I just came back from this recital by Yuja Wang. I'm a little disappointed by her performance.

She played mostly Schubert and Scriabin. The Schubert was good enough for me, the Scriabin - not really. Her pianissimo was quite a bit murmuring and muddled. This was okay for Schubert, but in this way a lot of Scriabin's details were completely lost, especially in faster passages where I had an impression that she played a lot of difficult stuff in a fast pianissimo to make it easier, and the result was that you could distinguish almost no notes. For this reason, her performance of Scriabin's 9th sonata was, most probably, incomprehensible to first listeners.

Her interpretation of Balakirev's Islamey was not great for the same reason. Anything that requires a lot of distinct, solid and fast forte seems to be a problem for her.

There will be another concert next week, completely devoted to Scriabin's music, on the occasion of the 100th anniversary of the composer's death. I'll see if I can still get tickets, although I don't really expect Ohlsson to deliver a lot.
