Innovation at Ørsted

Powering the future of renewable energy through technology, collaboration, and new thinking

The future of offshore wind starts here

Innovation is of central importance to Ørsted’s ability to lead our industry. It enables us to stay competitive, resilient, and ready to meet tomorrow’s energy system challenges. It helps us deliver on our promise to facilitate the renewable energy transition via the world’s largest portfolio of offshore wind farms.

Across this portfolio – and throughout the company – we’re developing new technologies, business models, and partnerships that make renewable energy more efficient, more sustainable, and more valuable.

A company-wide mindset

Ørsted's dedicated innovation team initiates and coordinates wide-ranging innovation projects, all of which must pass through our structured innovation pipeline. More generally, we promote innovation as a company-wide mindset that drives everything we do.

From idea to impact

Every new idea we come up with must pass through a structured innovation pipeline:

1. Scouting and incubation – identifying technologies that can transform how we build and operate assets.

2. Piloting and validation – testing solutions in real project environments.

3. Commercialisation– scaling proven technologies across Ørsted’s global portfolio.

Collaborative innovation

At Ørsted, we believe that innovation thrives in collaboration. Our teams work closely with universities, startups, suppliers, and local communities to co-develop solutions with real-world impact. Internally, our Innovation team acts as a hub for emerging technologies and business models, helping our global organisation test, scale, and commercialise new ideas.

We know the future of renewable energy can’t be built alone. That’s why we collaborate with other innovators – from global research institutions to local suppliers and technology startups.

Our joint projects explore advanced materials, AI and robotics, digital twins, and sustainable operations.

Innovation is a critical a part of Ørsted today as it was in 1991, when we – quite literally – innovated the world’s first offshore wind farm. Since then, our collaborative approach has led to an impressive string of new solutions.
