The Vale Technological Institute (ITV) plays an essential role in this journey, conducting scientific research and generating knowledge for a more sustainable future. With units in Belém/PA and Ouro Preto/MG, ITV seeks new solutions to transform the mining chain and contribute to socio-environmental development.
In addition to conducting research, ITV also plays a crucial role in talent development, preparing professionals to apply their knowledge and foster innovations in science, technology, and sustainability. Only between 2023 and 2024, more than 190 students graduated, ready to contribute with their skills and expertise to the advancement of these areas.

Belt Groove Detector
A computer vision-based solution has been applied in Vale's operations to detect, in less than three seconds, tears or grooves in conveyor belts and automatically trigger the equipment's stop, preventing further damage. Integrated into the operating systems, the feature increases the reliability of operations, reduces costs with corrective maintenance, and eliminates the need for manual inspections in risk areas.
Sustainable PET Suppressor
Turning waste into innovative solutions is part of our commitment to the environment. With the Sustainable PET Suppressor, we redefine the destination of plastic bottles, transforming them into an efficient resin for dust control in ore and coal piles. This technology not only reduces environmental impacts, but also drives the circular economy, generating opportunities for waste picker associations and promoting the reuse of materials that would otherwise be discarded.
Briquette
Innovation in mining directly reflects on the industrial chain. The briquette is a product developed to make steel production more efficient and sustainable. Its differential lies in the composition and the production process, which demand less energy and help reduce greenhouse gas emissions. This solution represents a concrete step towards the decarbonization of the steel industry, balancing operational performance and environmental commitment.

The tailings sand emerges as an innovative alternative that reuses this material, reducing the need for new dams and decreasing the extraction of natural sand.
This solution contributes to a more sustainable mining model, ensuring that resources are used more efficiently and with less impact on the environment.

An initiative that applies artificial intelligence embedded in off-road trucks to optimize operational speed and reduce fuel consumption, promoting gains in efficiency, safety, and sustainability in mine operations.
