patient care

The Mayo Clinic has been around in one form or another since 1864.  The hospital grew out of a series of devastating tornadoes in 1893.  At the time there were only three hospitals in Minnesota and none were near Rochester.  Enter William Mayo and his sons, all doctors, who led a partnership that ultimately resulted in one of the best hospitals in the world.
This building was built in 1914 and the Kahler Hotel was opened in 1921 as a hybrid hotel and hospital as the beginnings of the Mayo Clinic.

I was attracted to the gauzy appearance of the surrounding neighbourhood of the 53 acre, neatly compacted, compound of the Henry Ford Hospital. It opened in 1915.

built in 1951, this uninspiring hospital building was built as a memorial to the men and women of Pawnee County who served in WWII. An addition in 1966 increased the bed count to 60.

Located on Ross Street.  For three years, I lived across the street from here.  It had expanded several times since opening in 1932 as a 35-bed hospital, and by the time I moved away, there was a brand spanking new hospital built in the far northeast corner of town.  It is known colloquially as RVH, not the Royal Vic.

This particular hospital was added to my collection in part because of the name - Lying-in Hospital.  When it opened in 1931, it was described as "the most beautiful hospital in the world, and it stands as a monument to childbearing women and to the dignity of obstetrics."

college

ImageI have found a new topic to collect - hospitals! Mostly because of their architecture. Yesterday, I showed the very large Columbia Presbyterian Hospital in NYC. This is a much smaller Toronto General Hospital, located at 101 College Street in Toronto and built in 1919. It is still standing and since 2005 has been used as offices for MaRS (Medical and Related Sciences)
