Initial & basic social education
Puppies
Puppies
The experiences and learning a puppy goes through in the first months of life have a profound impact on their behaviour in adulthood. For this reason, it is essential to begin communication, relationship-building, socialisation and education with your new companion in a conscious, consistent and positive way.
Early education and basic social skills sessions are always tailored to each puppy, respecting their personality, pace and family context.
However, there are key foundations (outlined below) that I like to address and apply with most puppies, in order to promote balanced development and harmonious living.
Socialize and accustom the puppy to new environments, people, dogs, objects, sounds, floors, handling for veterinary and hygiene care.
Implementation of routines and techniques in the dog's learning to go potty 'in the right place'.
With environmental management and behavioural modification techniques I help the guardian manage and improve the normal behaviours of a dog, such as "nipping" (bite inhibition), bark, dig, chew, jump, among others.
Since dogs are social animals, it is not natural for them to be alone and confined at home.
Teaching your dog to feel calm and comfortable alone is the first step in preventing problems related to being home alone.
One of the simplest ways to start developing bonds with your dog is to do activities together, one of them is training.
They will learn basic signs such as sitting, laying down, going to the 'bed' to relax, recall and knowing how to walk with a lead (among others).
At this stage cognitive skills are developing, and activities that provide mental stimulation and play will help your puppy in solving problems and also in his memory.
My plan implements routines that provide physical and mental stimulation appropriate to each age, condition and breed, in addition, helps to prevent unwanted behaviours, such as destructive behaviours, anxiety and frustration.
Sessions and support can be provided in Portuguese or English, either online or at home (Cascais, Oeiras and outskirts of Sintra).
Each session is personalised and tailored to the individual needs of each puppy and family.
We begin with an Initial Assessment session, during which the entire learning process and the behaviours in question are discussed.
Family and environmental interactions are also assessed, and the guardian’s goals are clearly defined.
During this session, I will provide practical recommendations for better day-to-day management and demonstrate key exercises to implement.
In the follow-up sessions, the signals (cues) and exercises introduced during the Initial Assessment are taught and developed further, supporting the puppy’s ongoing socialisation and learning process.
In addition to the necessary demonstrations, the guardian is guided step by step through the recommended exercises, gaining the knowledge and confidence needed to apply the strategies independently in everyday life.
Follow-up sessions are usually scheduled every 1 to 2 weeks, allowing time for the family to adapt to the new recommendations and the agreed educational plan.
