Keynote Speaker

Niigaan Sinclair

Niigaan Sinclair is Anishinaabe from Peguis First Nation and a professor in the Department of Indigenous Studies at the University of Manitoba. He has been a columnist for the Free Press since 2018, and has twice been named Canadian Columnist of the Year at the National Newspaper Awards, in 2018 and 2025, and, together with Dan Lett, has a podcast called Niigaan and the Lone Ranger, where they talk politics, culture , and media from here in the geographical centre of Canada.

His book Wînipêk: Visions of Canada from an Indigenous Centre is a national bestseller and won the 2024 Governor General’s Literary Award for Nonfiction, and he has written the memoir of his father, the late Honourable Murray Sinclair in Who We are: Four Questions for a Life and Nation.

Both Wînipêk and Who We Are invite readers into important conversations about history, identity, reconciliation, and belonging. They challenge assumptions, celebrate resistance, and remind us that stories are not simply records of the past, they are toopls for shaping the future.

That idea is central to Niigaan Sinclair’s work. Reflecting on the purpose of storytelling, he said: “Stories give us a reason to be.”

He believes that stories help us understand where we come from, make sense of who we are, and imagine where we might go next. Through personal reflection, historical insight, and compelling narratives, Sinclair invites readers to participate in conversations that shape the future of Canada.
