CÉLINE ALOÉ

GROUP CHIEF EXECUTIVE OFFICER

I have been in this business for longer than I care to remember. Language learning and teaching have always been more of a passion to me than a job. I feel strongly that the experience that the young people have with us is one that they will remember for a very long time and what I love about our team is that we all care about what we do.

English is an ever more important language in the world and yes, it is a huge benefit to these young people to come to the UK to learn it. However, I believe that it is also a huge benefit to them to experience a different culture, be away from home and have to cope with all that it entails and meet and befriend people their own age from all over the world.

Academic

Academic

ImageWe know how important it is for each individual student to find their own path in language learning. We use a wide range of methods to engage and stimulate our students. This is why we have created a curriculum based on the students’ age, level and needs, structured into four different programmes*:

  • FUN (Ages 8-10): Engaging lessons that offer a wide range of materials and activities specific for our young learners. It makes games into lessons and lessons into games. Available in levels A1-B1;
  • CONNECTION (Ages 10-13): Dynamic lessons covering a variety of topics and media, designed to engage students using tools native to the fast-paced world they
    are growing up in. Available in levels A1-C1;
  • ACTION (Ages 13-16): Lessons tailored for learners stepping into their teenage years. This programme focuses on activating students’ knowledge and competencies to
    balance developing a personal voice while contributing effectively to a team. Available in levels A1-C2;
  • PURPOSE (Ages 16-18): Lessons tailored for our students approaching adulthood, designed to kickstart their lives not only as maturing youths but also as forward-thinking global citizens. Available in levels A1-C2;

The Connection, Action, and Purpose programmes consist of three different lessons a day:

  1. Focus on Linguistics
    These lessons aim to empower our students’ linguistic awareness and capabilities by working on all language skills (reading, writing, listening, speaking) and systems
    (grammar, phonology, lexis, discourse), as well as using materials relevant to exam preparation (KET, PET, FCE, CAE, TOEFL, IELTS, GESE).
  2. Focus on Leadership
    This programme is designed to equip students with essential 21st-century skills, focusing on leadership development, communication and teamwork. Students build the confidence and competencies needed to grow into empowered young adults.
  3. Focus on Culture
    These lessons combine CLIL and British culture, allowing students to use English to explore a range of disciplines, including art, literature, natural sciences, as well as the history and geography of the UK.

Placement Tests
We offer classes at all levels from Elementary to Advanced. Students take a placement test on their first day of lessons to ensure they are placed at the correct level**. We also offer a specific test for students with special needs.

Examinations
We offer the option of taking the Trinity College London Graded Examination in Spoken English (GESE) on site for courses of 10 days or longer.***

Year-round Programmes

We can offer alternative, bespoke English language lessons for our ministay groups. We can deliver a range of English for Specific Purposes courses on request so please contact the team to discuss your group’s requirements.

Students are taught in class sizes up to 16.

*These ranges provide a reference point and are not absolute. Changes will be made when appropriate based on class sizes and student’s ages and abilities.
**Due to the variability of students’ test results, a single class may occasionally include students of slightly different levels.
***Minimum of 10 students across all groups required to source an examiner.
Welfare

Welfare

ImageAs specialists in programmes for young people aged 8-17, the safeguarding of children is fundamental to the way UKLC views and ensures the well-being of its students. We have developed robust systems and processes for managing the welfare of the children in our centres.

STEPS WE TAKE TO ENSURE THE WELFARE OF STUDENTS:

  • All UKLC team members undergo appropriate background and safeguarding checks.
  • A dedicated Safeguarding and Welfare Coordinator is appointed to every site during the summer. For year-round groups, our Ministay Coordinators manage safeguarding and welfare support.
  • All students are given an induction lesson highlighting the rules for their centre and all Group Leaders attend an induction meeting wherein they receive safeguarding training when they arrive. This training details their responsibilities and ours.
  • We work with Group Leaders to ensure their students have a safe and enjoyable stay, taking full responsibility for students when they are in lessons and on scheduled activities. We assist Group Leaders in ensuring students’ safety and care outside of scheduled activities and during excursions.
  • The UKLC team is available 24 hours a day for any issues that may arise and there is a 24-hour emergency number for partners, parents and students.
  • All students get a UKLC wristband and lanyard to be worn at all times.
  • Individuals are allocated to a UKLC team member who will act as their Group Leader and point of reference at all times (summer only).
  • Our Operations and Safeguarding Handbook (OSH) is distributed to all team members and is available to download on the website. Policies and procedures for welfare and safeguarding are available on our website and in our downloadable handbooks.

STUDENT RESILIENCE AND WELLBEING:

Whilst the physical welfare and safety of our students has always been important, we believe that now, more so than ever, we need to focus on their emotional wellbeing.

In recent years there has been a greater awareness of mental health in young people. An experience away from home, especially in the current global climate, is an opportunity to strengthen that.

Along with sessions on General Safety and e-Safety, we have introduced a new session for every student.

We dedicate lesson time to “Resilience and Wellbeing”. This lesson helps students to process the ever-changing world around them and their ability to adapt to it. We also offer them ideas and tools to manage their own wellbeing.

