.history.

Mark has hazy, fogged-over memories of his parents, a pair of people with calluses on their hands and smiles on their faces, but not much that he can recall unless he really strains himself. He actually doesn't recall their funeral, their death, anything related to that farming accident that changed his life along with his siblings'. He suspects that he's blocked the memories; he's read about that in books before.

The accident led Ella, who was then 16, to take him and Annie elsewhere, looking for a home and a place to work. Mark remembers Ella as his mother figure through most of his life, and she remains as such today, a bit to Mark's dismay. Ella sold the farm, moved the small family to Harcha, and set up a bar/inn that the family was to take care of -- mostly Ella, at the time. But Mark was nevertheless put to work, bussing tables, cleaning the dining room, counting money. The life Ella had brought them to was hard -- surely not as hard as it would have been for the three of them to try and run a farm, but hard all the same, and busy to boot. The constant bustle was dizzying, and he and Annie, who still held each other's hands from time to time for a few more years, both found their individual ways to escape the world. For Annie, it was fantasy and fairytales; for Mark, it was knowledge and fact.

Mark couldn't say when he first started learning languages. He is sure that it started with Hanalan, which he taught Annie as well as he learned it, a kind of partnership for when she would read him her storybooks. But eventually, both of them grew older, and Annie quit reading Mark as many fairytales, and in return, Mark quit teaching Annie quite as many little trivial facts about language and mathematics and history. He taught himself Old Hanalan, Korin, Megam, Dentorian, and even some Atsirian -- and a tiny bit of Kilian, though it's the language that's given him the most trouble so far. He's read about wars, about skirmishes between Korin houses and Dentorian houses and Atsirian houses and more. He taught himself multiplication tables, division, and for his hard work he got put in charge of the bookkeeping for the inn. Mark got used to Annie picking his locks even when he tried to shut himself away, and so they continued a much quieter partnership over the years.

Life continued in this sort of dull roar, business followed by solitude and simplicity, until one day Annie burst into the room, telling him what a great fairy story she'd found this time, but she couldn't read it all and besides, she knew he would like it. She shoved a book into his hands, and he read the same things she had -- a woman from Dentoria named Faith, an archer from Hanalan named Irving, a mage from Kilia named Jonathan, a thief from Kanemoria named Alex (who was later named Jace). For all he felt he'd grown out of fairy stories, he had to admit this was quite the work, and he read it along with Annie for all the months before she discovered that it was real, doing the translating for her and developing his own favorite characters (and crushes) and plot theories.

Once Annie discovered how real the journals were, understandably, the gap between them began to grow again.

.personality.

Mark is afraid of offending anybody, especially those he knows or cares for, including Annie and Ella. Whenever one of them gets angry or upset, even if the frustration isn't directed at him, he tends to close in on himself, retreating completely and trying to do whatever he thinks will calm the other person (or people) down again. He'll agree to anything -- increased workloads, extra chores, etc -- just to get the person to stop being angry. Years of growing up with Ella have made him terrified of anger and aggression, and in return he's grown passive and agreeable to a fault.

Under normal circumstances, Mark is very shy and almost a recluse. He rarely comes out of his room, and even manages to somehow escape helping Ella overmuch with work when he can do so. He's a scholar despite his family's less-than-noble status in Hanalan of all places. He's taught himself languages and poetry for the sake of knowing them. He has a fondness for William the Bard, as well as Sir Robert Frost; they're the two he lists as his favorites anytime he's asked. He's read books of history, literature, and even some mathematics, just because it's there to learn.

People outside of his family tend to frighten him, especially girls, who he doesn't have a clue how to act around, especially during the few (very few) times that they flirt with him or show any sort of interest. He'll stutter an excuse to get himself out of the situation, then run upstairs and bury himself in a book and try to forget how utterly stupid he felt (and probably looked, for that matter). He gets embarrassed easily and tends to be intensely self-pitying when he is. On the other end of things, he's usually also very embarrassed by flattery or kindness directed at him, even in a non-romantic or flirtatious manner. He has a perpetual feeling that he doesn't really deserve what he's getting, but it's not like he can turn down a gift or a compliment, so instead he blushes and says thank you before again going back to his room to bury himself in a book. He also tends to overthink just about any situation, whether it has to do with him or with somebody else.

Around those he knows, he tends to be more relaxed and slightly more open, though not by terribly much. He's always been closer with Annie than with Ella -- while Annie pushes him around, she doesn't do it quite as angrily or pushily as Ella tends to do. When the two of them fight, he again tends to shut down fairly utterly, not only not choosing to take sides, but actually unable to do so in fear of making things worse.

.appearance.

Mark has short-cut hair that's similar to his sister's in its color -- bright blue. He doesn't tend to comb it very well, and as a result it often falls over his eyes. This inevitably ends in Ella telling him to get a haircut even though he tells her he's too busy. He has hazel eyes, and seems to look perpetually anxious or uncomfortable. He's also short, scrawny, and has a very distinct look to him that says he doesn't know how to really take care of himself, whether it's combing his hair or bandaging up a cut.
