The sequel to The Darkness Outside of Us. I enjoyed it! It's both interestingly different from the first book and is satisfying on the level of "I want more of this," which is exactly what one wants from a sequel.
Literally everything about this book is massively spoilery for the first one, including its premise. I'll do two sets of spoiler cuts, one for the premise and one for the whole book.
( Premise spoilers )
Stop reading here if you don't want to be spoiled for the entire book.

Jan. 27th, 2026 02:38 pmCharacters/Pairings: John Sheppard/Rodney McKay, Ronon Dex, Teyla Emmagan, Anne Teldy, Carson Beckett, Radek Zelenka, Jennifer Keller
Rating: Explicit
Length: 18,013
Content Notes: Graphic depictions of violence. Jeannie, Rodney's sister, has died long before the story starts. Academic ethics are somewhat compromised!
Creator Links: Telesilla on AO3, helens78 on Audiofic Archive
Themes: Crack treated seriously, First time, Friends to lovers, Animal transformation, Werecreatures, Complete AU, Interspecies pairing, Research, Worldbuilding (I had difficulty finding actual tags to reflect some of these because while there's a minor character werewolf in this, most of the Weres aren't wolves.)
Summary: John Sheppard has had over twenty years to come to grips with the fact that every four or five weeks, he turns into a mountain lion. Like most Were, he accepts that that's just the way it is, and so he's not particularly interested when he learns that researchers at the local university are trying to to develop drugs that will help Were control their cycles. Then he meets Dr. Rodney McKay, a brilliant but irascible biochemist with reasons of his own for spearheading the university's Were research and John suddenly finds himself struggling with more than just his attraction to McKay.
Reccer's Notes: Werewolves, or in this case, Werecreatures in general, are a popular crack fantasy trope. This story's excellent as it turns the fantasy trope into a real minority of individuals having Were genes, forced to change cyclically to an animal form. In this story's interesting worldbuilding, Were are discriminated against and find it hard to get jobs and live as full members of society. John is a werecougar and he meets Rodney who's a scientist running a research trial to test a new drug intended to suppress mandatory cycling. The story is crack "taken seriously" as there's no fantasy element. This is a genetically-driven thing, with Were a slightly different species to humans. Their cycles vary according to gene expression, and aren't moon-driven. Plus, in this world, Telesilla shows the politics of discrimination against Were, with John initially resisting the research as he's angry that they're yet again being viewed as humans with a sickness that needs treatment. The story has lots of plot and drama, a great developing relationship with Rodney, and a satisfying conclusion. Very much recommended!

R.I.P. Sal Buscema
Jan. 26th, 2026 08:12 pm
Sal Buscema has passed away. In my opinion he was one of the best 'old school' comicbook artists and his work on Spectacular Spider-Man was a stand-out. I decided to share the ending of #200 which is a classic.

NS: Legendary Marvel Comic Artist Sal Buscema Passes Away at Age 89
Jan. 26th, 2026 07:30 pmhttps://www.cbr.com/legendary-marvel-comic-artist-sal-buscema-passes-away-89/
“Wow. I just received word from Mrs. Joan that Sal Buscema passed away last Friday. He was 89. Today, he would’ve turned 90. When I think back on my childhood and all of the comic books that I read, Sal’s name seems to have appeared in just about all of them. I didn’t just read the books that he illustrated, I studied them.
Every nuance in his pencils and his inks I saw and tried to mimic. He was definitely one of the greats during those years at Marvel, when handling more than three titles a month was not just a requirement but a necessity. Sal’s art had a direct impact on my own, along with his older brother John, Jack Kirby, Gil Kane, John Romita Sr and Ron Frenz.
Ron, God bless him, was the person responsible for Sal and I meeting some time ago and for that I’ll be forever grateful. Sal was a very nice, kind and generous person who I am happy to have known and who took note of my skills enough to mentor me. The wonderful conversations we had will always be cherished.
My condolences to his wife Joan, the Buscema family and to all of us fans who grew up with and love his amazing art. I’ll have more posts later. – SC”

Taking Inventory: JUSTICE LEAGUE EUROPE #14, …AMERICA #41 (JLI 49)
Jan. 26th, 2026 01:10 pm
No, I haven’t lost track of my numbering. These two “inventory stories” were published later on, but they seem set around here in the chronology. The first is the first Keith Giffen-Gerard Jones writing collab, with art by the underrated Linda Medley. Her style wasn’t as attention-getting as the works of Kevin Maguire, Adam Hughes, or even Bart Sears, but her down-to-earth approach syncs with the down-to-earth aspects of Giffen’s plotting. She’d do some more League work and go on to her own indie series, Castle Waiting.
Say, did you know film fans could be just as obsessive and antisocial as comics fans?
( ‘‘I’m so glad I’M normal!,’’ said everyone reading this story. )

