Does your blood run cold when you hear about openEHR? Do archetypes give you goosebumps?

Overcome your fears with this article and master OpenEHR using the capabilities of InterSystems IRIS for Health!

Image

What is openEHR?

openEHR is an open, vendor-neutral specification designed to represent, store, and exchange clinical information in a semantically rich and long-term sustainable way. Instead of defining fixed message structures (as many interoperability standards do) OpenEHR separates clinical knowledge from technical implementation through a multi-layered modelling approach.

Hi community,

The aim of this article is to explain how to create messaging between IRIS and Microsoft Teams.

In my company, we wanted to monitor error messages, and we used the Ens.Alert class to redirect those error messages through a Business Operation that sent an email.
The problem was that we sent those error messages to a support account where there were many emails. We wanted something specific for a specific team.

So we investigated how to make these messages reach the development team directly and they could have, in real time, a notification of an error in our production.
In our company we use Microsoft Teams as a corporate tool, so we asked ourselves: How could we make these messages reach the IRIS development team?

Hi folks!

Our community is growing rapidly, and the knowledge base is incredibly vast. Whether you're a newbie and unsure where to start, or a seasoned IRIS professional who occasionally forgets a few basic rules (it's normal and happens to everyone!), you may find this brief overview of IRIS basics useful.

In this series, I'd like to share the best learning materials I came across over many years of working with IRIS. I hope you'll find something useful here, no matter your level of experience. Over the series, I plan to cover eight main topics in total:

  1. InterSystems ObjectScript
  2. Build with REST APIs
  3. Managing Data Models
  4. Explore Integrated ML
  5. Interoperability & Integrations
  6. Introduction to IRIS HealthShare products
  7. Analytics & Business Intelligence
  8. Deployment & DevOps

Each of them will touch upon four key parts: Courses, Community articles, Documentation, and Applications.

In this article, I focus on InterSystems ObjectScript.

Amazon SQS (Simple Queue Service) is a managed message queue service that provides a simple, durable, and scalable mechanism for exchanging messages between applications. It is particularly well suited for event-driven integration patterns and loosely coupled architectures.

Bear in mind that the AWS SQS adapter is based on InterSystems PEX Network and requires the Java External Server to be enabled.

When using Amazon SQS you can either take the role of a Consumer or a Publisher.

Intro

If you ever wondered how to debug some requests that are being made to or from IRIS, well here is a little tutorial on how to do that.

During a complex project, usually you get the specifications and implement the communication between IRIS and other things based on that. But from the paper to the real world there's usually a huge gap and you need to know why you are receiving an error on a parameter, on a header, you are not receiving the data and so on.

The recently published tutorial "Introduction to InterSystems Data Studio" inspired me to check out this product. And I think it’s an interesting look at how to manage a data fabric without deep-diving into complex code. It allows you to connect disparate data silos, transform the data through automated pipelines, and load it into a unified environment for analysis. So, I decided to write up an example of how you can use it. Basically, I'll walk you through the tutorial in case you don't have time to do it on your own. Though I would definitely suggest you actually follow the tutorial - it has lots of useful information.

To see how it works, I stepped into the shoes of a system administrator, logging in with the provided credentials to explore the interface. The layout centers on a few core pillars: defining where data comes from, cataloging its structure, and building automated "recipes" to move it into production.

And the very first step is to establish a connection to my data.

Table Partitioning Demo

This demo walks you through the new Table Partitioning feature in IRIS SQL, explaining what it does and how it works along the way. We'll only use a few dozen rows to prove the concept, but obviously the capability is focused on datasets many orders of magnitude larger.

If you'd like a shorter, higher-level introduction to Table Partitioning, check out the online learning module Managing Tables with Partitioning in InterSystems IRIS

ℹ️ Table Partitioning is included in IRIS 2026.1 as an experimental feature

I may have mentioned this before: I believe the Visual Traces, these sequence diagrams with full content of each step, are a fantastic feature of the IRIS Data platform! Detailed information about how the API works internally, as a visual trace, can be very useful for projects on the IRIS platform. Of course, this applies when we are not developing a high-load solution, in which case we simply don't have time for saving/reading messages. For all other cases, welcome to this tutorial!

What is Unstructured Data?
Unstructured data refers to information lacking a predefined data model or organization. In contrast to structured data found in databases with clear structures (e.g., tables and fields), unstructured data lacks a fixed schema. This type of data includes text, images, videos, audio files, social media posts, emails, and more.

Why Are Insights from Unstructured Data Important?
According to an IDC (International Data Corporation) report, 80% of worldwide data is projected to be unstructured by 2025, posing a significant concern for 95% of businesses.

One objective of vectorization is to render unstructured text more machine-usable. Vector embeddings accomplish this by encoding the semantics of text as high-dimensional numeric vectors, which can be employed by advanced search algorithms (normally an approximate nearest neighbor algorithm like Hierarchical Navigable Small World). This not only improves our ability to interact with unstructured text programmatically but makes it searchable by context and by meaning beyond what is captured literally by keyword.

In this article I will walk through a simple vector search implementation that Kwabena Ayim-Aboagye and I fleshed out using embedded python in InterSystems IRIS for Health. I'll also dive a bit into how to use embedded python and dynamic SQL generally, and how to take advantage of vector search features offered natively through IRIS.

Introduction

Earlier this year, I set about creating kit to introduce young techy folk at a Health Tech hackathon to using InterSystems IRIS for health, particularly focusing on using FHIR and vector search.

I wanted to publish this to the developer community because the tutorials included in the kit make a great introduction to using FHIR and to building a basic RAG system in IRIS.

Project Overview / Introduction

Developing and testing REST APIs in InterSystems IRIS often requires a significant amount of boilerplate code. While ObjectScript provides powerful tools for building APIs, writing consistent and repeatable tests can be time‑consuming. This is where IrisOASTestGen comes in.

IrisOASTestGen is a utility designed to generate the structure of test classes and the supporting utility code directly from an OpenAPI 2.0 specification

In today’s healthcare data landscape, FHIR has become the standard for structured clinical data exchange. However, while FHIR excels at interoperability, its JSON format makes analytics challenging—including FHIR QuestionnaireResponse.

This project demonstrates how to transform FHIR QuestionnaireResponse data from nested JSON into relational SQL tables and vector embeddings. By integrating the InterSystems IRIS FHIR SQL Builder and Vector Search, we unlock the semantic meaning behind patient answers.

When I started my journey with InterSystems IRIS, especially in Interoperability, one of the initial and common questions I had was: how can I run something on an interval or schedule? In this topic, I want to share two simple classes that address this issue. I'm surprised that some similar classes are not located somewhere in EnsLib. Or maybe I didn't search well? Anyway, this topic is not meant to be complex work, just a couple of snippets for beginners.

How I fixed it for myself?

Root cause

  • The SQL Server DSN was set to Windows Integrated Authentication.
  • IRIS opens the ODBC connection via irisdb.exe, which runs under the IRIS Windows services’ logon account.
  • My IRIS services were running as LocalSystem, so SQL saw the machine account <ORGNAME>\<ASSETID>$
