About Neoperreo
Neoperreo is a subgenre of reggaeton that usually combines dembow and 2000s-era reggaeton-inspired sounds with other musical genres like deconstructed club or witch house. It was developed in the early 2010s in Latin America. This subgenre has been marked by a strong presence of women and queer artists, as well as lyrics that frequently seek to subvert or reappropriate gender stereotypes, particularly those related to sexuality.
Midway during the digital era, Neoperreo first appears as a hashtag. Its primary trait was decentralizing and deconstructing the puerto rican roots of the reggaeton genre. As a result of immediate digital globalization, the regional origin of the genre, wanders between Chile and Argentina due to the pioneering and influence led by its founder Tomasa del Real in 2014, and Ms. Nina in 2015.
Neoperreo in words of Tomasa del Real, the movement’s regarded founder:
When I try to explain the type of music I make, I say:
I don’t know if this is reggaeton, but this is perreo and it is not regular perreo, is Neoperreo […] Is the new wave of people making new music for the clubs.
Despite Neoperreo began as an underground scene, in recent years its popularity has skyrocketed, inspiring works with tremendous commercial and critical influence like Rosalia’s “MOTOMAMI” or Arca’s “KiCk i” and “KICK ii”.