Jan. 26th, 2026 03:08 pmCall your senators to oppose ICE funding
Jan. 25th, 2026 08:40 pmWith magnificent advice if your senator is a Republican:
Actually, I’m gonna disagree a smidge with OPs excellent post here.
I ALSO want those of you in red states screaming at your Senators. And I want you to pretend to be a lifelong republican when you do it. Yell about community and what-about-the-children and “this isn’t what I voted for why are spending billions on this when eggs still cost a million dollars” and yell about shooting a mom on the way from school one week and a nurse who treats veterans the next. About kidnapping a little boy right off the school bus and disappearing him across state lines. About ICE harassing police and law abiding citizens. About how they kidnap 3000 with no warrant and almost all of them are citizens. Call ICE agents every variant of “thug” and “lawless” that you can think of. Tell them you saw the videos and know ICE is lying and think you’re all too stupid to notice. Say you don’t want your government smashing peoples windows and carrying people off and saying they don’t need warrants. About gassing a minivan full of kids and an infant in the hospital.
If they tell you it’s fake you tell them your aunt lives here and is seeing it and has given up the Republican Party forever.
Tell them you didn’t want to believe what those Democrats said about Republicans and feel mad and ashamed and betrayed to see this.
Cause even Republicans here are PISSED OFF.
And every Republican elected in MN knows their party is fuuuuucked as far as MN goes. You can see even many of them posting begging for this to be over.
Your job is to put that fear into YOUR Republicans before this comes to your door.
Remember, you can call after hours to leave a message, and you can email if the phone is too much.
Please encourage others to join you.

1. What type of hair do you have? (Thin, Normal, Thick, Frizzy, etc.)
Thick and straight until it grows, then it curls. Mullet!
2. What color is your hair currently?
Sort of brownish with red showing in the sun
3. What colors have you dyed/highlighted your hair?
Never added color because it was my best feature and I was afraid of ruining it.
4. If you could dye your hair any color, what would it be?
Something unnatural, like blue. Maybe if it turns white before I die, I'll try it.
5. What is your hair's length?
So short, short and butch. Should last me to July until I force myself to the cutters.
There are daffodils sending up shoots in the front yard. Yet, every morning there is frost on the ground. Crazy mixed-up daffodils.
I'm putting out seeds for the birds. Mostly small black headed birds, an occasional dove (which I hope don't hang around because I find their cooing so disheartening), a jay or two and an anemic looking robin. And greedy, fat squirrels.
The electrician came again, but I think everything is sorted and I finally understand the furnace (fingers crossed) and I won't use the portable heaters again.

Jan. 25th, 2026 02:17 pmAnother Transformative Approach to Fan Identity
Jan. 25th, 2026 05:51 amAnother Transformative Approach to Fan Identity
When speaking of the possibility of K-pop stans transforming their fannish identity and negotiating their identification with their idols, inherent in the discussion is the racism and cultural appropriation of the industry and fandom that affords different possibilities to Black and non-Black fans. While the difference between South Korean and North Korean fans is how the different structure of fandom means a certain relation between the fannish identity and the object of the fannishness, the discussion about racism and cultural appropriation points out the relation between the the fannish identity and fans’ racialized identities, which no structure of fandom can erase. Otebele uncovers these relations for us.
For many non-Korean or South Korean–based fans of K-pop, distance is a defining factor in their interaction with the industry. For Black fans, this distance is not only physical but also formed by industry practices that contribute to their abjection. (…) The ceremony for such divorce between fandom and racial discourse marks an impossibility for Black K-pop fans who may find that pleasure in the media object rests in the fractured space between fan and antifan.
This impossibility is dissolved in a dream in which fannish identity and racialized identity, fan and anti-fan can be clearly separated. White fans are allowed to express their fascination and frustration as part of their fannishness, while Black fans’ vigil labor, a term coined by Otobele, is seen as placing them outside of this same fannishness.
Here, by speaking back to the K-pop industry and non-Black fans, these creators deploy vigil labor to demonstrate the potentiality of Black fan power in resisting fandom expectations and negotiating the fluid boundaries of being fans. (…) This resistance defies established modes of being a fan, placing critique not only on media objects but also on fandom and, doing so, through its transformative creations.
Otobele here points out that vigil labor actually obscures the boundaries of fan and anti-fan: it is transformative work and critique at the same time. Vigil labor creates value for the fans whose pleasure of fandom is disrupted by racism, the term an important addition to the theory of resistant fandom practices or might even be completely new lens through which we can view this theory.
