Cape Verde is very poor. There are people trying to make money by having there picture taken. One man had his two little boys with him. He was calling me Father Christmas and trying to get me to take their picture. I did so and then gave him a couple of euros. I missed the greatest of shots because of timing and the lighting.

A woman arrived at the market with about 6 dozen eggs in flats on her head but I wasn't in position by the time she took them off. There was lots of fish being sold on the streets. The sellers took up positions in the shade of a building along a street. Actually the fish looked pretty good. I didn't stay long in town. It was very hot and there wasn't a lot to see.

The ship sailed at 6 pm headed for Praia, Cape Verde. We had dinner at the Patio Grill and enjoyed the pleasant night. We shared dinner with a couple from Florida talking about our travels.

West of the city is Mount Cara rising 489 meters (1604 feet) above the Atlantic. Cara means face and it is said that the face of George Washington may be seen in a reclining position formed by the top of the mountain.

We returned to the city and the boat for lunch. I went for a short walk after lunch to take pictures of the monuments and the statues. It was a quick shuttle bus ride into the center of town to see the sights. There was a statue to Diogo Afonso, a navigator, who was the discoverer of the western islands in 1461. And downtown there is a naval museum that is a replica of Belém Tower in Lisbon. I went to a small open air market where I was able to buy a few postcards.

We drove to the top of Monte Verde, the tallest point on the island, 725 meters (2,379 ft), which is covered with communication towers. The road was winding with sharp hairpin turns. At one point we came upon the Cape Verdean military on maneuvers. They were practicing rappelling down the side of this mountain. Most young people must serve but they really don't have enemies nor do they have much an invading army would want. From the top we can see the entire end of the island and the beach we would visit later. One of group had the wind take his hat a blow it to the edge. A tour guide climbed down and retrieved it. He said it was because he was “a good mountain guide.” I attributed it to being a good mountain goat. He had a good laugh about that.

Down the mountain we travel along the north beach and stop for a shot of liqueur made from honey and sugarcane. From there we traveled inland past small farms. There were lots of fences made of rocks. It was sobering to consider that every one of the thousands of rocks were moved by hand. There were a lot of abandon properties and defunct windmills. It is a hard life on the islands. Most of the drinking water is provided by a desalination plant.
