Super Bowl by the numbers: - nearly half a million people signed up for a new fintech app on @Plaid yesterday 🚀 - 3,000 API requests / sec - 99.99 uptime 📈 Running a reliable platform on a large scale doesn’t just happen without a tremendous amount of work behind the scenes.

I’m more convinced than ever that the hardest part of engineering leadership is balancing shipping (short-term velocity) and technical foundation (long-term velocity). Here are a few things / rules of thumb I think about: (a 🧵)

Under-appreciated frustration of building an API product: feature adoption is much slower than for a UI product like Slack/Instagram. Even for your very satisfied customers. Flip side: retention is much higher. Here’s what I wish I’d known when I joined Plaid four years ago:

After 4 years here, I’ve decided to stay at Plaid (and in SF) to grow the team and continue building the future of fintech. The news though is that I am doubling my team this year. Going to celebrate by tweeting recruiting tips all week. Later today: how to encourage referrals!

It’s difficult for anyone to keep track of where their data is going when they’re using so many apps to manage their finances. Very proud of launching the Plaid Portal to give people easy controls across the entire fintech ecosystem. Give it a try and lmk what you think!
Introducing Plaid Portal. See where you’ve connected your financial accounts. Take control of where you share your financial data. Privacy 🤝Plaid. plaid.com/blog/data-priv…

Plaid CTO here. We’ve worked closely w/ FIs to move towards standards like OAuth & App2App to remove the use of credentials. A vast majority of our traffic is already going through these APIs today and we're working with more and more banks to enable OAuth.

Some Banks using Plaid have already begun to transition to OAuth rather than hand username + password to Plaid.
