It took me several viewings to understand that Jack hates his wife and family and blames them for his failure as a writer and provider, that is, as a man. Also that this is the scariest thing in this movie (not that the hotel is haunted): he hates and wants to kill his family.

My special technique landed me in the ER with blood gushing out of my ear like in a horror film. The ER doctor took one withering look at me and said “what the hell did you do?” I was employing my special technique and by accident jammed the q tip into the ear canal. I was lucky
