My Heartfelt Thank You

Image
IAST Thank You Zendala by Adele Bruno, CZT
The names of 466 IASThingers from around the world who have kindly contributed over the years.

I hope you have as much fun looking for your names as I did writing them in this sea of fellow gifted tanglers.

G.K. Chesterton wrote, "I would maintain that thanks are the highest form of thought;
and that gratitude is happiness doubled by wonder."

My heart is filled with gratitude for all of you, for making these six years of IAST possible, for keeping my enthusiasm for "all things tangled" keen, and for building up this positive and encouraging community.

While I intend to blog from time to time, I must take leave of moderating and conducting our weekly challenges.  I am as sad to say this as I was elated to begin IAST in August of 2013 - but just think of the lasting library we have collectively created.

On the pink header above you can find a wealth of quick references to past years' IASTs, so please make use of them if you need a spark to tangle.

I will be present and I welcome your comments and ongoing communication.  You can reach me through the email slot on the right side of this page or at [email protected]

Looking forward to more tangling together!

"It's a String Thing" #302 - A Very Happy Sixth Birthday!

It's Tuesday, your good news day!

"It's a String Thing" challenges began on August 13, 2013, which means we have a birthday to celebrate!

6 years,
302 strings,
nearly 1,000 tangles,
9,000+ tiles, and
hundreds and 100's of "It's a String Thingers" from 36 different countries -
and we are still going strong.

Congratulations!

That calls for a celebration, doesn't it?

Let's begin with our traditional birthday string, this time with six candles ~

Image
As with past years, this is my step out for drawing the string in one continuous line.  Please pencil in the string (pictured in Step 4) in a way comfortable for you.

The tangles we will use include ~

Decoo by Ria Matheussen, CZT

Firecracker by Suzanne McNeill, CZT

Jonqal by Maria Thomas

Joy by Joyce Block, CZT

That group of tangles should give us more than enough contrast to work with, but please feel free to substitute, and/or add more if you wish.

If you would like to view the birthday celebrations from previous years, here are the links ~

IAST 1st Birthday  and 1st Birthday Tiles
IAST 2nd Birthday and 2nd Birthday Tiles
IAST 3rd Birthday and 3rd Birthday Tiles

"It's a String Thing" #301

It's Tuesday, your good news day!

After that fabulous display of tiles for our landmark 300th IAST (I am still soaking it all in!), let's take a bit of a deep breath this week and concentrate on just one tangle -  the new Gelijoy by frequent IASThinger, Nadine Roller, CZT from Germany.

Here is our string ~

Image
IAST #301 String by Adele Bruno, CZT
Given the organic nature of this tangle, the string is optional - see how it works for you.

The direct link to Gelijoy can be found here ~

Gelijoy by Nadine Roller, CZT
(and also here on TanglePatterns)

When I saw this tangle, I was immediately drawn to it.  Ivy and all that it represents, has always been one of my favorite plants.  Nadine's write up and very clever step out using arrows makes that tangle even more attractive.

Feel free to create a monotangle with Gelijoy or if the mood strikes and you want to add more tangles, please do.  The choice is yours.

Either way, as Nadine says, please relax, have patience, and enjoy the tangling process.

Simply pencil in the string line and begin.
Keep in mind that the string is a suggestion and let the tangles lead the way.

"It's a String Thing" #300 Featuring ADA

It's Tuesday, your good news day!

It is also the 300th time I have greeted you with those words.  Three hundred IAST prompts and a world wide community of tanglers later and we are still going strong.  How exciting!

I remain grateful to you and humbled by your enthusiasm, participation, interest, and sharing of this passion for all things tangled.

To mark our milestone, I have been saving my latest tangle (and the story of its inspiration) to include in the festivities and have a themed string ready as well.

