Trans Mountain’s Commitment

Trans Mountain is committed to ensuring environmental protection remains a top priority wherever we operate. We expect all employees and contractors to share our goals of ensuring safety, protecting the environment, using material, natural resources and energy efficiently, and promoting environmental best practices and sustainable development. Trans Mountain’s Environmental Commitment Statement affirms our commitment to environmental protection and excellence, establishing environmental requirements and expectations across the organization.

Environmental Protection

  • Air Quality and Emissions – While not a significant generator of fugitive or greenhouse gas emissions, Trans Mountain strives for the responsible management of air emissions generated by the company. Trans Mountain actively incorporates the mitigation and reduction of emissions from its operations through design, construction, and operating practices and works collaboratively with communities regarding potential air quality issues. Trans Mountain owns and operates dedicated air quality monitoring stations at all major terminals. View our annual air quality reports and data in the Air Quality and Meteorological Monitoring Data and Reports section below.
  • Contaminated Sites – Assessment and remediation of contaminated sites are managed in accordance with the CER Remediation Process Guide. Contamination can result from past operations and maintenance practices or releases at company facilities and rights-of-way. Trans Mountain is committed to effective management of contaminated sites to minimize and prevent potential impacts on human health and the environment.
  • Environmental Planning – Operations and maintenance activities with potential environmental impacts undergo a review to identify potential environmental impacts and develop appropriate mitigation measures. These mitigations address soil preservation, water management and protection, wildlife and wildlife habitat, and biosecurity.
  • Groundwater Monitoring – Groundwater is an important resource and an essential part vital component of natural ecosystems and community health. To minimize potential impacts to groundwater, Trans Mountain undertakes regular groundwater monitoring at our facilities to ensure early detection and mitigation of potential issues
  • Post-Disturbance Monitoring – To minimize the impacts of ground disturbance activities associated with operations and maintenance work, Trans Mountain monitors impacted areas for reclamation success. This includes assessing the re-establishment of vegetation, weed infestations and erosion and compaction issues. Post-construction environmental monitoring (PCEM) is also part of this process.
  • Vegetation Management – Problem vegetation, including noxious and invasive plant species, can impact pipeline safety and the environment. These species can also affect land use and are a concern for regulatory agencies, landowners and Indigenous communities especially near Trans Mountain facilities and rights-of-way. Trans Mountain conducts vegetation management to ensure these plants are controlled, minimizing potential impacts to the environment, landowners and Indigenous communities. Additionally, vegetation management processes align with the BC Ministry of Environment and Climate Change Strategy’s Integrated Pest Management Act.
  • Waste Management – Waste can affect the environment, requiring responsible management to prevent or reduce its impact. Trans Mountain is committed to minimizing and properly managing waste generated by its activities in accordance with applicable legislation. This involves proper characterization, transportation and disposal of waste at approved facilities that have undergone a review process to ensure compliance with governmental requirements.
