Spent the afternoon at Hugh and Meredith's, where Hugh showed Sophia how his 3d printer works (and how he makes 3d dungeons out of foam). Very cool stuff, and they both enjoyed their souvenirs.
Original is here on Pixelfed.scot.

So, you got my opinion on Heated Rivalry, but I gotta say, I will never not read fanfics structured like ongoing internet sagas.

Also, gotta love the one dude, BostonSportsBro69, who posts in both /r/relationship_advice and /r/hockey going around in /r/hockey saying "Uh, no, it's just normal sportsbro rival stuff, you're all reading way too much into this" when because he absolutely knows better. (I don't think he's supposed to be one of Ilya's teammates, just a fan.)

Bletchley Park

Last weekend, we stayed in a Landmark Trust property a mere half-hour journey to Bletchley Park. We were surprised by nice weather on the Saturday, so we made the trip. Below is an assortment of photos from the selection of buildings we managed to visit over the course of five hours. I don’t think we saw more than a third of it, so we’ll definitely take advantage of the year-long entry that the steep admission price gets you to see the rest.

The dingy basement has had a lick of paint and yet somehow doggedly retains its character.

Listening stations.

Keiki does some Morse code-breaking.

20260214_122017

Humuhumu does some Enigma encoding.

20260214_132228

A surprisingly dry and sunny day after all the rain we’ve been having.

Daffodils were not quite ready.

The Mansion seemed like it was a bit of all right.

Not so sure the Intelligence Factory needs this.

20260214_140003

Humuhumu and I spent quite a while on this interactive exhibit, plotting the locations of various maritime assets and enemies.

20260214_135239

20260214_140029

Many of the personal testimonials in the exhibition mention how boring and repetitive some of the intelligence work was.

20260214_140504

You can see why they resorted to putting frogs in the pneumatic tube system to liven up the day.

The Park is beautifully maintained and the interactive exhibits are well designed and engaging - I’d say from the age of about 10 on up - so well worth a visit. I restrained myself to one book in the gift shop (The Walls Have Ears by Helen Fry) but could easily have brought home a stack.

I want to talk about the education privilege meme that's been doing the rounds. On the one hand I love old-school memes that encourage lots of cool people on my d-roll to talk about their experiences growing up. But at the same time, I'm kind of frowning at this particular iteration.

thinky thoughts )

Anyway, hopefully this is an adequate substitute for the meme and you don't need me to tell you in detail how absurdly precocious I was in reading and maths.

Sometimes cats enter a full house, and that's no less wholesome than them being your first pets.

You see, adopting your first cat can happen in a multitude of ways. Whether it's a childhood cat, a weird case of finding a cat in an unexpected place (usually the courtesy of the Cat Distribution System), or planning on adopting a cute little fluffball to add to your domestic zoo of pets you have at home. But sometimes it's a surprising, unexpected CDS delivery, even if you're a self-declared dog person.

This one woman already has two dogs - and that's got to be a handful. Two doggos running the show, borking and wagging, excited and happy. But then a neighbor alerts her that, hey, you have a crying kitten under your tire! She might be a dog person, but it doesn't mean she's going to skip helping a purrfect little void in need. And, you know what? We're so proud of her. We're all cat people here, but we have a very special corner in our hearts dedicated to non-cat people who still lend a hand, give from themselves to help a cat, and maybe even turn into a cat person in the process.

Cats love to play the "cool and disconnected" character, but deep down, we know that they're all secretly derpy divas. It's our job as cat owners to reveal their inner truth for the whole internet to see!

We're convinced that cameras were invented for the sole purrpose of exposing cats' true nature. We know that there are lots of other things to take pictures of, but literally none of them interest us except for cats. And if you're reading this too, we think there's a good chance that you probably agree with us. And since the invention of cameras, people have been taking pictures of their cats (amongst other things, of course). Since then, cat lovers have been on a purrsonal vendetta to show people that cats aren't as cool, calm, and collected as they like to be purrceived as.

What do you think of when you think of cats? You think of sleek, fluffy creatures that always land on their feetsies. Of cute creatures that nap all day, swat at you if you pet them too many times, and are hesitant around other hoomans. But, cats are quite the opposite! They're actually the silliest creatures we let live in our houses, and these purrfectly documented pics below are our proof.

The immaculate images below show felines fully embracing the derp within, and believe us, they have more derp inside than you could ever imagine. If we had to give you one example, it would be that we've caught our cat trying to chew on the hanging metal switch on our lamp than we can count. It's not edible, nor is it remotely tasty (we tried). And yet, it's still their furvorite pastime.

This is just one of many things we can tell you, but it's easier to show you, which is why we've collected all these hilariously funny felines caught on camera. They can't hide it anymore, these purrfect pictures are furrever immortalized on the internet, and now their secret it out. We only hope we don't come home to find something in all of our shoes when we get home.

