Artists Palette

Image

DEATH VALLEY MONUMENT, CALIFORNIA
ARTIST'S DRIVE
This colorful formation seen along Artist's Drive is known as the Palette. Death Valley's variety of features and vividness of color is fabulous, the flamboyant coloring and unique beauty is in a setting that was millions of years in the making.

Information on the marker:
Various mineral pigments have colored these volcanic deposits. Iron salts produce the reds, pinks and yellows. Decomposing mica causes the green. Manganese supplies the purple. Colors on the "palette" are reproduced in a larger scale on the mountains around Death Valley.

Standing alone in the vast prairie, Chimney Rock, near Bayard in Western Nebraska, guided the weary Oregon Trail travelers. Now a national monument, this wind-eroded sentinel serves as a landmark for the modern-day vacationers, reminding them of Nebraska's rich pioneer past.
