Video Killed The Radio Star

Been a while since we posted anybody else's dope videos up here so...

We've always had love for the Seclusiasis label on here but this video from Warsnare and Fille de la Lune properly blew me away. Not heard the EP yet but I'm off to get a copy as soon as I've written this post.

Dark moody swagged out business from Black Dahlia, a dope new project from one of our favourite producers, Blue Daisy and rapper Hey!Zeus.

This is probably our favourite thing right now. Pure sunshine vibes from our South Wales compadres, Metabeats, Vanity Jay and the Associated Minds family. 80 Boogie Meets 90s RNB, Meets Future Funk... and that's just the video. Complete win.

This SOPHIE track hasn't got a video to go with it as such but as their only sending out YouTube promos and I'm feeling it, here it is.

Do Androids Attend Electric Sheep?

Good Monday people, hopefully you will have recovered from this Weekend's festivities in tine for the coming Bank Holdiay weekend, as we are programming an event at Cardiff Arts Institute from Friday to Sunday. Many of the acts playing will be recognisable to our regular readers and if you are anywhere near the vicinity would be great to see you all. Here's the info...

Image

ELECTRIC SHEEP WEEKENDER
Friday 27th - Sunday 29th May 2011 (Bank Holiday Weekend)
Cardiff Arts Institute, 29 Park Place. CF10 3BA
£4 per day (limited £6 passes for all 3 days)

3 SECRET HEADLINERS // DOC DANEEKA + BENJAMIN DAMAGE (LIVE) // MONKY (HOYA HOYA / ROBOX NEOTECH) // DIDZ & CHICO (TEN THOUSAND YEN) // RATCATCHER // TELEGRAM FROM THE QUEEN (JUVENILE SCUM) // MR HEALAN // DAI VERSE (DIVERSE CONCEPTS) // CHROME KIDS // ZWOLF // OWAIN K // STD // DISCORD // KOVAS (64 BARS) // MAXX ROACH //

The Welsh Electronic scene has truly coming into it’s own over the past few years. As musical genres overlap and intertwine, particularly after the Bass music scene in general’s mass migration from formulaic Dubstep, so Wales’ tight knit community of producers and DJs become ever closer, more open and undoubtedly stronger. As celebration of this fact we have brought some of the top artists from the scene together for a long Bank Holiday weekend of showcases, secret sets and a whole lot of drinking and dancing.

Image

We have 3 Secret headliners, all well established acts at the top of their game, plus: Modeselektor’s label signings Doc Daneeka and Ben Damage showcase their new live set ahead of their Melt! Festival debut in Berlin; one of the city’s most forward thinking producers, Monky gets set to show why his future blend of bass heavy beats have been getting so much love across the electronic music world; Cardiff 2 Step tearaways Didz & Chico bring a little ‘something new’ to the table; Chrome Kids drop a rare appearance ahead of shows in Glastonbury and Bestival over the summer; experimental circuit benders Zwolf, STD and Mr Healan step out of the Hip-hop shadows into something altogether more interesting; former CRST member Ratcatcher (Rodski) and Owain K hold it down for the current generation of House producers; whilst Juvenile Scum head honchos and Dirty Sanchez DJs Telegram From The Queen, to quote Redman, ‘come to throw a little mud in this mother**ker’ and make sure proceedings don’t get too serious. With many more up and coming DJs and producers, just starting to cement their reputations as ones to watch also on the bill, this is undoubtedly going to be a great marker on where the scene is now and where it’s heading. There’s plenty more information on each act, as well as free downloads, streaming tracks and videos over at the Cardiff Arts Institute blog http://cardiffartsinstitute.org

More info can be found on the Cardiff Arts Institute Website.

Darkhouse Family - FoF Mix

Image
Our amigos Don Leisure and Metabeats aka Darkhouse Family dropped a great little mixtape for the Friends Of Friends site. Here it is with a bit of blurb from the crew...

“Darkhouse Family is the product of many smokey studio hours shared by Don Leisure & Metabeats… Linking up in late 2007 the duo gelled quickly over a shared musical heritage of hiphop and uk club culture and a loose beat tape project began to grow. This later turned into DHF after the old chopped up soul sample sound was replaced by a more synthed out, smoked out & synthetic sound that the group is known for… The Family Trees EP on Fat City Recordings put Darkhouse on the map with solid DJ support from Martyn, The Gaslamp Killer, Alex Nut, Illum Sphere, Kutmah, Dibiase & more.

This mix is just a collection of some new stuff we’ve been sent and are feeling and some of our latest beats also. One of the loose ideas of the mix was to showcase a bunch of new producers who are making dope tracks who may not be household names to everyone.

We are planning an LP in 2011 but will release some more material on Fat City hopefully this year and also undertake some remix work for Frite Nite and Jon Wayne. Don Leisure also has some solo project work on the bubble and Metabeats is set to release his 2nd LP on Associated Minds and also continues to shake skirts with his CRST project.”

Making Of A Slave

Image
Metabeats and Dubbledge combine on the 'The Making Of A Slave' in honour of Black History Month. Inspired by the Willie Lynch letter, ‘The Making of a Slave’ sees Dubbledge at his most controversial, ironically morphing into the shoes of a slave owner to breakdown the various techniques used to create slaves. However he does so with an intellectual, tongue in cheek delivery and enough humour to turn the ugliest of subjects into an inspirational look at the methods used to create an inbuilt self-destructive mentality that will & has spanned generations. It's thought provoking & definitely worth a listen for some true edutainment.

