Since most people get this wrong (me included, since I assumed natural integers), it seems fair to say LLMs are thinking normally, and (like humans) would need to be prompted to think carefully/rigorously to catch the other possibility.

First, may he be well. Second, may that be a part of his life, but not his full life. My negativity is re the wording "a life that is simple and good", which I'm not sure can be true if he forever disengages with the wider world, a sign that something yet is wrong.

I thought I wasn't much a jealous person but seeing people 100x my net worth hits me with "I'm so bad at creating value for others". Like what's the point of being nice and helpful to my friends when curating and selling datasets actually is much better for the world. It's not

You're very smart and sensitive so materialism does predict it'd happen to you more too. But yeah I don't argue against non materialists on these experiences because I don't have a better explanation! And because you can sometimes control the thing (I assume)

I hope your friend keeps both a sense of goodwill towards the world and practicality, such that when he has improved his own condition he may turn outwards again. I say this hoping this happens for me too, acknowledging my negativity features fear of my own failure to contribute.
