mxcatmoon: Miami Vice Rico white hat (MV: Rico 2)
[personal profile] mxcatmoon

The internet is worthless these days, except for mindless entertainment (nothing wrong with that, as long as you realize it). I remember when a search engine gave me an answer I knew was a lie, so I told it it was lying. It immediately said the opposite of what it did the first time.

Here's another example. Try to find out what color eyes an actor really has. In this case, I use Don Johnson and Philip Michael Thomas. Well, every website says something different. Green, blue, hazel -- some even say red and black! They just make up shit. That they both have green eyes seems to be a popular take, but going from how rare green eyes are... I find it hard to believe that, coincidentally, both stars of a series would have green eyes.

Height is another hysterical one. PMT is anywhere from 5'7 to 6'6!! Each website says something different. Same for Don. Maybe they just can't do the math conversions? šŸ˜šŸ˜‚šŸ¤£ Now, I do know neither of them is especially tall (which I love). I'm willing to believe Wiki.

And have a vid I just found. OMG. I have a head-canon that Sonny immediately drops his pants when Rico starts singing this. I know I want to! šŸ˜‰ PMT really does have a beautiful voice. The video is a bit dumb too, but it's pretty.

Milestone! I've finally recovered enough from my big abdominal incision five months ago that the cat can knead my stomach again.

I'm home sick today with a cold (negative flu and covid tests) and it's reminding me what good chronic pain flare company he used to be. I'd wake up from pain naps to find him curled into my side to share the warmth of my heating pad. All of which is to say that someone's earned himself a go with his treat puzzle. Or will, once he gets bored of purring in my lap.

I wrote two works for [personal profile] candyheartsex!

During the anon period, there was a tumblr post going around about how you should follow your heart and write fic for that 300-year-old novel! Write fic for that 70-year-old movie! And I had to laugh, because...

Renewed Liaison for [archiveofourown.org profile] parnassus
Les liaisons dangereuses | Dangerous Liaisons - Choderlos de Laclos
Marquise de Merteuil/Vicomte de Valmont
Canon Divergence, Fix-it, Parley

I sue for two items only: peace, and a renewal of the true amity that once existed between us.

This was a pinch-hit I picked up early. I've long hated the resolution of the novel, where Merteuil is cast low while Valmont is nearly valorized in death. (God forbid a woman be evil!!) So I wrote a new ending for them, one that is more symmetric in consequence, leaving them both war-ravaged, but with a path to become allies again.

Will they ride again, leaving ruin behind them? We can only hope. ;-)

There My Heart Forever Lies for [archiveofourown.org profile] Luzula
The Flight of the Heron
Ewen/Keith, Ewen/Alison, Keith & Francis
Brigadoon AU

After Culloden, word reaches the British garrison that Ewen Cameron is skulking at Ardroy. As a test of his loyalty, Keith Windham is sent with a company of men to arrest him. Keith goes, but is determined to protect Ewen however he can.

Ewen, however, has been granted a miracle: for Ardroy and all its people to vanish into the Highland mist, reappearing only one day in a century. Life will go on just as before, no longer touched by wars, armies, or time…

So, last year I watched the Gene Kelly version of the musical Brigadoon, which for those who don't know, is about a Highland village that gets snatched out of time in the mid-eighteenth century, only returning to Earth for one day every hundred years.

And on hearing this, I was like, "Oh, that was obviously to protect the village from the fallout of the '45..." And then it turned out the whole backstory for the miracle was to protect the village from witches. Witches!

And I thought "Well, that's stupid. Obviously a fix-it is required!" Quickly followed by, "You know, I have a handy '45 fandom right here..." And "Not only do I have a handy '45 fandom, there is an EMPTY SPOT ON THE MAP where Ardroy should be... just as if Ardroy had once upon a time been snatched away into the clouds!"

So I wrote a couple thousand words right then, wrote a couple thousand more while I was in Japan, and... then got inextricably tangled up in plot difficulties and let the whole thing languish, neglected.

But then I got assigned to [personal profile] luzula in [personal profile] candyheartsex! Luzula likes AUs that have a supernatural element, and she's actually been to that empty glen where Ardroy should be, and it was all too perfect an opportunity to pass up. So on a weekend visit to my mom, I spent the entire four-hour drive blocking out my proposed plot to [personal profile] grrlpup, and satisfied that it was doable if I wrote fast, I wrote some 2K words that day. And then... kept doing that.