Dubbledge & Metabeats - The Making of a Slave aka Willie Lynch by AssociatedMinds

The download is free, however. please use the following link and help work towards a better future for us all.

The track is also available from www.dubbledge.bandcamp.com including the original Willie Lynch letter and alternative artwork.

Cardiff Summer Round Up Part I

Things seem to be busy in Cardiff this summer and we've had a number of various gems from our home town which we keep meaning to post. Here's a selection of some and we shall post a bunch more on Tuesday. Hopefully you would have already caught the new Monky, Paul B and Dead Residents mixes we posted recently. If not grab them here.

Image
A few regular readers may remember previous tracks from Cardiff based duo Shadow Law (aka Lex Umbra). Well producer / rapper Ming from the pair has just released a grimey Dubstep EP through Italian label Young NRG Productions that you can pick up now on Juno, Beatport, Dogs On Acid and Track It Down.

C.R.S.T. are fast becoming the number one Future Garage crew of choice, okay so the majority come from Barry rather than Cardiff but for arguments sake we’ll claim a 10 mile radius for our own. They have adorned many a recent mix including the opening track of Doorly’s new Reclaim The Dancefloor CD. Undoubtedly one of our favourite rappers from the scene, Blaktrix is due to drop his long awaited album Some People Never Go Crazy at the end of this year. As a warm up he has compiled a selection of unreleased and previously vinyl only tracks into a kind of story so far ‘mixtape’ called The Houdini Footprints of Some People Never Go Crazy. These tracks include a couple of Monky and Stagga’s earlier productions and the Monky ones in particular still bang hard, have a listen for yourself then grab the whole lot from the Blaktrix Website.

Download: Blaktrix - Tek Time (produced by Monky) / alt link

Download: Blaktrix feat Vocal Recall - Trouble Trouble (produced by Monky) / alt link / video

Finally for now, although Stagga has since relocated to Berlin he still has his hands and heart deep in the area as this new killer Grime / Dubstep / Hip-hop track featuring Skamma and Joe Blow from the Squid Ninjaz shows. This is ridiculously beastly.

The Don Marches On

Image
We've been running round like a bunch of mad March hares for the last month or so and we've taken our eye off the ball a few times. One particular ball just hit us in the face when we realised that the March mix we had off our amgio Don Leisure has slipped into April. We're not the most respectful of rules or time however and this mix will remain fresh for many moons to come so for your listening pleasure...

Don Leisure - March Mix by Chrome Kids on Mixcloud

The mix features new and unreleased tracks by FlyLo, Dilla and Mr Healan, Rodski (from C.R.S.T.) and Metabeats (as Darkhouse Family). There's also a new tune from our boy Monky (note the new spelling).

Loose Women - Rodski x Don Leisure by C.R.S.T

Monky - French Vanilla by Monky

Darkhouse Family also have a track (Stay Blazed) on the new Producer 2 compilation on Fat City which also features Martyn, Dabrye, Daedelus, dBridge and Mike Slott amongst others.

The Bass Too Darkhouse

When compiling our Monday Mixtapes we scandalously overlooked this one from our boys Don Leisure and Metabeats aka Darkhouse Family, who shall be dropping a 12" on Fat City mid April some time.

This mix also contains the future garage track Baduka from Metabeats' alter ego Chesus and fellow Barry dweller Diverse Concepts which we posted earlier and is looking at getting a release sometime soon through Ten Thousand Yen.

This week on the Chrome Mansion's stereo are our Swansea bredren Doc Daneeka has a new EP ready to drop but before that hits the streets he's the latest heartbeat in FACT Magazine's pulse locating finger mixes; on the lower reaches of the BPM scale, Candian Turbo Crunk pioneer Hovatron has put together a phat selection of neck snapping beats for the Lowriders Collective (we should be playing with those guys in Bristol sometime in April so look out for that one); and Baobinga proves his bass seeking, floor filling prowess once again with a big bag a dubz n stuff from his Build label and assorted high ranking amigos.

2 Steps Into The New Year

Image
I have to admit I have something of a soft spot for 2 Step Garage, it was the first music to come through the club speakers at the start of the last decade and thanks to an old mix CD I dugout before heading from city to city this new years it was the last music I really bubbled to at the end of the decade too. Not that this is an admission of guilt, after all I'm in good company with my ...., seems like a large section of the discerning club crowd have fallen back in love with the sound. As if to highlight the point our first post of the year is a mix of Nu-skool 2 step grooves going into a tropical leaning sound from C.R.S.T. from South Wales, whose members are made up of CK favourites Chesus & Rodski, Tony Blitz and J.D.S. All tracks are from the crew except one solo one (see below) from Chesus, who some of the you might recognise as being the alter ego of Metabeats, we told you he was gonna be one to watch this year and it looks like we're heading for a satisfied smug tone for our 2010 round up. From what we understand also, a couple of these tracks should soon seee the light of day courtesy of the fellas at No Hats No Hoods but more info on that as it comes.
