ted: if you wish to make an apple pie from scratch, first you must invent the universe (apple pie)
I haven't been passing the Black March posts on, either on my tumblr or here, because something about it bothered me. My first thought was for independant book shops, and for the tiny cinemas that survive by showing indie films, and how the big chains etc. have the resources to survive March where these smaller companies simply don't. The recession has already emptied their pockets, this could kill them, and that only makes us even more dependant on the sodding mega-chains and uber-corporations that think they can throw their weight around like this already. But I didn't exactly have any better suggestions on how to balance sending a message against 'think of the little guy'.

Then a post came across my tumblr dash that coalesced those feelings a bit, so basically that's what I'm going to be doing this March instead of a full boycott. Go straight to the independents (my main worry about how do-able this is is the shells that the big companies set up to look like smaller, indie brands and get people's money anyway, but this is the internet, and if there's anywhere that info will be available it's on here.) Buy small press books through independent book shops (I know I'm lucky to still have one, but I think that puts even more on me to make the effort), see independent films, buy self-published music.

Call me optimistic, but I do think this message can be sent without screwing over the people who've already said "FUCK YOU, I DO WHAT I WANT!" to Hollywood and the big corporate forces, and I don't want those independant producers and distributers to be fighting on two fronts for the duration of March.

After the day I've had (do not get me started) I'm not sure if I'll be online tomorrow, and I have a lot of family stuff over Christmas. Therefore I'm going to do this early:

Cut because it's bigger than I expected. )

I know I haven't been around much recently, and that's likely to get worse before it gets better. I'm only really responding to links or what I come across in short intervals (Richard's asleep at the moment so I have a bit longer to post.)

Hope everyone's okay, and having a significantly better time than I am.

Bah.

I need to stop reading borderline/outright triggery shit or I'm going to end up in another episode. I stayed off the internet for a while, came back and got hit again.

FFS, self, most of it's labelled, have some goddamn control.

There's a nasty computer virus on the rounds and I appear to have picked it up. It looks almost exactly like an automatic windows update, which is how I fell for it. I figured if I gave y'all a heads up then anyone using windows would know to watch out for it.

Might be offline for a while, my netbook is currently a paperweight and my pain levels aren't good enough for extended periods at a desk so unless something works out soon internet browsing will need to be done from my phone, which gives me a killer headache. I am unamused by this bullshit. >:(

Hope you're all having a better day. ♥

I realise I've gone a bit quiet with no explanation, well I got roped into NaNoWriMo because my bff 'needed moral support'. Of course Mr. I Need Moral Support has just passed the 20k mark while I'm staring at 8k and whimpering a lot. Bastard.

I'm rewriting fairytales in different genres, which I know isn't exactly new or imaginative, but it's fun and I had to come up with an idea at 2 pm on Nov. 1st. So far Cinderella is Detective Noir, and Red Riding Hood is Science Fiction.

In other news, I'm now a red-head! :D It was a snap decision, but I think it suits me. Of course my family is even more convinced that I'm having some sort of midlife crisis, but anyway. I have red hair and I bought some more make up (treated myself to Urban Decay's Black palette because I can use them as eyeliner - I'm mostly sticking to guyliner and a smoky eye rather than going the full hog) and I'm happily experimenting.

Okay, back to the word count. UUUUUURGH.
ted: (rain)
Okay, so Richard's just informed me (literally on the way to the airport) that although the place we're staying at is advertised as having internet access someone who's been before told him that it's intermittent at best and ridiculously slow. So if you don't hear from me for a couple of weeks you know why. I guess it means I'll get some serious novel reading done. XD

I think I've got everything; I keep having those quiet little panicky moments wondering if I left the gas on, or whether I've got my med certifications, or my chargers. With any luck I'll spend most of the journey asleep.

Hope everyone has a good time, take care of yourselves, and I'll talk to you when I talk to you. ♥

Heads Up.

I'm messing with my meds. Things shouldn't get too weird because I'm being careful, but I figured I should mention it just in case (preliminary results: my concentration has gone to shit and scrolling down my friends page is giving me awful motion sickness - that doesn't exactly help with the nausea, let me tell you internets.)

Commenting is switched off because, honestly, as soon as I've caught up on my inbox and flist I think I need to lie down. Hope everyone's having a good day. ♥

These things always seem to happen when I'm exhausted and/or can't think straight (though, to be fair, that's pretty often these days.)

Some people may have heard about the new racefail in SPN fandom; maybe because they're in that specific fandom, maybe because they're in the more aware parts of fandom at large.

First it was <lj user="shiinabambi"> telling us that we were using the Tone Argument on a racist by telling her to not say racist things, and now <lj user="herongale"> would like us to know that she hates the Tone Argument, because people use it as an excuse to be angry, when "[she] would hope that most people who have been the victims of racism and sexism and ablism and... all isms... would recognize their own continuing obligations to be civil in most circumstances."  No, dipstick, you don't hate the argument, you just used it.  And giving ravyn_skye screaming about being persecuted for lolicon as an example of why the Tone Argument is bad... there are no words.

Phrases mean things; don't go using them if you don't understand what they are.

FFS, I'm supposed to be writing my announcement post... I think I'll have to leave it until tomorrow.

Okay, so the rant that this was in has been deleted, but it pissed me off:

"I mean, if someone can cope with a parent dying of Alzheimers, but some bad reviews on FF.net are the ones that tip them over..well..someone clearly doesn't have their priorities right." (eternalwings)

Yeah, grief is so fucking logical.

I would have posted to FFRR, but since I managed to hold it together until we ran out of toothpaste the morning after the funeral I'm not really up to dealing with the inevitable "well she did have her priorities wrong!" idiots, and I know I can guarantee at least one.  (p.s. it was sixteen years ago, condolences not needed, I'm just really, really pissed at the 'get your priorities right!' and already on shaky ground mood-wise.)

Don't get me wrong, the rant itself was a hot mess, it was just the stupidity of that comment that floored me.
ted: (lolz!)

Fuck yes! I've just won a fiver! I bet M that there would be a pop at Twilight within five opening comments on this FFR rant, (it was considered to be a sure thing that there would be a LOLZ TWILIGHT comment.)

Nice sunny day and surprise beer money, I hope this is a good omen for the weekend.  :D

This time with disabled commenting on the cross-post.  Apologies for spamming.

BTW, which of these options would the people on my flist prefer?

ted: (sat)

I'm just experimenting with this automatic cross-posting thing. :D

I'm trying to think of what communities I want to start too; I've set up an RP one for when there are more people here, mayby a rec comm?  I meant to do that on LJ last year.  Then again that would involve a lot more reading time than I have nowadays.

*gasp*

ZOMG, I managed to get a three letter username!  (FTR, I tried about sixteen different combinations of teddy/theo/teddybear before trying it as a longshot.  M is going to be jealous because he was disappointed 'Mac' was gone.)

EEE!  *runs off to explore dreamwidth*  I don't know what to do first.  XD  Thank Kaz for my invite code, that'll come first.  *thanks Kaz*
