PM was a daily liberal-progressive tabloid newspaper published in New York City in the 1940s. They took the perhaps quixotic stance of refusing to run paid advertising, and thus never showed a profit, and eventually went out of business.
PM also had a daily gag panel from a rotating cast of cartoonists. These panels were then bundled into a syndicated package sold to other newspapers under the name ‘Crack-Ups’
Included among these cartoonists were such important figures as Chon Day, Irving Roir, and Misha Richter. Standing head-and-shoulders above the others was early and brilliant work by the magnificent Virgil Partch (VIP). Unlike his later, somewhat tame, panel Big George, VIP’s contributions to Crack-Ups are most extraordinary, and well worth reviving for the modern reader.