I came towards the tail end of the programme, my first shift was a 3am airport run! The emotions were running high and good to see the level of rapport and bonds being created was great. Maybe it was something I can look forward to.

Seeing students gather at Clifton College from all corners of the world was a great sight. From being reluctant to speak in English, to explaining the lesson content to each other, taking part in sports and evening activities and mixing so well was a great sight.

I have developed into a much better all rounded teacher in catering to different student's needs and understanding how they learn. It is definitely something that I would like to take part in again.

This was my first time working at a UKLC Summer Camp and I learnt a huge amount during my time there. The rest of the team were great; friendly, approachable and supportive - there was always someone around to ask if I was unsure of anything.

I loved the fact that there was already a curriculum, complete with easy to follow lesson plans and links to extra resources.

In addition to teaching, I was able to accompany some groups on their excursions; this helped me to make relevant links to the teaching materials and find out more about the local area. During the camp, I met so many new people - staff, students and team leaders - from all around the UK and abroad. It was amazing to make so many new connections! Altogether it was a very worthwhile experience!

Working with UKLC has been an incredibly meaningful and rewarding experience for me. Each day brings new joy and fulfilment as I watch young people from different parts of the world come together, initially a bit hesitant and unsure, but soon blossoming into open and confident individuals. My favourite quote about working with children is, “Work hard, be kind, and amazing things will happen.” And with UKLC, amazing things really do happen every day.

I am constantly inspired by the students’ eagerness to connect and help each other, regardless of language barriers or cultural differences. It’s truly heartwarming to see their eyes light up as they gain confidence, share laughter, and form genuine friendships. By the end of each course, they’re not only more skilled in English, but they also leave with a strong bond with their peers from different countries. Watching this transformation reaffirms why I love what I do.

Being a part of UKLC has shown me the incredible impact kindness and dedication can have on young people.

Firstly, Wycombe Abbey 2024 was in an amazing location. The school was situated inside a walled deer park with lots of trees and green space. Every morning on my way from the accommodation and school I was greeted by deer and other wildlife.

Secondly, I learnt so much from my students – their culture old and modern, their everyday lives and their goals and aspirations. I certainly learned not to judge a book by its cover.

Thirdly, I once again had the opportunity to work with UKLC, reunite with old colleagues and meet new ones. There was a lot of work to do but with a great team we all did our share and the time flew past.

Working with UKLC was an incredible opportunity that allowed me to grow professionally and personally. I particularly appreciated the collaborative environment and the chance to work with students from different backgrounds and cultures. My most enjoyable part of the summer was watching students become more confident in their language abilities and handing out their certificates to celebrate their progress.

If I had to sum up my experience working with UKLC in one sentence, I would say, "UKLC unlocked my potential to be the best teacher that I could be."

Before working with UKLC, I had no intention of teaching teenagers and young learners at all, but now, I find nothing more rewarding than seeing your class coming together and flourishing into a group of open and confident learners!

Being a part of UKLC has reminded me of why I entered education in the first place, to allow others to open the doors to wonderful opportunities, and UKLC has opened doors for me too!

I was quite nervous starting my first teaching job last summer but, it turned out to be an enriching and rewarding experience. The first few days before the students arrived helped put me at ease as they gave centre staff a chance to get to know each other before the intense schedule began.

I appreciated working alongside other new teachers who were in the same boat as me, as well as experienced teachers from whom I could learn. The month went incredibly quickly and could, at times, be overwhelming.

Whenever I needed extra support, the centre manager and course director were always available to answer my questions and offer feedback and guidance on my lessons. I learned a lot over the summer and would highly recommend working for UKLC!

It’s not easy to write a review of my experience teaching on a UKLC summer camp without it sounding like a sales pitch. The truth is, I loved it; I had a great time. It was one of the best short term teaching jobs I’ve ever had and I’ve had quite a few.

The induction before the first teaching day was sufficiently in-depth to make sure you feel confident about your role. There was a good mix of young teachers and older, experienced ones, and the management team were very supportive from start to finish. The pre-written lesson plans were really good; the content was both fun and educational, designed to be relevant and interesting to each age group and level of student. Class sizes weren’t too big and the students were generally a delight to work with.

If I had to do it all again, would I? Most definitely. I would recommend UKLC to any English teacher with time on their hands during the summer.

It was an enriching and unforgettable experience that left lasting memories. This summer was filled with opportunities to learn, explore, and grow, both professionally and personally. I thoroughly enjoyed working alongside my colleagues and engaging with my students, which made this journey even more fulfilling. The activities and shared moments allowed me to gain valuable experiences that I will carry forward in my career.

Teaching English at Kingswood with UKLC was an unforgettable experience with such supportive management. I worked with students from Italy, China, Spain, and other countries. Using the structured lesson plan with enjoyable activities, I saw the students' confidence grow every day. The role taught me the importance of clear communication and effective classroom management. My favourite part was seeing the students connect and communicate with each other in English, creating a supportive and fun learning environment.
