- I love a paper I’m refereeing so much that I’m almost moved to tears writing the report. Just to put positive vibes out in the world:)
- Re: tip 3—contact potential phd supervisors beforehand. Please don’t! Economics programs don’t run on the lab-based model. Is this a European thing? I wish messaging on this were uniform.Just finished reviewing several hundred applications for a very selective PhD program (3% acceptance rate). I’d like to share a few tips on how to write a strong research statement and avoid common mistakes. First, the sad reality: we receive many statements that seem to be

- Say what you want about Econ academia, felt NONE of this when I had first child as a grad student (except in my own head lol). I have seen so much support for mothers in Econ, never seen something like this, thank goodness. Need to counter very bad vibes with good vibes. 👶s 🤘🏻I attended the Shakespeare Association of America conference 8 months pregnant. there, a mentor of mine I hadn’t seen for a while looked me up & down w disgust & said “I’m so disappointed in you” at least three times. academia hates pregnant people & yet we continue to rock it.