So. Um. Is this an absurdly long story for an exchange with a 300-word minimum? Yes. Sorry. (I hope I didn't cut too much into your free time last week, Luzula!) But it was a beautiful excuse to finish a story that might not have gotten finished otherwise, and the oppty to gift it to someone who has actually seen that empty glen.

Anyway, 16.7K, eventual happy ending, and no knowledge whatsoever of the musical is required.

So in fact it was only a 250-year-old novel and a 70-year-old movie, but still pretty close to the mark!

Heated Rivalry is one of the most talked about recent shows of the past year. Are there lessons to be learned in how a story can draw in different demographics who wouldn’t normally have been interested in certain genres? Or as the article notes: ā€œIt turns policy into something you can explain to a child, not because you’re trying to teach them politics, but because you are invested in sharing the joy of the characters.ā€

And I'm getting paid for every last one of them, including the 6 hours when the house slept and so did I. Normally, we're not actually supposed to sleep on an overnight shift - but almost everybody really does, so it's more like "don't get caught" - but c'mon.

For everybody at home, leaving without a replacement is not simply a fireable offense but an actual, factual crime. Also, I'm not sure how I would've gotten to the bus. I mean, it's right outside the door, and buses were running all night, but man, it was brutal out there. We needed a little shoveling, and neither I nor manager wanted to shovel, so we had to wait for the neighbors to get their sidewalks and then sorta patch us into theirs. (The transportation issue is also why I'm not blaming any coworkers who didn't come in. It was impossible. I genuinely don't think that this was a fixable issue, Staten Island got a lot of snow.)

In retrospect, what probably ought to have been done would have had to have been done in advance:

1. Manager should've taken as much discretionary money as possible, agreed to let staff order Chinese or whatever for two, three meals - something that reheats nicely - and offered to pay all our carfare home in advance, and then used that to straight up bribe at least one extra staff member to stay over the storm. With three of us, we could've had one on each floor and also could've more easily arranged sleeping shifts so somebody was awake at all times.

2. She also should've called up the families of those residents who frequently go home for an overnight and asked if they'd take their relatives from Sunday afternoon until Tuesday afternoon or Wednesday morning. That's suboptimal for a lot of reasons - there's a reason they all live in a residence instead of with their families! - but it would've lightened the burden on us significantly if we'd had even just our two or three easiest residents away visiting their sisters and brothers.

But we all survived! My replacement actually showed up at midnight last night! But she declined to wake me on the grounds that I wasn't going home at midnight, and she was quite right. And then another staff member showed up this morning, and 90 or 100 minutes later my bus finally showed up. (And yes, I do insist on getting paid for that last hour and a half as well. I wasn't just sitting around, I was doing laundry, and supervising on the basement so that everybody else could handle the upper floors, and walking the guys out to their van so nobody slipped on ice.)

I'm home now, I showered, and I have the rest of the week off, off, off. Yay me!

If this happens again, I'm bringing a change of clothing.

Name Change Feels

gremdark: Neal Caffrey from White Collar making a joking face. (Neal jovial)

I'm bracing myself to start the legal process of changing my name next month, which means I need to finally decide what I want it to be. The first and middle names are sorted, and in fact I've used them socially and professionally for my entire adult life. The last name(s) are the issue.

I've written under my mother's maiden name for a while. That side of the family is very tight-knit, with a well documented history that means the world to me. I am generally closer with them. Firstname Maidenname would make sense.

I do not often speak to my father, and his last name is common enough in the United States that it, paired with my similarly-common legal first name, has given me major issues over the years. (Imagine trying to get anything done when your name is John Smith and there are 4300 other John Smiths in every database, some of whom share your exact birthday down to the year. It's a nightmare.) That being said, my father's name is also his father's name, and my grandfather and I are very close.

When my grandfather was a small child, he was forcibly taken into foster care, and records indicate his mother was institutionalized at that time. We do not know his original surname, or indeed if he had a surname prior to being placed in the 1940s foster care system. We know that ours was government-assigned, a common practice at the time where indigenous foster kids were concerned. He has never been able to locate sufficient records to find members of his birth family.

So my last name has always been complicated for me.

On one hand, I think having a less-common surname would make many of my lifelong database issues disappear. On the other hand, I have decidedly mixed feelings about severing a tie to what my grandfather refers to as his "family stump." On the other other hand, I have no other strong emotional connections to the name, and I'd love to gain my mother's maiden name.''

I'm tempted to just have two last names, with or without a hyphen. But the internet says that sometimes creates logistical database issues of the very kind I hope to escape. So here I sit, weighing my options for the millionth time. It's certainly a quagmire.
