Some ground rules: This account is for playing with ideas with an eye towards the β€œlong view,” ideally focusing on questions which would be of interest even to cultures far removed from ours in time and space. In this narrow sense I don’t want this account to be β€œpolitical”. 1/

this is a fantastic premise. story narrated from the perspective of an AGI trained entirely on pre-192X content, trying make sense of its situation and its identity while having no prior knowledge of the existence of computers beyond adding machines.

this is a really clean example of what it means to imperfectly minimize a self-supervised loss. waldo is a tiny fraction of the pixels in the image, and correctly modeling that there’s supposed to be exactly one of him is one of the lowest-priority things for the network to learn

If you want to drive someone crazy: Ask Midjourney to generate a game of Where's Waldo. It will generate images that LOOK legitimate enough to spend time looking - but do not, in fact, contain Waldo (I think?).

I know my intuitions about greedy optimization in high-dimensional spaces must be really bad, because whenever I see pretty much *any* evolutionary adaptation I’m just utterly unable to imagine how it could have arisen through a series of small individually-beneficial mutations

everyone in the replies is praising this cat but isn’t one of the most celebrated works of English-language literature of all time specifically about how you shouldn’t let your entire life be consumed by fanatical resentment after an uncaring leviathan rips off your leg

5 months into her current incarnation, a car ran over Peggy's back right leg and crushed it beyond repair. 5 and a half years later, her favourite pastime is to sit atop the sofa and growl at every single car that passes.

I like the idea that every one of these emojis denotes a distinct, perhaps as yet undiscovered political disposition towards AI development
