When I'm asked why OpenBSD is good and that I want to reply honestly, I have no argument.

From a technical point of view, I can't tell any strong benefits using OpenBSD, NetBSD or FreeBSD over Linux, although this doesn't mean they are bad.

It would be easy for me to be "cargo-culting" facts, being a "fanboy" or enumerating features that are exclusive to one (and they are rare, except if you are looking for the very very same feature!).

The truth is that what one OS will do better than an other, it will also do worse in another area.

It's important that we keep the BSD systems as relevant Linux alternatives: for software diversity, innovation and freedom of choice.

The terms nowadays that would fit would be or , but it would be reductive to limit my services to these buzzwords in my opinion.

Please, boycott Google's email service Gmail. Here is why you should do so:

They are considering almost all small email servers as spam, this mean Google users have to look in their spam folder when they receive email from someone considered small. This kills freedom.

On top of that, gmail addresses are the biggest source of spam around nowadays, isn't it sarcastic?

There are a few good email provider around that are free, some other are paid but really cheap. If something is free, you should ask yourself how they make money.

Lot of fun tonight! short wave listening after I moved to a elevated and isolated place for a better signal reception.

The (3 wheels bike) is awesome for this because I was able to use my laptop while sitting comfortably in my seat, water at hand.

I did meet NOBODY while staying at this place for 2 hours :D

I have been able to record radios in the 15, 12 and 10 meters bands and also in the 70cm band using a on Skywave distro (work out of the box)

Pour ceux qui iraient dans une boulangerie Ange, il y a une affiche "Plaisir éternel", ici c'est écrit 3 chocolatines achetées, 1 offerte.

Je me demande s'il existe une version de l'affiche avec des pains au chocolat ?

openports.pl is back online :flan_sf:

There was a weird issue on the system, upgrades stopped working automatically due to a lot of .core files that filled the disk

Then, once I fixed this, there was a discrepancy between system perl and packages perl, I tried to rebuild things locally but gave up 😅

and it didn't repair itself with auto upgrades as I removed a package during my attempt at fixing by creating the packages locally :flan_hacker:

I've done similarly for @solene's #OldComputerChallenge running on old underpowered (by today's standards, but mindblowingly powerful several decades ago) hardware.

@TheBird

I packaged an open source software using snapcraft, it was a good experience actually :flan_thumbs:

Any recommandation for a GUI client running offline that could help me preparing a road trip?

I need to set some POI on it and routes. I don't need this right now, but I'm preparing a long road trip and I need to figure where I want to go, then which route between the POI, hence the need to have this in multi-layers.

No idea if such software exists, I hope the answer is not QGis :flan_XD:

@solene It's good to read someone writing about distros and the ecosystem without prosyletising or being a bit cultish. Nobody should make choide of distro, desktop, or init system their identity.
Solène :flan_hacker: boosted

@nuintari There's no support for ZFS for a number of reasons, technical and cultural.

  • CDDL isn't compatible with OpenBSD's copyright policy.

  • OpenBSD has no loadable kernel modules, so it would mean including ZFS in the GENERIC kernel..

  • ZFS is not just a filesystem, it includes a volume manager and sizable chunk of Solaris code into the BSD kernel.

Naturally there's some aversion to doing that. But more importantly, there's a lack of developers interested in porting filesystems. It's a massive project to take on.. and not one likely to ever be suitable for inclusion into base.

I had the chance to ride a gen2 Hayabusa yesterday 🚀

The riding position was incredible, and it was surprisingly comfortable! :goose_helm:

It was not a recent one, it had 78000 km and it looked brand new :flan_ooh: it sounded nice with its 2 akrapović exhausts. I've been very cautious riding this by the way!

I want one now, it was so comfortable and fun :flan_stars:

Today I had the opportunity to ride a Kawasaki Ninja 1100 SX

It was a real blast, I never rode anything like this. It was so smooth, so subtle and yet it was powerful :flan_aww:

Shifting gear was super smooth, the engine was not loud which was surprising, I was able to ride in a city in 6th gear at 1500 rpm and it was still ready to accelerate without having to downshift.