In a world full of seriousness and chaos, what we need is a serving of pure silly nonsense.

We really do mean that. We are the kind of people who try to find joy in the little things. And although some days it is harder than other days, we still make an effort. And we make an effort to bring that joy to you as well. Of course, you might find that joy in friends, in family, in doing your favorite activities and working on your hobbies, but these things are not always available right away. What is always right there for us though - the one thing that never fails to make us smile - are hilarious cat memes.

All it takes for a frown to be turned upside down is a few minutes of scrolling through silly cat memes. Or at least, that is how it works for us. It's why we keep collecting these funny cat memes for all of you guys. Because we love knowing that we're helping bring you the thing that will make you smile. And also because we just love doing it. Hey, we're allowed to get two birds with one stone, right?

On Wednesday, my father pulled up a flyer on Facebook for a nerd-show next weekend and incredibly nearby. Even though I have a fairly strict no-winter-shows rule because, uh, weather, this is close enough and cheap enough that I figured if I get a table and nothing comes of it, I at least got to hang out with other nerds for a few hours. Anyway, got a table, lol, and will spend some of this weekend/coming week sorting out some stuff to take. This looks like it might become ~monthly and if it takes off and I can maintain a table, it'll really help the clear-out. (The only other table I have booked this year is Semmex and that's not a personal table. I also don't want to spend every weekend this year trying to sell my stuff but I really do need to do the cleanout. Blrgh. Blrrrrgh.)

Finished up the KO GM and it's... okay. Some parts sucked to build but overall it's fine. I was thinking he needed a friend and was looking up other GMs and then suddenly remembered maybe I had one in the back of a cabinet? Sure enough... It is a very old HGUC kit and the nubs have yellowed like I've seen on a lot of old Gundam Wing kits. Since this GM has probably been in the back of the cabinet since being built, I can only assume it's age + plastic quality. Anyway, the GMs can be slightly messy friends, lol.

Going to work on the Destiny Astray today and maybe get the body done this weekend? I'm hopeful. IDK what my next kit will be but it will be Bandai so it at least will go together without extensive modification and/or pain.

Used my manga TBR boardgame.

I finished 7/6 on my last board. Even though I only read 1 chapter of non-BL stuff, the BL stuff was mostly great so I was happy. :'> I hope I get to read another great BL and I'll get to use my new scale again.

Roll #1:

An 8! Generate from TBR list! #1108. It's a oneshot called Meimu.

Roll #2:

A 10, prompt: roommates. 3P Lovers Shared House. The tags are very polarizing, apparently it's both toxic AND wholesome...

Roll #3:

An 8, prompt: amnesia. B-Eyes. This one has both shoujo and bromance so I'm a little worried, maybe I'll be able to OT3 them in my head though?

Roll #4:

A 5, prompt: historical. Let's see how well I remember Golden Kamuy...

Roll #5:

A 7, prompt: manga by a woman that got an anime. Blue Exorcist.

Roll #6:

An 8 and the end, that went fast although I'm about to conk the fuck out. The physical BL manga this time is Sweet Revolution. Only 5 single volumes left now...

Most looking forward to: 3P Lovers Shared House
Least looking forward to: Meimu? it's only like 8 pages though

I was going to shop around Jackson but once I got there apparently everyone in a 100 mile radius showed up. It was hilariously crowded so I cut my day in half. I did get to the coffee house and like the jackass I am saw one open table and three people in line so I threw my shit on that table got all comfy then got in line. I wrote. I finish that chapter I've been trying to finish for a month. I started a new story. I might share it tomorrow to see if it feels like it would draw you in.

I couldn't recycle today because it looked like none of the 8 dumpsters had been emptied since I was there last week. People were trying to toss stuff a top the mountains. I noped out of that, hit the library and Kroger (I guess this snow tomorrow is going to be worse than I heard?) which was packed to the gills.

I also managed to hit Tractor Supply. I now own six black ducklings and a dozen of mixed peeps. Okay not really but probably only because I love to travel and can't take care of farm animals. I did get onion sets though and my brush on a stick so I can clean the kitchen floor. This is a Liberman (like my broom) 15$. All the other brands were 40$ and up. I'm like dudes, it's a brush on a stick. I can buy two of this one for one of yours and yours didn't seem considerably better.

There was a handmade lemonade 'food' truck in the parking lot. I got the holy water lemonade (strawberry, peach, something I'm forgetting and blue curacao and I nearly drank it all in one go I ate the lemons in it to. Have I mentioned I love lemons? (bought another half dozen of them today)

I saw a facebook announcement that the Bourbon City steampunk already has their panels filled up and I didn't get an email so I guess I ain't one of them. What sucks is I have the tickets but its on graduation. BUT they're also doing a writing thing so I am going to try that too. Who knows. I might just tell my bosses I have a convention. Do they need to know what kind?

