Grand Champions....
Well, I have to brag a little bit on my nieces who just had a day many people only dream about...My 12 year old niece, Emily June, just won Grand Champion Steer overall at the State Fair of Texas with her appropriately named steer, Champ. He weighs 1269 pounds and apparently is pretty hard to handle. She will sale him tomorrow in the premium sale. The Grand Champion Steer last year brought $94,000, so hopefully tomorrow Champ will sale well for her. On top of that, my 8 year old niece, Laurel, won Grand Champion British steer with her calf, BB. This was Laurel's first major show. I just got off the phone with them and they are on cloud nine. Emily June told me she was just hoping Laurel would have a good day since it was her first time. I am so proud of these two sweet girls. They have already accomplished more in their show careers than I did in 9 years of showing. The sky is the limit for them! As if all of this is not good enough, my brother in law, Jacob, of Tusa Show Cattle, sold them both steers and the Reserve Champion overall. I talked to Ingrid tonight and we decided Miss Georgia is a bit of a rabbit's foot. She said Jacob has always dreamed of winning both grand and reserve at the State Fair and today he did it! Hopefully, I will be able to link the media coverage of the sale tomorrow night. One other cool thing is that our sister, Jessica, won Grand Champion Steer overall at the State Fair 25 years ago when she was 12. Sorry to brag, but it is not every day that your nieces win a major show. They are definitely carrying on the Oman tradition!
