Many of these kids will go from their school to a university to study politics, will then go straight into jobs as parliamentary researchers, with perhaps a little stint in a Westminster public affairs agency to earn some money, before eventually being selected as suitable

I’d been tipped off that a BGC-commissioned report was coming a couple of weeks ago, and was expecting an extensive takedown of the SMF, IPPR and Gordon Brown by one of the ‘Big Four’ tax/finance consultancies. So this evening I’ve finally had time to sit down and have a read…

This reminds me of my favourite book as a child — “Rook” by Deborah King, published in 1980. I still have my copy, it is one of my most treasured things. “Rook” tells the story of the bird through the seasons, from Spring and Summer through to “the worst of the winter” and the

I am pleased to have been one of the authors of this important new report on the rise of gaming centres on Britain’s high streets today. Here I am talking about this issue with @MeghantheOwen on the BBC recently. The Government has a strategy for renewing high streets and

Labour has promised to revitalise Britain’s High Streets as part of its push for local economic growth. But do the UK’s gambling rules mean our shopping parades are turning into gambling hotspots? 🎰 @jamiegollings @jranoyes @jake_sheps investigate in our latest report.

Tom is one of the best guys I’ve met in a long time — a real gent, a great professional, and a man brave enough to turn a heartbreaking personal story into something which might hopefully help others. What a beautiful gesture this is.

As some of you may know, I am currently cycling from Africa to @plumptonraces to raise funds for the charity of my sister Charlotte who sadly passed away last year from a rare type of liver cancer at just 22 years old. These food delivery companies are a social and economic blight and should be banned. They have been known to break employment laws, they don’t pay their workers properly or provide proper employment conditions, they do enormous environmental damage by shuttling junk food around

EXCL: Renting a delivery account as an illegal migrant is so easy that I did it in minutes — and dropped off dinners to families. In six hours on shift, in two different places, I was not asked for ID or to verify myself once while working on someone else’s account.

As a Norfolk boy, this is the first time in my life I’ve ever heard of Diss being called “affluent” The outsider commentariat just doesn’t understand the slow drip drip drip of deprivation and hopelessness that spreads throughout so many Norfolk towns. Diss, Swaffham, Fakenham,

In the past 24 hours, there have been demonstrations on the streets of Epping (Essex) and Diss (Norfolk) - both affluent, leafy market towns, not exactly synonymous with revolt or disorder. It is a measure of the general anger over the immigration crisis that places such as

Photographs from Syria taken 19 years ago, almost to the day. In the weeks leading up to Christmas 2005 I was in Damascus conducting research for my PhD on iconoclasm. These photographs were taken at archeological sites in Suwayda, Shahba and Bosra in December 2005. It was during

This is one of my favourite pubs in all of England. It overlooks the vast plain of Herefordshire towards the hills of the Wye and Wales in the distance. Last night I stood for a while on that gravel path next to the tabby cat. There was no one else around, no cars, no chatter,
