Quality things are products and services for which consumers strongly differentiate between high and low quality items. These are the categories of goods and services where there are vast price differences and/or sales volume differences between items viewed as high quality and those that are viewed as lower quality.

What is Quality?

Quality is the value of a product or service to the customer. For some types of goods, consumers expect a basic level of quality but aren't willing to pay more for a higher quality item. For example, toothpicks are a category where you may expect them to be made of wood and not have a strange taste or smell but you're not really interested in increased quality beyond these basic expectations.

For quality products, consumers see vast differences in quality from one offering to another. This can allow the producer to charge higher prices such as a smartphone that is fundamentally more expensive than the alternatives but consumers prefer it nonetheless. In some cases, sellers charge a standard price but achieve higher sales volumes because their offering is viewed as quality. For example, the box office sales of a good movie versus a terrible one.
