Defect density is a type of quality metric that measures defects relative to complexity. For example, it is common for defect density to be measure defects per thousand lines of code or function points.
Formula
Defect density = (number of defects) / size
Here size can be any measure of complexity such as function points or lines of code.
Defect density should not be confused with defect rate which is the percentage of units with a defect. Generally speaking, defect rate applies to manufacturing and defect density to software development.
