Atomic data is information that can't be broken down into smaller parts. The term is often applied to source data that hasn't been calculated but instead represents a concrete business reality. The following are illustrative examples.
Unit Sales
Unit sales for a particular model of bicycle.
Gross Revenue
Gross revenue broken down by transaction is source data that isn't calculated from anything. Metrics such as net revenue are based on multiple inputs and aren't considered atomic data.
Base Salary
The base salary of an employee is a hard number that isn't typically calculated from other data.
Postal Code
A postal code, or zip code, is atomic. Address isn't atomic as it is composed of multiple fields.