Adding to the celebration, please permit me to tell you about a personal milestone and my excuse for the delayed post.
For the first time in over two years, all seven of our children were home at the same time.  If the photograph below included their spouses and children, there would be an additional ten people pictured here!  Needless to say, we had a fabulous reunion and were so grateful to be together ~

Image

Aside from their own amazing lives and accomplishments, I consider being their mom, mother-in-law to their spouses, and grandmother to their children, the greatest gifts of my life.

Speaking of grandchildren, my newest tangle is named for our sweet granddaughter, Ada.
As usual, I ran it by my Knuckleballer CZT group.  They approved (phew!) - I do hope you enjoy it!

Image

My true confession:  I was in church when the inspiration struck for this pattern.  While I should have been listening more attentively to the sermon, my attention was riveted on a decorative arch over a side altar.  Try as I may, I could not manage to deconstruct it in my mind.  I rummaged for a pencil in my purse and scribbled some ideas on the back of a donation envelope (tell me please, that I am not the only tangler to have done this!) until I finally 'got it'.

We will use Ada along with the tangles below with this celebratory string ~
Image
The other tangles include ~

100 from our 100th IAST  and

C-perfs from our 200th IAST

While I am not sure how these tangles will mesh, the chance to use all three is just too special to pass up.

The deadline for IAST #300 is extended by one week.
Please email your submissions by Saturday, August 10th.

Have fun, the string is merely a suggestion so please let the tangles lead the way - especially these.

If these tangles do not flow easily for you, feel free to use ones that do.  It is far more important to enjoy the time tangling than to worry over how to go about it.

Here are the (Not so) Official Guidelines:
* Challenges are posted on Tuesdays.

"It's a String Thing" #299

It's Tuesday, your good news day!

Below is the prompt for this week.  Look for the results of IAST #298 in the next few days!

After some deliberation on whether or not to include the 50th anniversary of the moon landing in our IAST #298 prompt, I am glad that I waited until this week.

Once I watched the news coverage and relived watching it unfold as I did as a young girl, I gained a renewed appreciation for the drive and determination that made this monumental event happen.  I am in utter awe of the accomplishments of so many that made it possible.

Our string this week pays homage to the first earth rise photograph captured by William Anders on December 24, 1968, from Apollo 8.

Image
IAST #299 String by Adele Bruno, CZT
The tangles we will use include ~

Zangler by Jody Genovese, CZT
Who doesn't love a tangle by Jody?  This brand new one not only has a sweet story behind it, it is just beautiful as it unfolds.

Croon by Margaret Bremner, CZT
Since Margaret's inspiration for this tangle was Crescent Moon, it is fitting for our prompt.

Twirlies by Nancy Newlin, CZT
These free floating shapes fit nicely with our theme.

Simply pencil in the string line and begin.
Keep in mind that the string is a suggestion and let the tangles lead the way.  There is no need to be representational with regard to the string's inspiration.

"It's a String Thing" #298

It's Tuesday, your good news day!

In yesterday's post, Sue Agnew mentioned how much fun she had with Maria Thomas' new tangle Doodah.  Sure that Sue is a good judge of tangling fun, let's get to know it this week.

Maria introduced Doodah last fall at the CZT reunion, zenAgain, that I had the pleasure of attending.

Since then, I have seen her tangle's inspiration myself on older, ornate frame work and in beautiful arches in ancient churches.

Let's play with Doodah on this string ~

Image
IAST String #298 by Adele Bruno, CZT

The two tangles we will use include:

Doodah
Clicking on the tangle name will take you to the Zentangle newsletter.  Doodah is also listed here on TanglePatterns.

Kitl by Ragged Ray
Maria's examples usually include loops when she illustrates Doodah.  Kitl will be our way of introducing loops to our tiles.
The link above will direct you to Ragged Ray's blog.  Scroll down to find the step out for Kitl and for links associated with it.

Simply pencil in the string line and begin.
Keep in mind that the string is a suggestion and let the tangles lead the way.

"It's a String Thing" #297

It's Tuesday, your good news day!

