The other day, I was reading the graphic novel version of the Star Trek episode "The City on the Edge of Forever" by Harlan Ellison; and I was struck by how visible the contrast was in opinions about a future society, as seen by Gene Roddenberry and Harlan Ellison. Gene Roddenberry sought a wondrous utopia of fully enlightened human beings; Harlan Ellison saw the cracks in this picture, with the presence, or rather, the persistence, of selfish and cruel people, even among the band of heroes that was the officer corps of the Federation's Starfleet. One of my hobbies is imagining and drawing stories; ever since I was 13, I've been developing a science fiction plot, imagining a future human society. Obviously, as one might expect from someone who spent their childhood in the 70s and their adolescence in the 80s, I was heavily influenced by TV series like Star Trek, Buck Rogers, and Battlestar Galactica. At that time, my parents enrolled me in a book club, and through it they bought me "A

The title of this post, in Portuguese, means "Everybody wants to rules the world", the title of that song by the band Tears for Fears. Because, in a way, "ruling the world" is something I'm trying to do in my art in particular. The art I'm posting on this profile (and, to a lesser extent, on Facebook and other social media) are illustrations of a small "personal universe" that I'm elaborating in various small fragments of text, like pieces of a puzzle or a mosaic that, hopefully, I intend to assemble later. And the title, in my native Portuguese, reflects the fact that I might have to translate what I'm creating, and I'm shamefully dependent on Google Translate. Not bad for someone who only has a high school level of English and aspires to master Japanese and French (just to read comic books and, hopefully, exchange letters with their authors). The world depicted in the artwork posted on this profile is a manifestation of hope, a desire for a world less bad than our current one; just

In his book "Fun with a Pencil" (1939), the great master Andrew Loomis wrote the dedication "Dedicated to everyone who loves a pencil". It's truly one of the cornerstones of art, understanding the fundamental instrument that allows everyone to make their ideas visible. It doesn't matter if we have formidable means to execute our ideas, such as Photoshop, Illustrator, 3D modeling programs, or Artificial Intelligence image generation applications (by the way, not so "artificial" and not so "intelligent," but...), without pencil and paper, an idea has no life; it's like a newborn baby thrown into a trash can. Look, my contemporaries, I am not a Luddite who rejects new ways of performing tasks, quite the contrary: DeviantArt has become an ocean of AI images (since Sotira left?), and I have no problem with that at all, I use all the AI images I find, and whenever I can, I commend those who produced them, because I incorporate them into my own collection of references that I use as a model

Thx for the watch ! Very great artwork and universe ! Keep your good work ! (remind me kind of "Captain Harlock" style ...)

Thank you very much; although I think my fictional universe is more like "Captain Haddock" than "Captain Harlock".

:D

(In reality, my plot contains elements inspired by a mix of Star Trek, Starship Troopers, and Battlestar Galactica; with a solarpunk and slice-of-life feel. Let's see how far I can take this.)
