A colourful and engaging picture book, this literary nonfiction text highlights themes of freedom, remembrance, and unity by describing Juneteenth celebrations. Seen through the eyes of a young girl, readers are immersed in the sights and sounds of the celebration, witnessing the strength of a community as it reflects on and honours the identity, belonging, and cultural heritage of the Black community. In a primary classroom, the book lends itself well as a class read-aloud and may invite classroom discussions about how families and communities come together to remember the past and celebrate their freedom and cultural pride. Students may be encouraged to explore themes of equity, resilience, and cultural expression and to appreciate the different experiences of people within the classroom and their own communities.
