This is what we read about on a daily basis in our support groups - children and young people experience systemic barriers to school attendance, then their parents experience systemic barriers to finding and arranging a resolution for them. @educationgovuk @ChildrensComm

“They deal with complex networks of services..many of whom can’t ever quite offer the support that they need. They repeat their story again and again, filling in check lists which don’t quite cover the situation and don’t quite seem relevant.” @naomicfisher @BexGoneWest

Seeing many posts expressing Sunday night despair at facing a return to school in the morning. Dread of another term of anxiety. Dread of impossible battles with schools & LAs. Children in tears. Parents saying they don't know how they can carry on. It shouldn't be like this.

This article fails to acknowledge the overwhelming reason for persistent absence reported by parents, which is unmet & unrecognised SEND, especially autism, PDA & ADHD, where problems are triggered by the school environment & compounded by a lack of knowledge & understanding

LOOK! A pupil suffers overwhelming anxiety and rather than refusing because it will 'condone her absence' (the common school reaction), her school sent work home and she still achieves - I congratulate her school for their supportive approach @nfis_tweets 'dailyecho.co.uk/news/17856042.…

This is what we see day after day in the Not Fine in School Facebook groups. This is what I saw with the 40 families who took part in my doctoral research. This is a huge problem for lots and lots of families.

When I tell people that I work with children and families who have problems at school, they often nod and look sympathetic. 'Bullying is terrible', they say. Yes. It is, but it's not bullying I hear about most. Here's what families tell me. (with @_MissingTheMark) 1/

It is sad that so many children have to reach crisis before their difficulties attending school are believed. They might not need to reach crisis point if the automatic response to reported concerns was not "they are fine in school"

School staff are NOT medically trained/qualified, yet they have responsibility for deciding A. Whether a child's reported illness is genuine & B. Whether that absence due to illness should be authorised or not. How is this fair when the outcome could = fines/prison for parents?

The govt's solution to children for whom school is a traumatic experience is to force them to go. With their parents and carers under threat of child protection, fines and prison And children who are sick. Now schools will be asked to decide if sick enough. How would they know??

So true, children who are anxiety-based 'school refusers' WANT to go to school but are held back by severe anxiety. They are wrongly viewed as lazy, defiant or as truants and support and help is therefore withheld @nfis_tweets

Anxious children are often great kids who don’t want to do the wrong thing, but they are being driven by a brain in high alert; they are not misbehaving. #trauma #sendcrisis #attachmentdisorder #EducationForAll

Teachers do not need to be trained - parents already spot the signs but when we try to alert professionals and ask for help no one will listen to us because we are 'just' parents!