On July 17, 2014, I posted a story and pictures of a Tea that my dear friend Sindy P and I organized for a Zentangle® milestone.  (Click here for the link.)  It was the tenth anniversary of the first public class that Rick Roberts and Maria Thomas taught to introduce their new art form.
And we all know the rest of that tale!

If my math is correct, next Wednesday will mark the fifteenth anniversary of that very class.

It is incredible to think of the influence practicing the Zentangle Method has had on all of us here in the IAST community, and on tanglers the world over.

In celebration, let's begin with this string ~

Image
XV - IAST #297 String by Adele Bruno, CZT
Cheers to 15 years of Zentangle!

The tangles we will use include ~

Zenith
Click here for my Tips for Tangling Zenith, here for the listing on TanglePatterns, and here for the link to Tangle List.
Besides having a fitting name for our prompt, this is a crowd favorite.

Here is the fun part - add to Zenith two or more of your favorite tangles by Rick and Maria.  As noted above, there are several excellent online reference guides to their tangles if you need to refresh your memory with an old favorite or to pick a few new ones!

In your emails, please include the names of the tangles you use.  It will provide a quick guide to tanglers who may want to look up the step outs.

Feel free to use any shape tile you wish - square, Bijou, 3z, zendala...

Have a wonderful rest of the week.

"It's a String Thing" #296

It's Wednesday and it's still your good news day!

Welcome to my jet lagged week 😉

Let's keep things fairly simple by using just two tangles with this string ~

Image

The tangles we will use are ~

Tweak by Jaqui Bull
Perusing the more recently published tangles on TanglePatterns, this one immediately caught my eye.
Easily tangled with captivating results, it is perfect for our shortened week.

"It's a String Thing" #295

It's Tuesday, your good news day!

Sunday was Father's Day and some how it slipped by before we could give it a proper salute in our weekly tiles.

To remedy that, let's begin with this string ~

"It's a String Thing" #294

It's Tuesday, your good news day!

It's summer and there are so many happy things to celebrate, let's explore Nadine Roller's new tangle, Happy.

We begin with this string ~

Image
IAST String by Adele Bruno, CZT

Nadine's tangle is very organic, so the using a string may not even be necessary, but it is here just in case...

Nadine's step out can be found here on her blog and Linda Farmer wrote about it here on TanglePatterns.

Create a monotangle or add a tangle or two if you wish.

This will be fun!

"It's a String Thing" #293

It's Tuesday, your good news day!

This first week in June in the U.S. brings National Donut Day - marked on the first Friday of the month of June.

The origins of this delicious day date back to the Salvation Army, World War I, and the volunteers who served donuts to our troops.  (Click here to read about it in last year's IAST challenge.)

Everyone has a sweet memory associated with donuts, I am certain. A few of mine come to mind...

In our family on birthday mornings, donuts are always the breakfast treat.

Before Krispy Kreme spread throughout the South, Lou and I would drive out of our way to Daytona Beach just to be able to purchase their lighter than air sugary treats.

Then there was the time I was visiting our grandchildren in South Bend, Indiana.  I promised the kids, as I tucked them into bed one night, that we would get donuts for breakfast the next morning.  We woke up to one of the worst blizzards I can remember - totally snowed in.  We ended up making our own donuts and had the most wonderful time together gobbling up those warm sugary treats.

In celebration of the donut, and of our own delectable memories, let's celebrate by tangling with this string ~

Image
IAST #293 String by Adele Bruno, CZT

Just this week, I was reminded again of what a huge fan I am of Margaret Bremner, CZT.
Click here to view her latest post that features a page from her journal.  It is so impressive.

Let's use a few of Margaret's tangles for our challenge ~

Partay
This makes me think of sprinkles - and where would donuts be without sprinkles?!

Pixioze
This classic is just plain fun to draw.

Croon
This can be used alone or as a filler - very versatile.

If not anything else, this challenge is sure to make you hungry!

