If you decide to follow me because I like OpenBSD or write tips about vi, be warned:

I believe:
-CoCs are good
-LGBTQA folks are awesome and deserve rights just like any of us
-Women and minorities have been screwed in tech and we need to fix it
-Nazis deserve punching
-As a white dude, if you/I get called out on something we did, the best response is to apologize and stop talking
-Meritocracies aren't

If you take issue with any of these statements, this place is not for you.

Stopping git naming the first branch "master":

reducto$ git config --global init.templateDir ~/.config/git/template
reducto$ mkdir -p ~/.config/git/template
reducto$ echo "ref: refs/heads/main" > ~/.config/git/template/HEAD
reducto$ mkdir newRepo
reducto$ cd newRepo/
reducto$ git init
Reinitialized existing Git repository in /home/kurt/newRepo/.git/
reducto$ git status
On branch main

vi tips - Exiting vi

First, just hit the Escape key for good measure before any of these. If you are in an insert mode it will exit it, and if you're not it doesn't hurt (except for maybe making a beep).

:q
-Quit, unless I changed the file

:q!
- Quit. Now. Discard any changes.

:x
-Write the file if it changed, and then quit

ZZ
-Write the file if it changed, and then quit

:wq
-Write the file and then quit

(Feels wrong to capitalize vi, but trying to help screen readers)

I think it's about time for some :flan_hacker: :flan_cool:

Clang/LLVM 22 is now OpenBSD's base compiler on clang architectures, including updated libc++{,abi}, compiler-rt & libunwind support libraries.

bsd.network/@brynet/1166580624

OpenBSD/sparc64 switches to Clang by default! This was the last significant architecture to switch. This makes OpenBSD the only operating system to support sparc64 with a modern toolchain.

Since 7.9, Jonathan Gray (jsg@) has continued to update the drm graphics stack (inteldrm/radeondrm/amdgpu) bringing OpenBSD 8.0 to Linux 6.18.y/6.18.53, adding driver support for Intel Arc A-Series (DG2/Alchemist) cards.

Increased KVA (kernel virtual addresses) on amd64 (to 512G) now allows mapping more than 4G of VRAM (for example, GPU compute w/ Vulkan)

After a ton of work in Edmonton by Mike Larkin (mlarkin@) and Dave Voutila (dv@), OpenBSD vmm/vmd(8) now supports SMP guests up to 64 VCPUs per VM! :flan_cool: 🎉

OpenBSD 8.0 adds qwz(4), new WiFi driver for Qualcomm WCN7850 "ath12k" devices.

A new driver, sambat(4), for monitoring battery status, cycle count/charge info on Samsung Galaxy Book4 Edge (Snapdragon arm64) machines.

bsd.network/@brynet/1166006745

Accelerated swap encryption on amd64 and arm64 by using AES CPU instructions.

bsd.network/@brynet/1170908422

OpenBSD/arm64 and OpenBSD/riscv64 boards can now heartbeat blinking LEDs to show system load averages.

httpd(8) now supports many new features:

  • Setting custom HTTP response headers.
  • New blocking/filtering rules based on received HTTP headers (e.g: User-Agent: )

weird dream fragments

Just remembered some dream snippets from this morning. Some grocery store had killer robots looking for myself and others who knew about the toxic goop that also powered their killer robots.

They had non-killer robots that seemed sinister but didn't take hostile action.

I want to say the grocery store was Stop & Shop. A grocery chain I've lived far from for... 30 years now?

I really have to give Apple credit for one thing. They somehow made "RAM is shared between CPU and GPU" a _positive_ _benefit_. :flan_confused:

Adventures in subreddit moderation

"My microphone doesn't record anything."
"Did you set sysctl kern.audio.record=1?"
"Yes and on a call they can hear me but I can't hear them."
"That's not a microphone problem then"
"Right and I have not a clue what it could be."

:flan_facepalm:

Back in Computer Science House at RIT[1] I knew someone who _was_ talented, but more importantly, he was stubborn and patient: Frank Barrus.

CSH had acquited all these Kodak KIMS Stations that were diskless vaxstations with amazing greyscale monitors[2] and documentation for the QDSS[3] 2-bit greyscale graphics boards.

The documentation was innacurate. The "Advanced Research Group" had worked for months and couldn't get them working with anything. Digital wouldn't acknowledge these boards they made for Kodak even existed.

Frank Barrus got one and locked himself in his room for the weekend and by the end had a wireframe enterprise-D rotating on the screen. He also wrote a basic serial terminal program for the ROM.

He searched through the rom until he found the bitmapped fonts. Then he searched through the ROM for the places that addressed that part of the ROM. And kept going from there.

Stubborn wins over talent.

[1] RIT is an evil place that some good things happened at in spite of it.
[2] Like 27" CRTs with the most clear dot pitch.
[3] miod.online.fr/software/openbs - Alright, not the same machine, but references QDSS

Just saw on a random tiktok collection of posts "You're not talented, you're stubborn, and stubborn wins more often."

Yes. Yes it does.

Firefox: "We are the last bastion for user choice!"

Firefox: "Except that. You can't choose that."

Firefox: "Why did you make our browser ugly? We're overriding you."

@kurtm Worth noting that the pref that you mention is likely to be removed in the future.

If you are also a casualty in the newest battle of firefox's war on their users:

You can disable the new awful rounded tabs by going into about:config, searching for nova, Change browser.nova.enable to false.

Also, you'll need to re-enable your old theme. Firefox "helpfully" disabled my dark theme.

I just want to point out that the MAGANazi party tried the culture war bullshit with Zohran Mamdani. They tried, and it failed.

They tried the socialism thing. He waved it away by leaning harder into workers rights.

They tried the trans thing. He waved it away by leaning harder into trans rights.

They tried the immigration thing. He waved it away by leaning harder into immigrant rights.

The lesson here for Centrist Democrats is simple. You don't fight Nazis by giving up ground to the Nazis. You fight Nazis by leaning harder into the wind and standing up for individual rights.

@kurtm roughly
a couple = 2
a few = 3 (possibly 3-5)
some ~5
several = 1313
many = 10 or more

lwn.net/Articles/1097401/

"Several vulnerabilities have been discovered in the Linux kernel that
may lead to a privilege escalation, denial of service or information
leaks."

1313

I don't think they know what "several" means.

"OpenZFS Mastery: Flerb Edition."

In which I take advantage of my position to give everything proper and distinct names, rather than reusing the same six words for everything.

I got my working again!

My replacement EEPROM for the original four 8316Es works, and my board requires no changes to the mainboard (no W2/W3).

Super happy!

What is a flerb? It's like a lightweight virtual machine. FreeBSD jails and other containers are examples of flerbs.
