1. Do you like soup?

I do!

2. What is your favorite soup?

I'm especially fond of herbal soups, clear soups, and sipping broths. Anything with lemongrass is a sure hit.

3. What kind of soup would you like to try, but never have?

Lettuce soup. I saw a recipe on a raw blog years ago, but every time I attempted it, I'd add more ingredients and end up with a full-on blended salad, lol.

4. Is stew just a soup with extra ingredients?

How dare you. (Just kidding. I have no yoshi in this race.)

5. If you were a soup, what soup would you be and why?

Well, I don't have much protein on my frame, so it'd have to be a bone broth. Wait, why am I being made into a soup? This is purely hypothetical, right?

On time this week, [community profile] thefridayfive for 18 October 2024

1. What's a song you'd enjoy screaming along to as you drove down the highway?

I... wouldn't? I genuinely don't enjoy screaming, driving, or highways. Vibing to Talking Heads' "This Must Be the Place" or The Postal Service's "Such Great Heights" in the passenger seat on a late-night cruise through the city is much more my pace.

2. What is your favorite place/type of environment to relax?

I feel most at ease in quiet places. Years ago, I could relax in NY coffee shops, museums, bookstores, libraries, and parks. Now I prefer being alone at home.

3. What are the best kind of dreams?

Vivid, fantastical dreams that follow a story or immerse me in a different world. They inspire me creatively.

4. What do you look for in a mate?

Empathy, creativity, and depth. Someone I can message out of the blue with a random question and receive a thoughtful answer.

5. If you were a crayon color, what color would you be and why?

I'm probably one of the crayons that melted a little onto the nearby crayons so that we all carry flecks of each other's colors. (That, and I don't remember any crayon colors except cerulean. The word fascinated me as a kid and I wanted to learn how to pronounce it.)

A touch late, but look at me, getting back into the game. :')

1. If you could live in any city in the world, where would you live and why?

I don't know if I've met the right place for me, but I'd love to try living in Sapporo or one of the major Nordic cities. My heart is full of winter, snow, cold. I'd be thrilled to spend half the year bundled up in sweaters and darkness.

2. If you could speak any language fluently, what would it be?

So, some years ago, a friend asked me if I would rather be able to fluently speak every language ever created or be able to instinctively play any instrument I picked up. I answered language at the time, because I long for rich conversations with people from all walks of life, and I would love nothing more than to be able to read any book in the world. But if I could only choose one language to become fluent in, it has to be music! It has a way of reaching deep down into you, even if you can't understand the lyrics, even if there aren't any lyrics.

3. When was the last time you rode a ferry and where did you go?

Waaaay back in 2017, I took the ferry from Nagoya to Tsu and back.

4. What was the longest plane ride you've ever taken?

Nonstop? 14-15 hours. I can't remember if it took longer going to Japan or returning to the United States. I know the return flight felt longer because I was extremely ill and the American airline couldn't accommodate my dietary restrictions. x__x

5. If you discovered a country, what would you name it?

You know, I don't think I would. I like the idea of a nameless, wild place.

I don't know why today is the day—I signed up for this site last November, practically the moment I learned about it—but, hey! I'm blogging again. It's only been a decade or so. :') I'm still unsteady opening myself up after a lengthy, semi-conscious effort to cut every tie I could find, so entries will likely end up locked to the public. For now, I feel safe cracking a window with [community profile] thefridayfive.

The Friday Five for 12 May 2023

1. What was the first album you ever bought?
I'm sure cassettes were bought for me growing up, but the first album I remember walking into a store and picking out for myself is Fugees' The Score.

2. What format was it? (cassette, CD, other?)
CD

3. How old were you?
8 or 9

4. Where did you hear it?
This was the '90s, so I can only assume the radio, MTV, or VH1.

5. Did your parents approve?
Look, "Ready or Not" is a jam; I don't think my parents could have disputed that. I do know they worried about how I would be treated as my budding sense of self deviated from cultural norms, but they rarely dissuaded me from spending my allowance as I liked. They were probably just glad I wasn't throwing money at the pet store for another hamster. (At one point, I had a basketball team's worth of hamsters—yes, named after each player.)