"It's a String Thing" #292

It's Tuesday, your good news day!

In the United States we are preparing for Memorial Day, May 27th.  It is a day set aside to remember and honor those who died in military service to our country.

As I wrote last year:

My grandmother used to refer to this day as "Decoration Day". I later learned that the practice of decorating the graves of those lost, dating back to the late 1800's, is where that name originated. In 1971, Memorial Day became an official observance in the United States designated to be celebrated every year on the last Monday of May.

I did a little research and found that similar holidays are celebrated around the world. Here is a short list:

Remembrance Day in England
Anzac Day in Australia and New Zealand
Dodenherdenking in The Netherlands
Armistice Day in Belgium
Volkstrauertag in Germany

While we do not all celebrate at the same time, we do share an appreciation for the brave men and women who have given their lives in service to our countries.

To mark this great day, let's begin with a star-like string ~

Image
IAST #292 String by Adele Bruno, CZT
To create this string, I used the first few step outs of Denise Rudd's Fünf (see below).  Feel free to adjust the size and position of the string as you wish.

The tangles we will use include ~

Fife by Molly Hollibaugh
Ever the fan of this tangle, I like that it begins with a dot grid and looks woven when finished.

Fünf by Denise Rudd, CZT
These very easy to draw, and very forgiving stars are just what we need for this challenge.

Furr Balls by Carolyn Coyle
This tangle can pop up most anywhere on a tile - in a string space of its own or mixed in with others.

Since we are approaching a holiday weekend, the deadline will be extended to
Friday, May 31
I will post the tiles on Monday, June 3.

Here are the (Not so) Official Guidelines:
* Challenges are posted on Tuesdays.
*Use the string posted for the week and some or all of the suggested patterns

"It's a String Thing" #291

Happy Belated Mother's Day and a belated Tuesday (your good news day!) as well.

I do hope your celebrations were full of love and appreciation, whether for you personally, for those you love - or both!

Lou and I spent a glorious extended weekend in California with our daughter Sarah and family.  (The tangles Sand, Pauline's Pigtail, and Xav are named for them.💗)

Speaking of Xav, he received his First Holy Communion on Saturday, along with his classmates.  They were so angelic and sang and prayed with all their little hearts.  It was truly a little taste of heaven to be there and share in his big day.

Just back home, here is our belated string for this week's challenge ~

Image
IAST String #291 by Adele Bruno, CZT

The tangle we will use is  Zig Zag Track by Tomàs Padrós and a generous helping of perfs.

Tomàs' new triangular tangle brings to mind CZT Jane Eileen Malone's 4 MOM, one we've used in the past.

Since I was concerned that Mother's Day came and went with no mention here on my blog,
using Zig Zag Track along with perfs (a.k.a. orbs or Tipple) will honor our M O M's.

I'll post the results of IAST #290 by Thursday afternoon.  Wait until you see these!

Thank you for your patience!

It's Tuesday, your good news day!

After last week's loopy Mel Mel string, let's try something angular ~

Sikito by Simone Menzel, CZT
Simone's new tangle is as beautiful as her photos and description of her vacation in southern France.

Edie by Laurel Davis, CZT
Laurel used her pretty tangle in last week's IAST #298 and I'm certain that she will appreciate seeing what we create with it.

"It's a String Thing" #289

It's Tuesday, your good news day!

I trust everyone had a joyous Easter time and thank you all for your beautiful tiles for IAST #288.
The notes and tiles will be posted tomorrow as our family celebrations carried over into this week 😊

Today is the very last day of the month of April.  Most of you will be reading this on the very first day of May.  Since May Day is a festive date, and "April showers bring May flowers" let us begin with a string inspired by my flowery tangle, Mel Mel ~

The tangles we will use include ~

ONE OR TWO OF YOUR FAVORITE tangles along with...

