- Pictured is Lyndon B. Johnson before sunset, taken in Sept '21. At 610 ft, the Zumwalt-class destroyers appear on radar the size of a fishing boat. The radar avoiding design is so effective, they use reflectors when not in friendly seas so other ships can pick them up on radar.
- BIW delivered the future USS John Basilone to the Navy today. President Chuck Krugh stated: “Delivery brings DDG 122 one step closer to joining the Navy fleet, where it can fulfill its role protecting our country and our families. Our shipbuilders have put their heart and soul
- Today the future USS Lyndon B. Johnson (DDG 1002), the final Zulmwalt-class destroyer, sailed away from BIW. This incredible milestone was achieved thanks to our shipbuilders, whose determination and expertise helped build the most sophisticated surface combatant ever built.
- Bath-built USS Mason was the last ship launched in Bath on the inclined ways. It was christened by then-Sen. Olympia Snowe in 2001 and when it came time to hammer the wedges to launch the ship, instead of 189 shipbuilders there were about 900 taking turns for the historic event.
- The Navy plans to start building the next generation of destroyer, DDG(X), while the DDG 51s are still under construction, according to a USNI article. Overlapping the 2 programs provides stability for BIW & HII, which build the Navy’s multi-mission ships.
- The future Carl M. Levin (DDG 120) showcased its power and speed during Sea Trials last week, living up to its motto, “Tenacious in the Fight.” #BathBuiltisBestBuilt
00:00 - On this day in 1985, we were awarded the contract to build the first in class, USS Arleigh Burke (DDG 51). DDG 51’s versatility and effectiveness would make it the longest-running Navy shipbuilding program in U.S. history. #BathBuiltisBestBuilt
- We are proud to send this third ship of the Zumwalt class to sea trials today, honoring the father of the ships’ sponsors, Luci Baines Johnson and Lynda Johnson Robb. Lyndon B. Johnson was the 36th president of the US and is DDG 1002’s namesake. @LBJLibrary @LBJFoundation
- Happy St. Patrick’s Day! Currently on Land Level is the future USS Patrick Gallagher (DDG 127). Its namesake, Marine Cpl. Patrick Gallagher, was from County Mayo, Ireland. He was awarded the Navy Cross during the Vietnam War. We're honored to build a ship for this Irish war hero!
- The Irish @Naval_Service ship LÉ James Joyce crew & Irish Vice Consul General Shane Caffrey from Boston visited BIW to lay a wreath on the future USS Patrick Gallagher. They posed for a photo under the stern with BIW President Chuck Krugh & presented shipbuilders with a plaque.
- Last month’s successful sea trials is a great accomplishment launching us into 2021. Check out the future USS Daniel Inouye (DDG 118) getting underway for the first time as it heads out into the North Atlantic. #BathBuiltisBestBuilt
00:00 - USS Oliver Hazard Perry launched at BIW in 1976 and its FFG-7 class was the 1st computer-designed ship, with the initial design done by Raye Montague, the 1st US Navy female program manager. The Navy budgeted a month, but Montague finished the design in 19 hrs. #BlackHistoryMonth
- Fair winds and following seas! Today, the future USS John Basilone (DDG 122) sailed down the Kennebec River for the final time, leaving our shipyard under beautiful sunny skies. Thank you to our dedicated shipbuilders who all played a pivotal part in making this milestone and
