About Compas
Compas (also known as kompa, konpa or konpa dirèk) is a popular dance music genre from Haiti. Created in the mid-1950s, it is a modern interpretation of Haiti’s Méringue, with strong influences of Latin and Jazz music. It is characterized by a mid-tempo rhythm, prominent basslines, multiples percussions, and melodic arrangements often featuring guitars, keyboards, and horns.
Compas had a strong influence on the Haitian and Caribbean music scene and it helped spawn different and new musical derivates and genres, such as zouk and cadence-lypso.