Rain by Maria Thomas
This tangle is very fun to draw, can be worked into any space, used along a single line or stacked, and  can be finished as light or as bold as you prefer.
Besides, where would flowers be without the rain?!

Happy May Day everyone!  I look forward to your emails.

"It's a String Thing" #288

It's Tuesday, your good news day!

We will use a full two weeks to complete this challenge to give us plenty of time for family celebrations.  The deadline for emailing your tiles will be adjusted to April 27th with the results posted on Monday, April 29th.

After last week's egg-cellent challenge, we still have wonderful things to celebrate as the hopefulness of Easter surrounds us.

Let's begin with this string ~

The tangles we will use include:

Tulipa by Simone Manzel, CZT
This is a brand new tangle by our long time friend, Simone.  It is a simply elegant tangle and invites color if you are in the mood.

Javic by Ria Matheussen, CZT
This tangle slipped by me or I would have included it sooner.  Any tangle of Ria's is a tangle of mine 😊

Mooka by Maria Thomas

I realize that these tangles are all organic in nature.  Please feel free to include any other tangle that suits your mood/needs as you tangle.  If you are more comfortable with grid patterns, by all means add one.

"It's a String Thing" #287

It's Tuesday, your good news day!

Easter is just around the corner, so let's create our own egg hunt and begin with this string ~

The tangles we will use include:

Hemp by Sandy Bartholomew, CZT
This tangle is fun to draw and beautiful to behold.  I will publish my Tips for Tangling Hemp on Thursday.  Be sure to check back!

Queen B by Helen Williams
This tangle also begins on a diagonal grid yet it is just different enough to work well with Hemp.

Henna Drum by Jane MacKugler, CZT
Curls, little Crescent Moons, and flowers - what fun!

"It's a String Thing" #286

It's Tuesday, your good news day!

This is a great time of year for sports fans and at the top of the charts in this week's news is the Final Four NCAA (National Collegiate Athletic Association) basketball tournament - the culmination of what is known as March Madness.  The men's games have been exceptionally exciting as 68 teams have been whittled down to the Final Four.  The championship game will be played on Monday.

Let's tangle a little March (even though we are into April already!) Madness ourselves and begin with this string ~

The exciting tangles we will use include ~

Tunnelvizion by CZT Jody Genovese
This is Jody's latest tangle on TanglePatterns.  It looks like so much fun to draw that it just had to be included this week.  The little "escapees" open up worlds of possibilities.

Mr. E by CZT Shawn Hayden
While Jody's tangle does have some similarity to Mr. E, their differences will be fun to explore.

Scape by CZT Angie Gittles
At first, I thought to include Printemps, but then spotted this pattern.  Angie includes spirals, straight lines, and orbs here - just the ticket to compliment and/or morph into the other two tangles.

This will be a great week of sports and tangles.  Have fun with your tiles!

Speaking of tiles, the results of IAST #285 will be published tomorrow.
Just a little delay as we were away visiting our sweet granddaughter, Ada - how can one ever have enough Gramma time?!

"It's a String Thing" #285

It's Tuesday, your good news day!

This week is a new and exciting adventure into Maria Thomas' exciting world of DingsplatZ.
The latest blog post from Zentangle features a Kitchen Table Tangles video by Maria and Rick Roberts with a full explanation and multiple examples.  Click here to view it.

DingsplatZ begin with loopy strings that easily fill with aura and tangles.  Here is an example of what one might look like ~

Image
IAST String #285 by Adele Bruno, CZT

Begin your own DingsplatZ with a loopy string - each of our beginning loopy strings will be different.  Fill it with aura, orbs, and any tangle (or tangles) that strike your fancy.

Please don't over think this either.  I firmly believe that copying other tanglers - especially the master tangler herself (Maria) -  is the best way to learn, so feel free to use the same enhancements featured in the video.

This will be great fun and the array of tiles (and maybe even a pair of jeans, or two!) will be fabulous.

Speaking of tiles, the results of IAST #284 will be published tomorrow!
