Over twenty unbroken years of service representing the people of Kilkenny, and five as a TD and Minister for Carlow-Kilkenny, has come to an end. While we are deeply disappointed that it hasn't worked out for us, we are immensely proud of everything we achieved over that time.

My last field trip as Minister. The water was calm at first light as we headed out to the black islands on Lough Ree. Recently acquired by the state, the islands are being managed by @BreedingWaders to help revive numbers of our most endangered birds.

I got to see Lorg, the predator detection dog in action. Lorg is playing a vital role in the management of the islands. Conservation grazing will help maintain open habitat for birds once scrub has been cleared.

The abandoned cottages of fishing communities who made a living from freshwater fishing are a poignant time capsule of a bygone time. Míle buíochas to the EIP and NPWS teams for their work to conserve, document and restore these special islands.

A year in Review. It has been a hugely productive 2024 as Minister for nature and heritage. We played a vital role in saving the Nature Restoration Law, I announced a new National Park, closed 🇪🇺 birds case, record funding for nature and heritage.

Importantly too, I travelled the country meeting farmers, visiting projects, out on boats, bogs, round towers, in woodlands, rivers, on scaffolding and out on the sea. I am always encouraged by the passion of people and communities for nature and heritage.

I travelled extensively as Minister for Nature and Heritage but always a treat to be in my home county of #Kilkenny and Knockroe passage tomb for winter #Solstice The sun didn't break through but the promise of brighter days makes it all worthwhile.

🧑‍🌾The NPWS Farm Plan Scheme supports farmers and landowners to conserve and restore nature on their land. The Scheme helped the Daly family to improve the habitat for the rare Lesser Horseshoe Bat.