And I am already sending my panel ideas to the Gettysburg steampunk thing. I mean I left it too long on Bourbon but it's early days for Gettysburg.

Trying to clear my calendar and hunker down for the next few days in light of the storm had me allowing myself a little bit of panic buying in the form of another bottle of olive oil. It's not on the same level as rescheduling an appointment because I know there's no point trying to get anywhere farther than two blocks, maximum, come Monday, but it helped a bit.

I'm also charging up my devices as something of an insurance policy and made sure to return all my outstanding library checkouts. Again, something that only helped a bit, and still helped. Mostly I'm now waiting for it to arrive so I can finally enjoy the snow. The build-up to it isn't nearly as enjoyable.

What is my favorite place in the world?

God. Uh. Hmm.

I want to toss some far-flung locales on here, but I haven't been there in over twenty years and God only knows if they're still nice, so. I guess we'll go with the places I have known well and loved.

It's a toss-up between:

The Salt Lake City Public Library, at least as I remember it circa 2010 (which, God, was a long time ago...!) — I went to a bunch of poetry readings etc here and always loved it and felt very in my element whenever I was there, and the rooftop garden is super neat.

Cape Perpetua, because it's fucking beautiful.

Swan Lake, Montana, because I spent just about every childhood here from the time I was 4 to the time I was 14.

Mesa Verde, because it's just fucking cool.

SF MoMA, because I adore it and have a lot of great memories of visiting different exhibits there (for several years in a row I had business stuff that took me to San Francisco at least once if not twice a year, and I always hit up SF MoMA when I went).

Anyway yes, I am Indecisive, you are welcome :D

The Canadian federal government should do for the Heritage Foundation what they did for the Proud Boys: designate them as a terrorist organization.

(Noting that I have been privately and rightly warned that this might backfire given the setting of precedent, depending on who forms government over the years and decades to come.)

If you live in the BosWash Corridor, especially in NYC-to-Boston, you need to be paying attention to the weather. We have an honest to gosh Nor'easter blizzard predicted for the next 3 days, with heavy wet snow and extremely high winds – the model predicts the damn thing will have an eye – which of course is highly predictive of power outages due to downed lines.

Plug things what need it into electricity while ya got it.

Whiteout conditions expected. The NWS's recommendation for travel is: don't. Followed by recommendations for how to try not to die if you do: "If you must travel, have a winter survival kit with you. If you get stranded, stay with your vehicle."

I would add to that: if you get stranded in your car by snow and need to run the engine for heat, you must also periodically clear the build-up of snow blocking the tailpipe, or the exhaust will back up into the passenger compartment of the car and gas you to death.

As always, for similar reasons do not try to use any form of fire to heat your house if the regular heat goes out, unless you have installed the necessary hardware into the structure of your house, i.e. chimneys, fireplaces, and wood stoves, and they have been sufficiently recently serviced and you know how to operate them safely. The number one killer in blizzards is not the cold, it's the carbon monoxide from people doing dumb shit with hibachis.

NWS says DC to get 2 to 4 inches, NYC/BOS to get 1 to 2 feet. Ryan Hall Y'all reports some models saying up to 5 inches in DC and up to three feet in NYC and BOS.

2026 Feb 21 (5 hrs ago): Ryan Hall Y'all on YT: "The Next 48 Hours Will Be Absolutely WILD...". See particularly from 3:30 re winds.

If somehow you don't already have a preferred regular source of NWS weather alerts – my phone threw up one compliments of Google, and I didn't even know it was authorized to do that – you can see your personal NWS alerts at https://forecast.weather.gov/zipcity.php , just enter your zipcode. Also you should get yourself an app or something.

You can't have your cake and eat it too, but you can have these cat memes.

This English proverb didn't gain popular recognition for nothing. The proverb literally means "you cannot simultaneously retain possession of a cake and eat it, too". If the cake is eaten, then it's gone. There's no going back. You can't have two incompatible things at once, or at least you should try not to have them. You can't have the best of both worlds, you have to give up something for something else. But let's talk about actual cake. Being a baker and cake designer is a life filled with flour, dust, and imagination. Colors and sticky frostings surround you as you wake up before the sun where the kitchen is quiet and everything feels silly already. There's something so comforting about measuring ingredients and slowly cracking eggs one at a time into a bowl. The level of precision is immaculate, and it's both a science, an art, and an expression.

Bakers learn patience, dough needs time to rise, and cakes need cooling. You can also put cats on cakes! There's no saying you can't. And if you have one cat, you don't have to listen to the above proverb. You can have your cat, your cake, and eat whatever you please. Meaning you can have your cat, cake, and still lazily scroll funny cat memes for the weekend (or work week). Enjoy these silly cat memes for the whole family.
