That bliss-on-demand is a footnote is so counterintuitive it's almost unbelievable. But jhana meditators go through stages: 1) early exploration, often amazement 2) entering jhana reliably and resetting emotional defaults 3) using jhanas for identity shifts Thoughts on each:

I had to ask @nayafia three times to join us on retreat last year. She expected to leave early. After her first retreat: “I realized I could adjust my mood... it was very practically useful.” After her second: “Geez, what is reality?” Her arc captures the real story of the

There's something about simple rules self-organizing into complex behavior that can make me feel like a secret to the universe is on display right in front of me, but I'm not quite grokking it.

Skin-in-the-game, bigger-than-self purpose I think is an open secret life hack (up there with jhanas and finding a baseline happy life partner). It’s so good that I felt cheated when I (finally) became a founder. I thought “why did everyone tell me this is hard instead of

I wrote & analyzed a 20-person list of anyone I've seen go sustainedly super-saiyan (i.e., anyone who's become radically more capable of creating what they want to see in the world). 18/20 all did the same thing. Can you guess what it was? Hint – it wasn't a: • transformative

When I ran cross country, played high school soccer, and biked 15-25 miles a day to commute to school it was impossible to eat unhealthy. Body was so tuned in I could almost tell if I was iron deficient by how much I craved spinach. It’s not a skill issue. It’s a feedback issue

I think one way to view meditation is it’s a series of exercises aimed at becoming very sensitive. your body will naturally do what makes it feel better. by being sensitive enough to feel the cause of suffering (clinging) directly your body will naturally learn to do it less

2024 was the year jhana meditation began to go mainstream. Over 500 people attended our retreats & the jhanas were covered in outlets from Vox to TIME. 9 lessons we learned laughing (and crying) with students while working to make life-changing meditation accessible. 👇🏼

As jhanas gain a foothold in the overton window, everyone still seems to agree that they exist. The fact that people keep looking into this, & reporting back to millions of readers that the mind can, in fact, learn to dissolve into radiant beams of bliss...this is serious news!

We started Jhourney to make life-changing meditation accessible to everyone. Here’s what happened in 2023, including with the metrics we think matter most. 👇🏼

Jhourney's looking for some volunteers in the Bay Area interested in being our first guinea pigs next week for our earliest attempts at jhana-accelerating biofeedback. Will require ~4 hours. We'll pull out everything we've got to try and teach you the jhanas.

It’s exciting to see the Atlantic do a full story on @jhanatech and the potential for taking jhanas to scale. theatlantic.com/technology/arc…. A year ago, the biggest jhana story might have been Astral Codex Ten comments debating whether or not they’re real! I love to see mainstream

The best thing about going all in on learning something for 3-6 months isn’t building a skill or multiplying income, but the sense of agency from watching the seemingly impossible become possible. My bootcamp experience was the best education experience of my life (also Hack

Recently I was interviewing someone about a recent meditation, and they said “I got a nice feeling.” 10 min later I got suspicious and went back and asked “how nice?” They said, “Oh, by far the most pleasurable thing that’s happened to me in over a year.”

I don’t know why meditation teachers downplay how helpful meditation has been to them. They constantly talk about how meditation doesn’t solve everything, they still suffer etc. But ask them to quantify it and they’re like oh lol my worst day now is 10x better than an old good

At this point, when I hear "woo" I think "alpha?" An under-appreciated "secret" of our time may be that many woo experiences are not exaggerated, they're just poorly understood. There's plenty of noise. But alpha always comes with noise. That's what reverse engineering,

The ur-woo belief is that mental states impact reality directly, and while I’ve come to believe that’s true it’s also a dangerous belief. The more woo stuff I engage with, the more important I find it is to stay grounded in my direct experience and careful about my inferences.

After dozens of hours of interviewing jhana meditators, we've got a list of experimental ideas for teaching the jhanas quickly. Want to experiment with us? We're hosting a retreat next weekend at the Alembic (July 29th and 30th) to see what we might discover together.

I might be unusually slow, but I've found a lot of nondual pointers insufficiently specific ("just look!") or seemingly with legitimate answers without any effect ("who/what am I?" always points to loosely in my head). But I finally have one that's dropped me into a warmish
