Sounds crazy but…I’m thinking about creating a course for OPEN colorectal surgery. With the shift to laparoscopy & robotics over the past 20+ years, the current generation of surgical trainees need to learn how to operate the “old school” way for the most challenging cases…

Called a patient today to tell them their colonoscopy biopsies showed cancer. Patient already knew—got an automated alert earlier in the day and read the results on the online medical record. At home, alone. This new law granting access to test results is a BIG problem.

Donating my plasma after recovering from #COVID19. The patient is a friend and fighting for his life in the ICU. This is not a surgical disease but as a surgeon I am doing whatever I can to save lives. I’m sending antibodies to fight the virus. Please send your prayers 🙏

What is the greatest surgical innovation/invention over the past 100 years? I vote for the Bovie electrocautery. Imagine operating without it…I believe William T. Bovie deserves the @NobelPrize 🏆

I hope patients will understand how understaffed we are in health care due to the mass exodus following COVID and recognize we simply can’t provide the same level of customer service. We will continue to try our best…

What surgeon do you wish you had an opportunity to train under/scrub with? I’ll start: Michael DeBakey What a brilliant, innovative mind combined with relentless grit.

Salary is not the problem. We need a pathway that is not so expensive to become a doctor. It would remove the financial strain and encourage more to go into healthcare. We have a physician, and more specifically and surgeon, shortage.

Top this one: Our @Delta pilot @JohnnyORD flying surgeons from Boston to Seattle for @ASCRS_1 meeting announced his 9-year #colorectalcancer cure. Encouraged passengers to get a #colonoscopy and prevent cancer. I thanked him for his efforts while he thanked us for ours! #CRS23

I had a TeleHealth visit today with a postoperative patient. Today was her 101st Birthday! She was young when she survived the #SpanishFlu pandemic. She is old and plans to survive #COVID pandemic. Her advice: “STAY HOME!” Let’s celebrate her bday by taking her advice!

Controversial topic but can someone explain to me why a surgeon should perform a colectomy robotically? But…you have to justify with the DEFINED and PROVEN benefits for the patient, surgeon, and/or healthcare system. Go!

The OR tech I have worked with for the past 15 years just called me on my cellphone to review instruments and plans for my first surgery today. I feel strongly that you need to have a regular operating room #team to provide the best care. Patients deserve that. #medtwitter

Virtually every time I am called to the operating room to assist or consult on a difficulty surgery the FIRST thing I do is extend the incision. Exposure is key and can facilitate and expedite a successful surgery. Other tips??
