simplest human desire. The targeted user of our service is anybody who feels inconvenient in finding smoking areas. We aim to provide a double-sided service; meaning that it can aid both smokers who want to find an authorized spot to smoke and non-smokers who want to avoid secondhand smoke.

Through the service, we are aiming to achieve the goals below;

– To induce voluntary engagement of users to create the map

– To utilize and combine collective intelligence and GPS technology

– To contribute to public benefit through fusing in fun element into the map

ex)reduce smoking in non-smoking areas

– To allow users to be aware of smoking areas location

– To utilize AR in order to aid people to figure out the exact boundary of smoking areas.

<User Scenario>

Scenario A: Smoker

  • Urge to smoke, but no smoking area
  • Turns on app; navigate through map mode, reach the area, check the boundary
  • memorize the area

A smoker is heading for a business meeting in Gangnam area. The user reaches the meeting place quite earlier than expected, and feels the urge to smoke for relaxation. However, he/she cannot see any smoking area at the moment. The user turns on ‘SPOT’ to check out if there is any smoking area nearby, and it turns out there is one nearby. He/she activates navigation function to reach the area and finally, there is a smoking area. Before turning off the app, the user touches on AR mode to check out the boundary and smokes safely in the legal area.

Scenario B: Non-smoker

  • Feels very unpleasant about smokers
  • Reaches Gangnam for a meeting, full of smokers
  • Turns on app; check where the spots are at one glance, and avoid
  • But encounters a new smoking place not registered in the map; takes photo, sends to app

A non-smoker student, feeling very unpleasant about smoke, always wanted to avoid from smoking areas but could not do so as the smoking areas pop-up all of sudden. It’s not a problem when he/she visits familiar places, but not in unfamiliar places. As a student, he/she does not visit office area such as Yeoksam so often; but it’s now time to visit his/her coach who has office in that area. The user turns on the application to check where the smoking areas are, and the map shows the nearby smoking areas with flags. The user decides to go through one road without any smoking area, but then encounters a new smoking place not registered in the map. To prevent encountering the same place again next time, the user takes a photo of the place and sends to the app.

<Target User>

The targeted user of our service is either smokers looking for public smoking areas or non-smokers who would rather indicate smokers to smoking areas and avoid secondhand smoke. Also, anybody who is looking for smoking areas in places they are unfamiliar with and anybody who feels difficulty finding locations or ways using existing maps can benefit from using our service. However, since our system is based on smartphone application and GPS technology, the younger generation (20s to 30s) who are familiar with the technology will be our main target users.

<Survey Analysis>

Do you smoke? : non-smokers : smokers = 6 : 4

How often do you use smoking area when you smoke?

: more than 50 % answered that they use smoking area (compare to the observation result, majority of smokers did not care for smoking areas, and they were not aware of non-smoking areas(or didn’t care at all)

What is your alternative when you cannot find a smoking area?

: more than 60 % answered that they smoke only if there’s no one around / about 30 % answered that they smoke where other smokers are already smoking. -> people feel less guiltiness if someone is already smoking in non-smoking area

How difficult is it for you to locate a smoking area?

: more than 70% felt it was difficult to locate a smoking area

the reason might be the lack of smoking area it-self or lack of signs and navigation to the smoking areas.

What kind of inconveniences have you faced as a smoker?

: more than 80 % of smokers are having a hard time to find the smoking area /almost half are feeling pressure from non-smokers (many non-smokers have negative perception on smokers) / about 40 % felt crowdedness in smoking areas – smokers want many & larger smoking area/ 1/5 got fined for smoking in non-smoking area. = shows that many smokers do smoke on non-smoking areas / (what can we do for female smokers?)

How helpful would it be if there is a service that provides the location of smoking areas?

: about 60 % felt the need of service.

What is your visual preference for navigation?

: About 90 % felt more comfortable with Map-based navigation – Default mode will be Map.

Which version is easier to interpret in the mobile phone?

: Color code and sign were almost similar, but color coding system was higher. Smoking sign might be too direct(?) to use application in public area

Please rate how much you feel unpleasant about smoking

: In general, non-smokers feel unpleasant about smoking

If you can reduce smoking out of smoking areas, how much would you participate in the service that collects location of smoking areas>

: More than 50 % are willing to participate in our service. It is possible to continue with our service, especially the part with collecting smoking area locations from users.

Project Concept Statement

Our team, P!nk includes Hyunbae Earm, Seo Yeon Kim, Jung Wan Bae and Nayeon Kim as teammate. We’re all going to work together on all the processes regarding service development such as idea developing & visualisation (illustration, sketches), user research, UX/UI design, prototyping and more.

Our application is titled “SPOT”; implicating the meaning of location as well as the act of finding a place.  Our service provides AR map based on smart phone application. Using collective intelligence, our map will be created based on user’s participation. There are 3 maps, each having its own concept; 3 concepts are trash bins, smoking areas, and public toilets. The locations of these public places/services will be marked on to the map by any participant who has used the service. The reported location will be marked with specific sign (e.g. flag, colour, name…undecided yet) to show who has reported the place and by registering the location, users will receive certain amount of land nearby (inside the application). Based on the amount of land they have, their rank/title will be decided. As all of these places are necessities in our daily lives, and yet we find difficulty locating these places, our service will aid the general public to find such places in complex or unfamiliar areas.

Cities are becoming more and more complex. It is even difficult to find places for the simplest human desire. The targeted user of our service is anybody who feels inconvenience in using ordinary maps, who wants to add detailed functions accordant to their everyday needs. Also anybody who is looking for trash bins/smoking areas/public toilets in places they are unfamiliar with and anybody who feels difficulty finding locations or ways using existing maps can benefit from using our service.

Through the service, we are aiming to achieve the goals below;

– To induce voluntary engagement of users to create the map consisting location of trash bins/smoking areas/public toilets by themselves

– To utilize and combine collective intelligence and GPS technology

– To contribute to public benefit through fusing in fun element into the map

ex)reduce smoking in non-smoking areas. reduce littering on roads.

– To allow users to be aware of trash bins/smoking areas/public toilets’ location

– To utilize AR in order to aid people who are weak with road finding (길치)

The users can utilize our service in such situation;

Scenario A: Searching for location. The user looks for a trash bin to throw away the empty plastic cup after drinking a coffee. He/she heads to the business meeting place, but cannot spot a single trash bin, and starts to get irritated. Suddenly ‘SPOT’ pops up in mind and the user selects to see where the nearest trash bin is; fortunately, there’s a trash bin nearby! Now he/she can memorize the location and not get irritated by it at next visit to the same place.

Also in case where users have located a new trash bin, the user can act like this;

Scenario B: Registering the location .The user looks for trash bin to throw away the empty plastic cup after drinking a coffee. He/she heads to the business meeting place, but can not spot a single trash bin, and starts to get irritated. He/she tries to get help from ‘SPOT’ but it was no use. Fortunately, he/she spots a trash bin few meters away; he/she litters the plastic cup and takes a photo of it to update the location of the trash bin on the app. The app goes through verification process and finally the map is up-to-date!

The user context of our service is pretty much simple and straightforward which makes it easy to anybody who is new to the service and also to anyone who is not comfortable with technology.

We are going to utilize GPS and AR (Augmented reality) technology overall. There are two modes provided to the user: GPS mode and AR mode. Based on GPS system, map(navigation) is provided. While users are close to the place they’re looking for, through AR system, they will be able to find the place easily with entertaining elements(typo / funny illustrations) on the screen.
